It figures that all the cool stuff comes out after I'm not around to enjoy it. The year after I left middle school, they started serving breakfast there. The year after I left high school, they added about 20 internet terminals in the Student Center.

And the year after I left Indianapolis, the oldies station (which was OK, but kinda generic) gets replaced by one of the sweetest damn radio stations I've ever heard. Fortunately, it's simulcast on the internet via streaming audio all day, every day.

It's called 104.5 Jack FM, and they play what they want, when they want. Beatles followed by Styx followed by Seal followed by Third Eye Blind? Why not?

104.5 Jack FM

Well, it's the same logo as the Jack stations that have been in Toronto and Calgary for the past couple of years. Is this one in Indianapolis owned by Rogers as well?

We have a JackFM here in L.A. too. I looked up their site on Yahoo! and found a bunch of others around the country, all with the same "Playing what we want" slogan.

SIDE NOTE #1: 93.1 FM in Los Angeles has gone under at least 5 format changes since 1990, trying everything from classic rock to doo-wop oldies. I'm pretty sure they've been owned by CBS the whole time, which would lead me to believe that CBS is starting a chain/network of stations with a "flexible" format.

SIDE NOTE #2: Most stations (all of the ones I can think of, anyway) that brag on playing a big variety of music dont do well (The exception being those Top-40 teeny-bopper stations). I think most people like their radio stations split into catagories: Hip-Hop station, Oldies station, Rock station, Jazz station, Sports-talk station, etc., as opposed to one station that is all over the map.

"Playing What We Want" and their no-request policy equals "our station is run by a big, faceless computer somewhere."

That's alot like Los Angeles' "Indie 103.1FM" which is actually a Clear Channel Station. Though to be fair, they actually do play good music. Henry Rollins has a show on it. There are several college and public stations in the area so there is actual competition for non-mainstream listeners in the area.

San Diego has "FM 94.9" which is owned by McGraw-Hill. They are a semi free form/Alternative rock station that mixes it up pretty well. Although they do play alot of stuff I in particular am not that into. Again, having a long established alternative music community in a large enough area seems to get some stations to actually try to be better than the standard congolmocorp type stations.

Frosty does have a real valid point though. Outside of the esoteric minority, the general public is so dumbed down that radio has various specific formats so as to appeal to the lowest common denominator in the demographic. In smaller areas/ those without enough non- mainstream music fans, the format probably doesn't work as well. Even a station playing too wide a variety of mainstream music is eventually going to be playing too much of something that enough people DON'T like that they end up kind of shooting themselves in the foot. It's something that seems like a good idea in theory, but in practice doesn't work out.

Slight correction: Indie is owned by Entravision, a Spanish language media group. Clear Channel only sells their ad space. (Though I seem to remember reading something about that relationship ending.)

Read here for more info about the "Jack FM" stations

There is a new one in San Diego recently, as well.

Here in St. Louis, during the Final Four weekend Infinity's KYKY-FM 98.1 (Hot A/C) called itself "Bob FM" for a few days doing a similar format, but reverted come Monday. Just a couple days ago Bonneville blew up Smooth Jazz 106.5 and went to a Jack format called "Arch 106.5." You know, cause we have a really big arch. Yeah.

It all reminds me of the channels I already have on my XM Satellite Radio, which makes me happy I have my XM Satellite Radio. Yeah.

Unfortunately, that's what pretty much every radio station does now with the programs such as Powergold (in which the Music Director puts all songs into categories that determine the frequency of spins) and Audiovault (which puts it all on the air). The DJ's primary role now-a-days is to just be a voice that pops up once in awhile, to the point where the preferred term to use in the industry now is "on-air talent."

Jack FM sounds like a pretty cool concept though, regardless of how it's done. Formats have become so airtight in the past few years that it makes listening to the radio downright frustrating for me.

Jim Ladd, who is the only free-form commercial DJ left in Los Angeles, wrote a pretty amazing book on the corporatization of commercial radio called "Radio Waves: Life and Revolution on the FM Dial" (ISBN 0-312-07786-6). If you are interested in how commercial radio became what it is today, I highly recommend reading it.

Followed by JOE FM in Edmonton...which has the same bland, nasal sounding guy whos says "Joe FM...playing ANYTHING". It's now an epidemic...Standard Radio (I think) has closed down SPIRIT FM (Niagara regions' Country station) to start up GIANT FM.

There used to be a time where every city in the country had a different flavour or sound on their radio dials. Now it's all the same. For shame.

Is it great that something so "new and different" is so homogenized?

I complained to another Liberal friend about some of the Left’s tone concerning the 2004 elections. I thought it insulting to hear those “red state” voters caricatured as red-necked rubes. My friend asked, “Well, don’t you think that people who live in large urban areas, who travel and read and speak other languages are better able to make informed choices?” It turns out it is superiority, not familiarity, which breeds contempt. - Pat Sajak

I don't listen to it.

Yup. Last month I was driving to Phoenix and tuned into a Flagstaff, Az station for a bit. The "on-air talent" teased a new song from Audioslave in the next 30 minuntes. Before I could hear the song, I drove of range and figured I had missed it. I hit my "auto seek" button and picked up a different station from Phoenix...and yup, after about 10 minutes, they also played the new Audioslave song.

Adding my two bits to the "oh yeah, we have a JACK station, too" poll wouldn't help much. But when it did premiere here, back in June, they were completely commercial-less for the first 3 weeks. Cool novelty for those 3 weeks, but after that it sank into the "middle of the road station that can be played at a hair salon" genre.

Isn't it just great that one of Americas largest cities doesn't have a modern rock station? I am still holding out hope that WMMR changes formats once Preston and Steve begin.

Man, I feel bad for Philly. A long time ago when I lived there, MMR and YSP were the shit, and you could listen to either one all day long and never tire of the selection.

WPST over in Jersey was decent in a modern rock/indy kind of way, but I doubt they even exist anymore. (edit yep, and now they are crap! http://www.wpst.com)

Oh Crap, for giggles I went over to the YSP website, and is that Tommy Conwell from Tommy Conwell and the Young Rumblers? Holy crap it is! He was the shiznit before there even was shiznit, at least back in the day in philly. Now a lowly DJ. Wow!

Oh, and PeterStork, I had no idea smooth Jazz was gone! I listen to 93X too much I suppose!

How long ago did you live in Philly? WPST has been a Top 40 station for a while now (they did move from 97.5 to 94.5; 94.5 is now a classic rock station out of the Lehigh Valley [I think]).

Are we thinking of the same PST? I always remeber it's format gojng something like Backstreet Boys>Mariah Carey>Eminem. Not really indy stuff there.

Anyway, PST has switched formats with its sister station The Hawk and it is much better, IMO.
