Since we got our computer out of storage I've been trying to get Windows Update to work properly.

I still get the notification that there are critical updates, but when I try to get them I receive the message:

"Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page. The Windows Update servers are temporarily unavailable. Please try again later."

I've been getting this message for about a month now. I tried using Google but none of the solutions I found solved my problem.

Just curious if anyone has had a similar problem or knows of a solution. I'm using Windows 98.

Nothing creative.

I'm not 100% certain, but it does appear that Windows 98 is at end of life. You can see here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;[ln];LifeWin

It appears that Critical updates should still be available until June, 2006 though. I'm not sure if this is the issue or not.

Willful ignorance of science is not commendable. Refusing to learn the difference between a credible source and a shill is criminally stupid.

It sounds like your trying to use the automatic update feature? I don't think that ever worked well for me on 98.
Have you tried it manually? (Tools->Windows Update in IE)
Or try:

At the very worst you can probably ask MS for a service pack CD if all else fails.

Windows update does not scan at all. It gets to that part to scan for updates and that is when I receive the error message.

I should probably just upgrade my OS anyways. Thanks for the responses.

Connecticut being the etat sans Frontières that it is (well, eight of our 11 Borders stores are getting liquidated), Kobo e-readers are finally cheap enough that I'm considering one.
