Looking back at recent history 2000 really stand out as the most consistent time for both entertainment and match quality in the WWE(F). Looking at the current rosters we've only really lost Mankind from the serious wrestler in that period and gained RVD, Lesner, Booker, Hogan and Flair so why is there such a big differential between the quality of the two era's? Is it HHH's injury? Poor writing? Politics resulting in the wrong people gettish pushes? Or simply a desperation for ratings?

It's the lack of serious competition.

back in the Monday Night Wars days, both WCW & WWF put on decent matches and decent PPvs just to out do the other.

Now with only one game in town (NWA-TNA ain't a treat, beleive me), WWE's gone lazy, because they beleive that no matter what they put up there, we will watch it.

Simple as that.

More specifically, I think that the lack of competition has not only madethe WWE lazy, but with the idea of "no competition means everyone will watch us," I think WWE is expecting imediate pay offs.

They keep throwing these lazy, half assed storylines that have no end in sight. Without any structure to the story (beginning middle end) is just falls apart.

They have no direction right now. And they are fishing around hoping that something just clicks (not Kilques).

It may have something to do with Stephanie having a lot of creative control. (inexperienced writer cannot see stories though to fruit) Or maybe it's politics. (abmitious wrestler wants all the glory, but in the mean time drops the axe on their own head and the rest of the roster) Or a combination of both.

Who knows.

Bottom line, they have no direction. I bet they have no clue as to what is going to happen at Wrestlemania. And that's sad, considering that in the past they have always had a direction (at least up to the next Wrestlemania.)

I think the biggest problem has been the writing. It has been inconsistent at best, lazy and boring at worst. This probably stems from the "no competition theory."

One major factor was Austin, Taker and Billy Gunn getting injured. That opened up alot of space on the roster to push all the new talent they had.

When they came back it clogged up the system and everyone was stuck playing the same role for two years.

I can not see any correlation between bad writing and no competition theory. Hollywood has always had 1000X more competition and they still get shit like Men In Black 2 churned out daily. I can promise you that if TNA became big overnight and Turner brought back his own wrestling, the writing for the WWE shows wouldn't magically turn into well written drama.

The problem as how I see it is that wrestling is filled with so many lying, sneaky pieces of crap on every level that it drives away talented writers.

Actually, history has shown that competition improved WWE's writing. Before Nitro, WWE (then WWF), well, to be honest, they sucked. Then they got stiff competition, and eventually, it got better.

To quote Jack Black, "Not now, but over time."

Blah. You would think they could use some of this massive amount of money they have to hire some talented writers.... and a decent catch all to weed out the crap ideas. Give me a break. A good check will lure good writers in.

The biggest reason I think is the boring ass 20 minute promos. Mainly done by Austin and HHH. The evil what/Jed Austin interview and the HHH I am just that damn good are lame and got old. I fast forward or turned the channel during those interviews. Basicly the WWE has the same problem that WCW had. They forgot what the second W stood for. A skit needs to involve wrestling in some way. Does it start an angle? Does it forward or end an angle? If no then don't do it there is not point.
But things look better. Pushing new wrestlers even if not all of them will pan out. The last month the main event has been good. The PPV have been announced at least a week before the PPV.

They had 20 minute promos during the glory days as well. The difference was they many of those back then were very well written.

What the WWE needs is a author of novels or a creative writing teacher, who is a fan of wrestling. Someone out of the loop so to speak, a person who isn't tainted with the current goings on of the WWE. Give them the lead position of the creative team, and keep them away from the wrestlers so they could not show a bias toward certain persons. And make sure that all storylines have a definitive ending, even when injuries or cutbacks occur have answers for the sake of the storyline.

Yeah, the 20 minute interviews have been around since their last big rise. The difference is that I'm convinced that back then they set the show up like this:
"Okay, we need to get Triple H and Mankind going for the next PPV, what can we do to build some suspense?" "Well, I can start the show off with a promo claiming that....."

While now they've gotten so in the habit of the 20 minute interview that they don't even care what it's about anymore, so it goes something like this:
"Okay, we've got the matches all set, but we still need to fill the opening 20 minutes. Who can fill that spot for the week"

It's hard to explain (especially with a few beers in me), but it's like they missed the reason why the 20 minutes used to work so well. They used to set-up the next 110 minutes so that the show had purpose. Now they're treated like commercial breaks. "We know we have to have it, so lets just get it out of the way".

He's obviously less important than Austin or Taker, but if he hadn't gotten injured the New Age Outlaws could have gotten in the way of the TLC feud and if he hadn't come back it could have been Jeff Hardy feuding with Benoit over the IC title.

An interesting point, and one I certainly missed. And I know for damn certain that I'd rather see the New Age Outlaws than Billy and Chuck.

Excellent point. Even back in 2000, the promos were much more motivated, with a clear-cut objective. Now, it's just general bravado, "I'm the best, and I thought I'd come out and share some thoughts with you.. blah blah blah." If we wanted to watch strictly acting, we'd watch pros do it. I want a good mix.

I can't vouch for 3 years ago, but there is soooooo much filler in the show, now. From the mindless, repetitive commercials to the endless replays, it's almost intolerable. I had to stop watching Smackdown last Thursday, and go back and scan through the tape afterwards. It was that bad.
