Hey Yo...

EDIT: Damn spelling! DAMN!

The more I play Kingdom Hearts, the more I want to go back and play some of the older FF's and build into the new ones. I made it through the first and second, beat 7 and played the beginning of 8. But, which one's your favorite?

From the one's I've played, I'd say 7. The characters are ALL good, from Yuffie to Cloud to the diabolical Sephiroth. My biggest complaint was the story had too many damn twists, but it was a better game than 8 (which I HATED!). But, after playing a lot of Kingdom Hearts, I HAVE to play some of the older ones (even though NONE of the older characters are in the game), and build to the newer ones (maybe I'll even finish 8). Also, I am interested in 10, but never gave it a shot. Hearts was kind of my reintroduction back to the series, and the characters are all well done in that game.

Tactics does get honorable mention, though, I loved that game, too. But none compares to 7, in my mind (of course it is a bit biased, isn't it?).

I'd have to say X. I loved VII, but X had a more engrossing, to me, plot and characters. I liked the battle system more, switching in and out in the middle of the battle.

There are some parts which drag out too long ("Do I REALLY want to sit here and dodge lightning 200 times?"), but most of them even are pretty fun.

Plus it has the best FF mini-game to date (Blitzball is WAY better than cards).

Since everyone else is doing it (ok, not EVERYONE, but...)

Vikings (0-4) - Whoops, that kinda...Uh...Sucked. Hey but at least we looked better in the second half!
Badgers (5-0) - *Sigh.* Bye weeks sure are boring.
Twins (1-1) - Well, that wasn't so hot, now was it?
Buffy 7.2 earns a 8.8 Out of 10 for being the funniest episode since "Tabula Rasa" and without the dramatic ending. It might even have scored higher if my UPN's audio didn't cut out and I didn't have to watch it in closed captioning...

4 or 6 was my favourite. Cecil was a badass, and so was Kain (from 4). 6's story was rad as all fuck.

I'd go with V, the precursor to FF Tactics.

I'd go with I after that, thinking back to the many hours I burned on it back in the day.

I'd put VI third -- a rock-solid storyline.

I didn't care much for VII, and have left the subsequent games alone (though IX did tempt me).

Most of the FF games have a fatal flaw in my eyes -- the ease in which characters can be powered up to become interchangeable demigods. Individual, distinguishing skills or limit breaks don't mean much when any character can learn every spell in the game (through espers in VI, materia in VII). Why swing a sword when you can cast Ultima every turn? I believe this was addressed in X (a big grid-like skill system), but I haven't played that.

I'm this close to picking up Legaia 2, as I loved the first one.

FF III was the first game I felt like I really "beat," so I'd have to go with that and VII just for the story.

I know that the Chrono series technically *isn't* part of this, but IMO it deserves lauding.

Definitely VI. Great story, good system, tough fights, and lots of characters. The next three couldn't match it's greatness.

Oh yeah, VI was the debut of the cactuar. How could I forget that?

Considering VII is the only one I've played to any extent, I'd have to say it. However, I've got VIII & IX on the way, so that could change. II/IV was all right for the little bit I played. Chrono Trigger, though, was pretty damned good, and I think I'm going to dig Chrono Cross.

I just wish they'd made Cloud's story a lot more coherent. Also sucked when Aeris died, as I figured I'd be set whilst fighting Sephiroth when her last limit break was so strong.

VI ruled all.

That is, out of the ones I've played: I, IV, V, VI, VII, and VIII. I hear X is brilliant, but I can't say.

Anyway, I liked VI the most because, for startes, it's the only one to make me cry. Second because the battles are acually sometimes quite a challenge (I found that to be the biggest problem in VII, and VIII. TOO EASY!!!). Thirdly... uh... I liked the variety of weapons. Finding the best one for each individual was much more... challenging, for lack of a better word, than VII or VIII. And I found the graphics to be quite acceptable. I acually like the graphics in VI more than VII. My only issue with it is that the story after *SPOILERS*

Final Fantasy III (or VI) is, most likely, the greatest video game ever made, let alone the greatest Final Fantasy. Incredible graphics for a 16-bit game, amazing music for damn near any game, the most fleshed-out characters I've ever seen, the best magic system they've managed to impliment yet, a great villian, an excellent, multi-layered plot that never gets incoherent, none of that whiny exponential bullshit they wasted so much time with in the Playstation games and a playable Moogle character. That, my friends, is perfection.

(Oh, and for the record, the WORST Final Fantasy game - VIII. Here's a good idea - let's take everything that works about Final Fantasy and CHANGE IT! Let's see if we can't make upgrading your weapons a huge hassle *and* screw up the leveling system to the point that it's not even worth it! Let's take out the magic points and bring in a "draw" system that makes most of your time playing the game spent pulling "Cure" spells out of weak enemies! And let's make it so you're afraid to ever cast any of your strong magic because you don't know if you'll ever be able to get it again, and you have to use it to make your armor worthwhile anyway! And let's make the plot make NO FUCKING SENSE! They were in the same orphanage, you know. Yeah, that's possible. Good graphics - and the parade scene where you first see Edea is *awesome*, but a real step back.)

FF VII was the game that got me to buy the Playstation in the first place and is my favorite of the FF games I've played (VII, VIII, IX). FF VII is one of my absolute all time favorite games anywhere. It's the standard I use to judge new games and not many compare for me. I was going to buy a PS2 for FF X but when I heard the characters talking in the commercial I decided against it. Can you turn the voices off and play with dialogue boxes like in the previous games? I love the drama of the series and bad acting would take away from that in my eyes.

I'll agree with most of that, but I found Kefka to be rather one-dimensional, and the magic system was a MAJOR drawback for game balance. All you had to do was keep rotating your espers between the characters, and voila -- everybody knows every non-Blue Magic spell. Magic may have been extremely rare at the beginning of the game (enough that Locke and Edgar freaked out when they saw it for the first time), but it got pretty goddamn common by the end.

I mean, you could voluntarily limit it by not giving Edgar, Sabin, Locke, Cyan, etc. any espers and limiting those to the magically-attuned crew, but I'm surprised they didn't build that in in the first place.

Likewise, the Economizer was the most ridiculously overpowered accessory in RPG history. A high-level Terra with a Gem Box, Economizer and good equipment could beat the game _solo_.

I'm actually capable of beating that one. I hate the rest. They're far too hard and require thinking/strategy.

X and VI were probably the best. X is just so great compared to all of the other playstation final fantasies.
If for no other reason than the objective at the beginning of the game is still the objective at the end of the game.
And FFV was a cruel, cruel joke.

I don't think you could get both the Gem Box and Economizer. You had to bet the Gem Box at the stadium to get the Economizer and you lost it after the battle.

Anyway, my order is VI, IX, VII, I, and VIII.

I'm currently playing IV on FF Chronicles, so I can't rate it just yet.

I'm surprised that IX hasn't been mentioned more. Definitely my favorite for the PS so far.

Hey Yo...

I'm currently playing the ORIGINAL 2nd in the series on my NES emu. A decent game, but I CAN'T WAIT to get to 4 on a 16 bit system. Period. Plus, I've gotten to play 4, but I never OWNED a Super Nintendo, so I missed out on it. Can't wait to get crackin' on those, when I have time.

On a sidenote, I'm shooting an indie film and my time is REALLY tight, so videogames are a rarity, even though I find ways to fit in an hour of Animal Crossing. So, it'll be a good month or two or three before I get to BEAT 2 and 3 on the nes. Oh, well.

You could also get Economizers (as many as you wanted to spend the time getting, in fact) from Brachosaurs on the dinosaur island, and steal Ribbons from them as well. Once you could beat a Brachosaur without using Invis + X-Zone, the game was effectively over -- repeat (while rolling up major EXPs) until you had four Economizers, then melt all opposition at 1 point per spell.

Final Fantasy 7. Greatest. Game. Ever. Period, end of sentence. Battle system is incredible, the music is ungodly great, and Sephiroth is the most single-handedly evil being ever. Except Aeris. She's worse. English teachers should make the story of this game required reading/playing. This is better than ANY novel or book that I have ever read.
