The big improvements for this version upgrade are additional navigation options for the Shop Channel and shorter loading times when bringing up channels. Also, according to a few incoming reports, the console's fan now runs while in WiiConnect24 mode, addressing rumors of Wiis overheating when left in standby.

Channels:

- Digital Clock added to the Wii Menu right under the channel bar
- Forecast Channel now displays the current condition directly in the Wii Menu in the Forecast Channel box
- News Channel can now show 2 scrolling headlines at a time in the Wii Menu, 3 when you click on the button
- Message Board now has the "Today's Accomplishments" message as a white message which allows it to stand out from other messages
- Address Book entries can now be shifted around using A+B but only to empty spaces.
- Calendar in Message Board no longer shows "Today's Accomplishment"
- Scrolling messages in the Message Board now uses a different sound

Wii Shop Channel

- New Welcome screen detailing 4 Recommended Titles and the points they cost. The title bar can be clicked on to bring up a list of 20 recommended games.
- Titles You've Downloaded was moved to the main shop menu
- New ways to browse
- Popular Titles
- Newest Additions remains the same
- Search for a title which can use partial names
- Search by Category
- Search by Publisher
- Search by Genre
- System shows the different systems and how many titles have been released under each

Settings

Pre-system update warning details that technically modified consoles may cease to function upon being updated. Also the only way to not accept an update is to power down the console by holding the button for 4 seconds.

Speaking of this....I noticed a few weeks back when I woke up that my WII was on in the morning. I brushed it off as me just leaving it on over night. However this morning I was watching TV when my WII just turned on by itself. I had the Wiimotes put away so there was no way that the power button were touched.

Is this normal? Is it due to an auto update feature built into the console that works with wireless Internet connections?

If not does this happen to anyone else. I'd look it up but I'm blocked from virtually every game site at work and this question is just too pressing for me to wait until I get home to read the manual!

I haven't had mine turn on by itself before, but I have had the overheating problem. Mine is in a cabinet that has a glass front, but air holes in the back and everything else I put in there doesn't have trouble. The Wii however will still turn on, but when you try to load a game from a disc it'll freeze up(not with Virtual Console games though). If I turn it off and let it sit for a bit to cool off it works fine. Hopefully this fixes the problem.

I'm almost tempted to give Boogie a try so I can at the very least have the microphone peripheral ready for Rock Band later this year. The trouble with that otherwise-flawless logic is...what the hell is Boogie supposed to be, anyway? After countless previews, I still don't understand the premise.

Another bad week for the VC. Last time there was a week this bad, the Big N unleashed Super Mario Bros. 2 a few weeks later. Here's hoping we get something REALLY good in a few weeks. I'm still on edge for Super Mario Bros. 3, LoZ: Majora's Mask, and Super Mario RPG (which I still regret selling my Super NES copy of, even 8 years later).

have you ever played Lolo? That's one of the best action/puzzle games I've ever played. It's totally worth the download.

Boogie is a dance game. The mic is just included so a second player can sing karaoke as you dance. But the singing isn't scored and the dance moves are "simplistic" according to IGN. You can supposedly record your performances to the internal memory, so that's...something. The game is aimed at kids. I don't think they're even trying to attract an adult audience.

We finally got a copy of it in at my store (which I, of course, bought myself.) Which means, just based on my luck, it'll be on the Virtual Console within a month. This I am sure of.

Heads up, guys. There's a serious problem with the new Wii system update if you're connected via the LAN adapter. I've lost my connection to the shop, forecast, and news channels. Internet and everybody votes still work. The error code it gives is 051420, but the Nintendo customer service website just has a blank page for that error code. Some of the users in the Nintendo forum are reporting the same problem. I'm going to give customer service a phone call tomorrow and see if I can get the problem resolved. I'll post an update then, but in the meantime I recommend anyone with a LAN adapter stay away from the system update right now.

If you've "modded" your Wii in any way, you're subject to the Error Message of Doom. If this includes connecting via a LAN adapter, that would be the epitome of lameness.

Rumour has Metroid (NES) and Super Metroid (SNES) coming to the Virtual Console this month in conjunction with the Metroid Prime 3 release, so that's something. Something I won't buy, sure, but lots of people love those games.

If you like video pinball, Devil's Crush is so worth the points.

I know Metroid's been re-released a couple of times already (as an extra in Metroid Prime 2, Metroid Fusion, and as a stand-alone GBA re-release), but I believe this is the first sign of Super Metroid since its original release. Tré bien!

Update - I talked to a customer service rep today. Apparently they've got guys working on the problem, and someone's going to give me a call back in a couple days. I can afford to be patient because I don't use the News channel and the Shop channel doesn't have anything I want right now. I'll let everyone know if I get this fixed.

Yep, I have the original Metroid for a few systems, but I haven't seen Super Metroid since its release. That's a first day purchase, along with the new Prime game.

I like the new features, although I haven't used the News channel in a while. I do check the Forecast channel quite a bit though. The Wii shop changes aren't very important to me, as long as the Newest Additions link stays up.

As a general Wii aside, I can't believe how long I've been playing Super Paper Mario. I usually don't replay games at all, but I feel obligated to get every treasure, card and recipe in this game. I guess it's a sign of a great game, although I didn't like the main plot of the game as much as Paper Mario 2: The Thousand Year Door for the GC.

I put $10 from my credit card into the shop. $5 went for the browser. With the other $5, I had to take my pick of NES games. I went with the original Legend of Zelda.

I forgot how little information you used to get in games. You're plopped down in the middle of the map with only a shield and no idea of where you're going. I found the first level entirely by mistake. The NES version probably came with a printed map (I wouldn't know, I was 4 when it came out. Doesn't that make you feel old?), and I can easily get a map at gamefaqs, but it's interesting to compare it with say, Twlight Princess, which holds your hand for the first 30 minutes.

$5 for the browser? You had to buy the internet channel?

If you didn't download it before June 30th (I think), you have to pay for it.

Not that five bucks isn't really worth it in the grand scheme of things. I'm perfectly content watching Youtube videos, ESPN 360, and new movie trailers on my TV.

fixed.

I don't think the original game even came with a map, I remember making my own out of grid paper. The second quest is even more punishing, with its secret doorways and having to blow the warp whistle on every screen.
