Since 1996, Calgary hockey fans have been waiting for the return of their beloved Flames to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The return has not of yet come to pass. So, with the recent resurgance (knock on wood) of the Flames, currently second in the Northwest Division and fifth in the Western Conference, will these Flames finally return to the playoffs, or should they book their tee-times now?

Personally, I believe that if they are still in the thick of the playoff race at the All-Star Break, they're in.

I'm not convinced that the Flames can keep up this good play. I could easily see them slipping into a major slump. But I would LIKE for them to make the playoffs. The more Canadian teams in the Playoffs, the better the atmosphere especially when they face each other. Being a Canucks fan, one of the best Playoff series was the Canucks/Flames in '94.

I think the Flames success rests on whether or not they can continue to get high quality goaltending for the rest of the way. What happens when Turek comes back? Should he get his job back? Do they stick with Kiprusoff? I remember Kiprusoff having some good streaks with San Jose but then sucking really hard too.

watching Calgary succeed warms my heart. It shows you dont need to spend a lot of $$$ to succeed as a GM can build a strong and smart team rather than a team filled with superstars.

The Flames are probably going to have to trade Iginla, as they won't be able to afford him once the season's up. It's the sad reality of a small market team. Sutter seems smart enough that he should get something good for Jarome.

I'm also excited by the Flames' resurgence, being new in this city. They could finish 5th or 6th in the West. A first-round matchup with Los Angeles would be ideal, I think.

But first things first, there's still more than half the season to go.

The Flames have been paying really well of late, so much so that they've become my second favorite team to watch, supplanting their northern neighbours Edmonton. I had real questions regarding the Kipprusoff trade but he has more than rewarded Sutter's faith in him. I think Turek had better get used to watching games from the bench upon his return.

With respect to Iggy, I don't know that its necessarily true that the Flames will have to move him. If the team can make the payoffs and make some solid profits, and if the new CBA works something out for small market teams, they could well hold on to him. A lot of big ifs, I know. I'd really hate for the Flames to become like the Oilers, forced to move every good player they develop for prospects.

Anyway, my early prediction is that the Flames grab the last playoff spot in the West, sending Freeway 420 into rapturous joy...

Some speculation regarding Turek's return: Darryl Sutter said in the Calgary Herald this week that when the three injured centermen (Steve Reinprecht, Craig Conroy & Blair Betts) return from injury, he's going to run with 22 guys on the roster. The NHL allows you to carry 23. Will they use three goalies to avoid losing McLennan or Kiprusoff to waivers??

You can't run three goalies, it always leads to trouble. Being a former goaltender, confidence is 95% of your game and if you're sharing two practice nets and two dressing room stalls between three guys, your confidence will go down fast, especially if you're that guy sitting up in the press box.

It's a shame but McLennan's probably going to have to go again. The guy just can't catch a break. It's probably only fair to him to let him get claimed off waivers because he deserves to keep playing in the NHL this season.

Or just deal one of the goalies in exchange for...well, whatever the Flames need. Money, I guess. :)

Rob asks Dave and Ric if they want to go backstage to play Hungry Hungry Hippos and Flair and Batista immediately bail. Flair wants to be Green. Man, EVERYBODY wants to be green. Except the girl in the commercials. She wanted to be pink. That either means that the ad agency was sexist or that she was communist. Of course Hungry Hungry Hippos is a rather capitalist game isnít it? No self respecting communist would play Hungry Hungry Hippos. Except Stalin. He LOVED Hungry Hungry Hippos. Before Turek got injured, he was 0-2. He basically sucked it up in net. Kiprusoff has been splendid, as has McLennan. They both deserve Turek's spot more than he does, and both COMBINED make less than Roman does. Turek won't get claimed off waivers because he's too expensive, so we're stuck with him.

I'm surprised Granato stayed on as an assistent... Quenneville is a big media darling in these parts, but I haven't seen too much of him to warrent such praise.
