Ungentlemanly Comment Below: Highlight text at your own risk
You've obviously never seen a "Two Girls One Cup" match.

Of course not having Kaka available for the third group game isn't going to help Brazil deliver a big win over Portugal almost certainly needed for Ivory Coast to have a shot of advancing. Way to goon it up, guys.

And now that we've all had our laugh at France, can we have a round of guffaws at the Italian diving team now?

Some would contend this is karma biting Brazil in the ass for Rivaldo's antics (youtube.com) in 2002. Of course, if karma wishes to be even-handed about these things the Ivorian in question should now get a two-match ban.

I love the double standards over here about Fabiano's double handball. When Maradona did it it sparked a quarter centruy of outrage. When Thierry Henry did it he was castigated - the way in which his career will be remembered forever altered - and demands were made for a replay. Luis Fabiano? Ah fuck it, it was still a great goal. Just one of those things.

Cheating's bad (unless it's against foreign folks).

Personally I thought it was pretty outrageous and couldn't believe it wasn't caught live. It seemed like even the opposing players didn't see it. I continue to wonder how something like that doesn't get more attention.

Did you guys happen to catch Portugal eating North Korea? 7-0. That sounds more like a baseball score. And scary thing is it could've easily been 9-0.

Generally people don't give a crap unless it happens against their team, or in a really big game. In a random group match against Ivory Coast you've pretty much got carte blanche.

For the record, I agree with you. Luis Fabiano himself respectfully disagrees......

Quoth Luis: "Well that is true, it seems as though the ball hit my hand," he said. "It seems the ball hit my hand and the second time it hit my shoulder.

"But in order to make the goal more beautiful, there had to be a doubtful element. It was a spectacular goal and I believe it was not a voluntary handball.

"It was a legitimate goal and it was one of the most beautiful goals that I've scored in my career.

"It was magnificent and where better to score such a goal than at the World Cup?"

(Source: BBC. Cut and pasted because it's from a long article that mostly talks about Kaka's sending off.)

My best friend and his family is Portuguese and went over to his folks place to watch with his folks, brother, and him and even though it was a blow out, it was so much funner to watch a game with people who live and die with ever shot. Even when it was 6-0, they were still cheering their heads off when that late 7th goal came.

Cliffs Notes preview for tomorrow:

GROUP A
Uruguay and Mexico are both through if they draw, however, Mexico have (almost certainly) avoiding Argentina in the round of 16 to play for, so hopefully that won't be a boring stalemate.

As has been noted, if either URU or MEX win tomorrow, France and South Africa are both mathematically alive, but each would probably need a major blowout of the other to win and advance on goal difference, because it is hard to see URU/MEX being decided by more than a goal or two.

GROUP B
Group B is more complicated. Argentina have nearly nothing to play for - they clinch the group even if they lose by four goals tomorrow. South Korea owns nearly all of the tiebreakers over Greece, so GRE REALLY needs a win if KOR/Nigeria draw or GRE needs a KOR loss if ARG/GRE draw. If KOR and GRE both win or draw tomorrow, GRE needs to score two more goals than KOR or KOR advances.

Improbably, if ARG beats GRE, Nigeria CAN advance if they simply beat South Korea. That is the only scenario where NGA can advance.

As JayJayDean has already covered groups A and B, and we have already discussed group C in detail, this will be a preview for the remaining groups.

Now I wish I was as graphically talented as CRZ is, but that is not the case, and so I'll have to stick to words.

Group D
GHA 4 +1 GER 3 +3 SER 3 0 AUS 1 -4
Remaining Fixtures: GHA v GER, AUS v SER

--Ghana are through if they don't lose to Germany. Only way they go out is if they lose and Serbia beat Australia.
--Germany are through if they win. If they draw and the other game ends in a draw as well, then Germany will qualify as well. In that case, if Serbia win, Germany are done. If Germany draw but Australia win, Germany hold all the tiebreakers over Australia by big margins.
--Serbia are through if they win and out if they lose, regardless of the other result. If they draw, however, they need a result in GHA v GER, because a draw there kills Serbia. In that case, if Ghana win, Serbia are through. If Germany win, Ghana hold both tiebreakers over Serbia.
--Australia can only go through if they win. If Ghana wins, they will qualify automatically. If Germany don't lose their game, life becomes difficult for the Aussies, because Germany and Serbia both own the tiebreakers over Australia.

Group E
NED 6 +3 JAP 3 0 DEN 3 -1 CAM 0 -2
Remaining Fixtures: CAM v NED, JAP v DEN

--Netherlands are already through. There is a good chance they win the group too, because if JAP v NED ends in a result either way, the Dutch hold tiebreakers over both of them.
--Cameroon are done.
--Japan are through if they don't lose to Denmark. If they win and can cover the goal difference with Holland, they can win the group.
--Denmark need a win to qualify. Denmark can win the group if they win and Holland lose, and the goal difference of 4 is covered in their results.

Group F
PAR 4 +2 ITA 2 0 NZL 2 0 SVK 1 -2
Remaining Fixtures: SVK v ITA, NZL v PAR

--Paraguay will win the group as long as they don't lose to New Zealand. Even if they lose, they can go through if Italy don't beat Slovakia, because they hold the tiebreaker on Slovakia by 4 goals.
--Italy can confirm their qualification by a win over Slovakia. If they fail to win, then the other result comes into picture. If Italy lose, they are gone. If they draw and New Zealand win, they are gone. If New Zealand draw as well, the team that scores more will advance. If New Zealand lose, Italy are through.
--New Zealand are in the same position as Italy. If they win, they win the group. They are gone if they draw and the other game ends in a result. If the other game is a draw, then New Zealand and Italy will contest tiebreakers.
--Slovakia must win to stay alive. In that case, If Paraguay don't lose, Slovakia are through. If New Zealand win, Slovakia will contest tiebreakers with Paraguay, which Paraguay hold.

Group G
BRA 6 +3 POR 4 +7 CIV 1 -2 NKR 0 -8
Remaining Fixtures: BRA v POR, CIV v NKR

--Brazil are through and will win the group so long as they don't lose to Portugal.
--Portugal are basically through and own every tiebreaker over the other teams in their group. In the unlikely scenario that CIV win and score 7 more goals than Portugal in the last match, and the combined margin of victory for Brazil and CIV is more than 9, then Portugal will go out on tiebreakers. Since that is not going to happen, Portugal are basically through.
--CIV are basically dead. If they win and Portugal lose, and the combined margin of victory is at least 10, they can go through.
--North Korea are done.

Group H
CHI 6 +2 ESP 3 +1 SUI 3 0 HON 0 -3
Remaining Fixtures: CHI v ESP, SUI v HON

--Chile will advance and win the group as long as they don't lose to Spain. If they lose, but Honduras don't lose to Switzerland, they are through. However, if they lose and Swiss win, Chile will go to tiebreakers against the Swiss. If the goal difference of 2 is covered, Chile are gone.
--Spain will advance and win the group if they beat Chile. If Spain draw and Switzerland don't win, Spain are through. If Spain lose and Honduras win, it will be tiebreakers between Honduras, Spain, and Switzerland and all kinds of hell can break lose.
--Switzerland will go through if they win and Chile don't lose their game OR if they draw and Chile win. If Switzerland win but Chile lose, they will go to tiebreakers with each other. If Switzerland draw but Spain do not lose, they are gone. Switzerland could lose and still go through via a three-way tie like mentioned above.
--Honduras can only go through if they win and Spain lose. In that case, we get the three-way tie for second place.

Whew. I'm sure CRZ could make more nifty tables, but the idea here is to save the trouble.

Yeah, it's a bad joke. But frankly, so are the entire French team. Karma's a bitch and so is Henry and his handballs. I don't care who wins from here on out, I'm already much happier with this world cup than I've been with any other recent one, especially '98.

Actually, if Serbia beats Australia, Serbia is on 6 points. Ghana would then need to beat Germany in a game that Germany knows it needs a win to avoid disaster.

If Germany and the US come through today, all six African teams will be knocked out in the group stage in the first African-hosted World Cup.

Also, South Africa became the first World Cup host team to fail to advance to the knockout stage.

In hell, the only sports channel has Greece playing soccer on a continuous loop. Thankfully here we have Argentina to save us from such pain. Good. Fucking. Riddance.

Regardless of the result in the other game, Ghana only need a draw to go through, for a draw puts them on five points, Germany on four.

If Serbia beat Australia, then we have GHA 4 GER 3 SER 6 AUS 1. If Ghana draw, they have 5 and Germany 4, so Ghana will advance. I think your scenario is for Ghana to top the group.

Of course, I messed up too. I said Ghana go out if they lose and Australia beat Serbia, and that's wrong. In that scenario, Ghana and Australia go to tiebreakers, which Ghana own. If however, Serbia beat Australia and Ghana lose, they are gone for sure, no tiebreakers. That's edited now.

I knew that. Just meant to say that it seems close to impossible imagining Germany not winning when it knows it has to win this game.

Meanwhile, Algeria must feel they have the hopes of a continent on their shoulders, but we're just about to see what THE TRUTH is in Group C.

edit: Well, THE TRUTH sure took it's own damn sweet time getting here!

England looked a little better in today's game. It will be interesting to see who draws Germany next round (assuming they do get through!)

You know what, I am totally enthusiastic on the US Team winnig the group and advancing. They play a great offensive style, and really deserved the win. In Germany there's a saying like "the luck of the hard workers", and working hard they did. Great team, great games, and a good chance to advance to the quarters, as they play Ghana next.

Meanwhile Germany barely made it, beating Ghana very close 1:0. But now we have.....wait for it.....GERMANY VS. ENGLAND coming up. The match-up to beat all match-ups. Sunday afternoon, you won't find a car on german streets:-)
