That was typical Rock on Smackdown, good ol' Rocky... but everyone knows that the Rock is doing his movies and won't be around much. There is no way he wins the title or gets into any long-term fueds. With the WWF (I'll never call it WWE.) themselves promoting Rock's movie career, it's pretty much common knowledge that he is limited to guest appearances. I don't think people are tuning in to see "what happens next" anymore. We know what happens next! Jericho will do the job that HHH refused to do... Edge will kiss Hogan's ass a little more... Vince will doing more stupid skits with his "ladies"... The cruiserweights, who really do an excellent job, will have to show their goods in another 20-man tag match limited to 3 minutes on air... you know the rest!

Rocky cannot have it both ways. It's painfully obvious that the fans at home could give a crap about Rocky returning to cut two promos and a run-in. At this point, I don't even think the eventual return of Austin will help.

I don't think I'll EVER get tired of this. I can see people actually feeling that way ten years from now, when 99.5% of the fanbase considers the WWF name as antiquated as "WWWF", there will still be that "I'LL NEVER CALL IT WWE!" minority getting laughed at. Just like today!

For the record, I NEVER called it WWWF. It's the NWA Capitol Wrestling league FOREVER!

as far as I can tell, jerky- you're the only one laughing. What are you, some message board heel or something? Why don't you go cut a promo on your mailman or something. "For the record, Mr. Postman... I'll never call it the USPS"

When you've been calling something the same thing for 20 years, you tend to want to stick with it. It's not a refusal thing. I called the LA Raiders the Oakland Raiders for ages. They moved back. I still slip and call the St. Louis Rams the Los Angeles Rams, the Titans the Houston Oilers. Maybe in a few years we'll all get used to it, but to me, it's still the WWF.

Good thing the Bullets changed their name to the Wizards. I mean the murder, robbery, and assault rates must have dropped at least 40% Now if Toronto would change it's name maybe dinosaur attacks would decrease too.

Back to the topic at hand...

I agree. Rock is never going to get anything accomplished in the (W)WWF/E as long as he's pulling this on again/off again thing. I certainly don't blame him for pursuing acting, but he can't burn the candle at both ends. The least he could do if he's going to be gone for a while is put an up-and-coming heel over CLEAN. Hopefully, that's what he'll do for Brock.

The least the Rock could do is get "crippled" before he leaves. And then when he comes back he isn't a smartass but out for revenge. Then he would lose again. It would be a good way to get over a monster heel.

The Rock's return seemed good enough. He had the crowd going, making everybody remember who he is.
Why did he fail? I don't check or care about ratings but I guess it has to do with that.
Who knows where they are going with his character..what if he can combine his acting and wrestling for a bit and he has a six month stay and an awesome run or something..who knows..

And btw..there is a difference between 'still calling a team by its old name because I am used to it' and actively going 'I refuse to call em this or that' the first is understandable, the second..well...a conscious choice that some might not understand to say it nicely ;)

The Rock didn't fail anything except meeting your expectations.

I'm a sports journalist and I'm currently covering an American Legion baseball team. Fifteen guys 17 or 18 years old and ALL of them said they got together and watched Smackdown last week for the first time in MONTHS just because the Rock was coming back. I asked them why and they said, "Because he's the only one on wrestling who's any good anymore."

15 marks can't be wrong.

It's not a rebellious thing. It's out of habit. Just like people will still call WWE the WWF. It's called a habit. It's what people are used to calling it. Eventually, everyone will call it WWE... out of habit.

The thing I don't get is when people say "I refuse to call it the wwe!" and stuff like that. What statement is this supposed to make exactly?

If it's really "just a habit" then why do people have to throw the old "I'll never call it the WWE" after they call it the WWF. Keeping with the same analogy, you don't call them the Oakland Raiders and then promptly add, AND I"LL NEVER CALL THEM THE LA RAIDERS. Nice try though.

Me, personally?? No, I never said it like that. I knew people who did say "I'll never call them..." with the Raiders, and the Rams, and the Titans. Eventually, they got over it. Just like everyone will eventually get over this name change.

But if they add "I'll never call them..." at the end, then it's obviously not a habit. They are obviously aware that they are saying the name wrong and are making a choice to do so.
