I recently had to restore my computer from death using the pre-installed disk partition that came with my computer. Now this reset all my system software, so I didn't have the 75 or so "deathly important" security patches for XP, so I dutifully went to to download them.

The "please wait while we invade your privacy to see what you've got on your hard drive" page comes up, but the little security warning doesn't and so I'm never able to run the little ActiveX installer for updates.

I emailed Microsoft tech support about, and their automated reply said to wait a business day for my answer. imagine my surprise when I get an email from them this morning saying that since they hadn't heard back from me they'd be closing my case!

Anyone have any ideas?

I would say check your security settings in IE, and make sure you don't have a pop up blocker turned on.

Have you got it set to automatically check for updates? Tools-options-advanced-Software updates If it's a Firefox bug, updates should fix it. If not, try looking for common themes when it does crash - is it whenever you search?
