ESPN.com - MLB - Cubs' Wood opts against surgery to repair shoulder
But that's not what catches me eye. What intrigues me is THIS:
CHICAGO -- Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood has decided against having surgery to repair his injured right shoulder.
Wood made just four starts this season following shoulder surgery on Aug. 31 and will miss the rest of the year with a partially torn rotator cuff. He hopes to come back next season as a reliever.
Wood a reliever? He didn't do too bad his first go-around, but just because you pitch less innings doesn't make you any less injury-prone (see Gagne, Eric). Would Kerry Wood work as a permanent closer?

Brenley asked him why he would relieve - and wood said "to build up my arm" - so he has no intention of commiting to relief, just to use it if needed. He said he got advice from Pedro Martinez. OK, then.
The guy we trade away almost tosses a no-no. Wood 0 just a no.

A closer for the Cubs is just like being a starter. You only work once every five games.

Keep him exclusively in middle inning relief and if he stays healthy he could potentially be dominant, the way Hawkins was as an 8th inning guy in Minnesota. But he does not have the mental makeup to be a closer. The first time someone rips a game-winning homer off him he would implode.
