The opening ceremonies are Friday night and so far no word has leaked as to who will light the Olympic Flame ? Could it be Dorothy Hamill or Peggy Fleming from Figure Skating fame ? Could it be one of the skiing Mahre Brothers ? Could it be Mike Eruzione from the 1980 Gold Medal Hockey Team ?

Or will the nWo punk out whoever has the flame and declare them the nWo-lympics ?

Maybe it should be Nancy Kerrigan, and then she could get whacked in the leg on the way up the stairs so Tonya Harding could scoop up the torch and light it instead.

I'm guessing its a choice between Guilliani and some form of a group or one particular firefighter. Even if it is tradition to have athletes light the flame, I somehow doubt any complaints will be made. I originally would've went with Stockton passing it off to Malone (Both Olympic Gold Medalists) to finish the job. For what it's worth, I guessed Ali in '96, so my perfect avg. is on the line.

It still creeps me a little bit that the Olympic Flame idea was started by Hitler.

And no doubt "I Can Be Your Hero Baby" by Julio Eglasias Jr. will be blaring on the loudspeakers. YIKES. That's no slight to The Champ, mind you. Just don't let it be Michael Johnson.

My guess would be the 1980 U.S. Hockey Team. It would take care of the patriotism, togetherness and charisma that would set it apart.

Of course, it might just be Donnie & Marie

We would, however, need to start the Olympics at some point.

I think they should bring Richard M. Nixon back from the dead and have him do it.

I didn't say it would be easy, Neo. I just said it would be the truth.

No no no -

See, I want Reagan to carry the flag from "Ground Zero".

I think it would be a very poignant moment. A man with Alzheimers reminding us to "Never Forget".

Seeing the whole team light the flame was very cool.

I was talking with my wife last night about the 80 Olympics since she doesn't remember much of it (She was born in '74), and the amazing thing is I can remember a few of the highlights (Hockey win over the Russians and Eric Heiden winning 5 gold medals) and it happened 22 years ago. That is so weird to be getting to the age where I remember something that happened so long ago now.

Where is Eric Heiden? They make such a big deal out of Dan Jansen and he's covering these Olympics, but I've heard almost nothing about Heiden. Isn't he a doctor now or something? Maybe I missed it when the speed skating stuff started over the weekend.

Eric Heiden is an orthopedic surgeon and is currently working with the US Speedskating Team. He was asked to carry the flame but not to light the cauldron - he declined the honor because he felt that anything short of lighting the cauldron would lessen his accomplishment.

I actually saw Eric Heiden win his 1,000M Gold Medal - we cut school for a few days under the guise of visiting colleges in the Northeast - a South Korean skater crashed into the wall right below us as we were leaving the Oval - our 4 smiling mugs were in the picture that wound up in our local NJ newspaper the next morning - our Headmaster met us at the door with paper in hand and asked how our visit to the various "colleges" went.....

The 1980 Olympic hockey team lighting the cauldron was very cool. I remember it vivdly since I was a sophomore in college during the Games that year and we gathered round the old black and white box.

And Heiden needs to grow up.
