After his controversial release at the end of 03', do you think that Goldust will ever grace a WWE ring regularly again? I am hoping that he will, he was such a unique character.

It wasn't a controversial release, but it was a questionable release. For a company that has stockpiled deadwood that will never get over with the fans, why release someone who in that character has 'it'. The most over Lance Storm and Booker T have been the past few years has been when they were associated with Goldust. Now, should he be main eventing? No. But, if the Sparky Plugg's, Billy Gunn's, Ron Simmon's etc. are going to be kept around while being treated with general apathy, why not keep Dustin around as a mid-carder who has shown the ability to give some sort of rub to the person he's around.

He's in NWA:TNA every Wednesday Night as Dustin Rhodes and it's scary how all his charisma is gone without Goldust.

Dustin has had other "issues" over his career (Plane Ride From Hell) and a lot of injuries so maybe WWE just didn't think he could hold up to the schedule or was worth the money anymore.

Well, i meant that it was controversial on the likes of this board. Not within the WWE.

I do think that the WWE seem to periodically think they can use Goldust, and then dispose of him when they are done. Dustin has gone on record to say that he personally had no idea why they did it, so if the WWE released him for the difficulties he caused, they didn't tell him.

Maybe he will reappear in two or three years. It is annoying that the WWE retain the rites to all their characters, as Dustin could have used it elsewhere. Its not as if WWE has any particular competition now.

Might just be me, but while the Goldust character was sometimes good, I like what he did in WCW before the end of it, where he was supposed to be fed up with gimmicks and characters, and just wanted to make everyone pay.

It was a kind of self-loathing that I found more palatable than Raven often times.

I don't think he showed much charisma in those roles, though. With Goldust, ya gotta admit, he really got behind that gimmick. As plain ol' Dustin Rhodes.....somethings missing.

I thought he was alright when he first came back to WCW as Seven, and then trashed the gimmick and Goldust, I thought it gave him an edge and a new direction, and I thought he pulled it off pretty well. I mean not every gimmick can be as over the top as Goldust.

I don't ever remember him speaking as Seven, let alone wrestling, so I think saying "he pulled it off pretty well" is a bit much. All he did was look in that kid's window....

Really, if you look at it objectively, Dustin's an older veteran with a lot of injuries, and he wound up on the shelf a lot over this last year. I can't imagine that Rico, who has essentially the same gimmick and is a lot healthier, if not younger, doesn't work a lot cheaper. So while many, such as myself, find Goldust to be a great character, I can't really fault the company for trying to cut some losses.

I'm surprised to find so many positive things to say about the Goldust character. Since the very first day he debuted, I've always though it was one of the worst gimmicks I'd ever seen. True, Rhodes used the character very well and managed to somehow get over with the crowds, but I never saw that much promise in the gimmick for more than a short run.

It's weird how he was able to really get over with such a crappy and "ambiguously gay" gimmick, while never with any other gimmick. Why can Rhodes play gay but not play a badass?

Because the Goldust gimmick was never about being gay, it was about being flamboyant, flashy, and charismatic. He was about pushing the envelope of good taste and macho masculinity, but maintaining enough of a bad ass undercurrent as to create androgeny. Goldust WAS a lot like Prince; I thought it was funny that his archetype was "eccentric movie star" rather than "eccentric rock star."

As to the topic at hand, I think as long as Dustin lives, there will be a place in the WWE for Goldust. Ten years from now, the golden rain and wide screen will still pop a crowd, and Dustin's innate charisma will mesh well with a "Crazy Old Man" vibe.

And my personal take on why he hasn't succeeded with other gimmicks: There aren't any other gimmicks. "Badass Serious" Dustin Rhodes is too bland; he doesn't exude intensity enough to seem like anything but the Big Tough Cowboy that doesn't draw anywhere anymore. "Born Again" Dustin Runnels had promise, but he was completely and utterly jobberized, to the point that he couldn't be taken seriously, and Dustin "My Daddy is a Legend" Rhodes wasn't pushed NEARLY as hard as a heel persona, although Rhodes lacks the Randy Orton-like ability to rub guys the wrong way, generating REAL hatred and resentment. Still, I wish him the best, and I hope he and Russo put their heads together and find something for him, something that acknowledges the Goldust gimmick, but represents an evolution rather than a ripoff.

I may not have always liked the Goldust character (he had some great backstage moments, and when the opponents were creeped out by him was good too) can admit it got pops. I just liked the idea of someone loudly expressing their disdain for a character that they were best known for.

But, I do hope that Dustin shows up again, and odds are he will. I didn't think they'd bring him back in that character after last time. But what ho! They did. So they may do it again.

WWE owns Goldust, and Dustin would IMHO be wise not to return to a company that cannot appretiate him. He needs something, certainly. A visual makeover for a start, not to mention a purpose.

Something flashy, weird enough that the others don't question any weird thing he does. And remind us that in terms of the title hunt, he is still in love with gold.

Or just self-loathing - if all else fails, go insane. If TNA could do something with him, to attract the Goldust fans, that could be quite good for them.

Even cooler if they could do something cool with Kanyon, showing that they *can* think up ideas for a good worker with an unusual style and plenty of nerve.

I fear for any things they might try to do with Dustin, because, call me a pessimist, but i just don't think it will work. Dustin frankly did Goldust so well that people will struggle to accept him as anything else. I certainly know that any Dustin Rhodes/Runnels characters would be difficult to appreciate, in my opinion. Goldust was maybe too unique and acted so well by Dustin that anything else is too strange.

I agree about the character not being 'gay'. It was all about flaring up opposition, i think. The Roddy Piper feud was an example of this - Goldust was a spectacular heel as he was pushing them the then accepted bounds of decency (and now I think). I think it is probable that he will come back, as his character doesn't have a sell-by date, and i was surprised they couldn't have thought of anything to do with him - with Undertaker returning that would have presented an opportunity for a heel turn.

You may be right about Lance Storm, but Booker actually has charisma; he can and has gotten over with the fans. (Notice the pop in the tag match against La Resistance last week on Raw - even his god-awful Axe Kick is over with the fans) I'll admit that Booker and Goldust had excellent chemistry and good heat, but to say that Goldust was the reason for Booker T being over with the fans would be wrong and unfair.

I think the problem Dustin has is that regardless of what he's calling himself, people see him as Goldust. When he was in WCW last time around, much of what he did was based on how Russo hated him because he was Goldust. The most over move in Dustin's repetoire was the ol' boot in the nuts in the corner which he only started using as - you guessed it - Goldust. Without the gimmick, he seems somehow second rate, like he's missing something.

Admittedly, I loved the Goldust character. I found it to be a much needed breath of fresh air in 95 and he was absolutely hilarious with Booker T. Unfortunately, though, I think Dustin has typecast himself in the role. That said, in the end he's probably been around longer and accomplished more than he otherwise would have because he put on the paint and foil. It's hard to feel too bad for him.

It's been months since his release and the surprise has worn off but in this case I still feel the same. This guy certainly could still be used in a decent manner on the show.

The tag division is so lack luster. If they are going to put Booker in the tag ranks then let him team with Goldust & let this team that got surprisingly good chemistry together almost instantly allow them to be a major part of the show. I remember when BookDust battled for the tag titles, tag team wrestling was actually *gasp* interesting. If you going to have tag team wrestling, then why break up the few teams not named Dudley that connects with the crowd and actually seemed like a team even though they were very different and had successful single careers... For me this aspect of wrestling was always one of the hardest for me to buy, when they take 2 single wrestlers & put them in a tag team. It always seems like temporary thing & not real. But Booker & Goldust always seemed like a real team & even when they never got a legal team name from The E, I called them BookDust in my eyes they just seem like a real tag team

In a little Did You know of mine I looked up some info while writing this. BookDust only held the tag titles once for only 3 weeks(from Mid Dec 02/Early Jan 03). For the popularity that those two together, WWE didn't put the titles on them long or much.

I always thought the Booker T and Goldust team was all about the chase not the title in the end.
It's funny how no one else how mentioned how unlucky Dustin is with the electrocution box saga mirroring something early on in his career.
He was scheduled to work a programme with Bryan Pilman which was to shake off the Goldust image and help him get back his wife, of course it didn't happen so Goldust was shoved down and just started wearing all sorts of things Dog Collars and soft S&M devices whatever could cause offence he wore it an apparently he was the pits.
The same thing happened in this case naturally u think Goldust could have gone on to work a programme with Evolution - Batista and Orton but they were injured in a tag match with the Dudleys so once again Goldust found himself at a loose end again.

Both times eventually led to Contract releases.
