I guess I'm going to bite the bullet and get an XBOX 360 very soon. Should I just get the core system of the fancy-schmancy system?
I imagine I'll get Oblivion, Fight Night 3, and Ghost Recon. Do I really need the hard drive and online stuff for games like that? Would the core system suffice?

You must get the system with the hard drive. You'd be crazy not to. First, without it you have to buy a memory card anyway, which is like $30. Second, plenty of space to save music, themes and such, but most importantly demos and arcade games. I didn't realize how much I would like those features but they have some great old and new arcade type games that are cheap and fun to download and being able to get demos online to try before buying is an awesome thing.

Plus the core comes with the wired controller and you want the wireless that comes with the main system. Works as good as a Wavebird in my experience.

Also you can't play Xbox games (I know the backward compatible list isn't long, but still) without the hard drive. Haven't done much of that anyway.

Also for some of those games there will be patches with new areas, maps or characters to download and add to the game. Ghost Recon I'm sure will have some new maps at some point.

I know that Oblivion is going to have downloadable content available at some point (if not already -- I seem to recall hearing some sort of hubbub about paying to download gear for your horse), so it probably is worth it to eat the extra cost and get the hard drive.

Yeah I think you're right on Oblivion. I've already downloaded patches and add ons for some games. Kameo had an update patch that added some new features like co-op online play. Call of Duty had a major patch that actually made it playable online finally. Perfect Dark has a patch that is supposed to be out any day now with a bunch of new maps and glitch fixes, plus lots of new bot types. Madden may have roster updates, and if not I'm sure it will soon. Haven't played it for a while.

I'm just geeked about the new PDZ maps. Got tired of the limited number that came with the game.

So yeah, tons of reasons to need a hard drive. Heard they may release a larger model hard drive soon, but oh well. Oh and you get the headset for online play with the main system plus, which is not great but you can't really use the old Xbox headsets(no mute) so nice to have thrown in.

Alright dudes, I bought the Premium package. Ghost Recon is totally awesome and I haven't even played Oblivion yet. Whew!
I know this will make me sound crotchety, but this is the first time I've ever played with a wireless controller. I must say it is great, like flying to Shambala on the Bird of Paradise. Of couse, I have a long history of controller physics research through throwing them across the room. How well does the new controller fly? Probably not as well as the PS3 Batarang.
Seriously though, I love the 360.

The only reason you should get a core is if you get an excellent deal on it (to make up for the money you'll spend on a hard drive (about 100 bucks) and either a VGA or component video cable if you have a HDTV (about $30), and a wireless controller if you want it ($40-50). I was able to get about $60 off the core, with discounted hard drive/cables/controller where it worked out to me actually saving a little than if I had bought a premium. Plus I hate the look of the premium, the chrome looks really cheesy to me.

The above posts are right though - you'd be nuts to buy a core over a premium if you're paying regular price.

New CoD2 maps are on the way next week, but unfortunately they'll be costing more than I'd think the should. I think the first four maps are 200 points, with another set in June costing NINE HUNDRED points. You'd think with people moving on from CoD2 they'd make them cheaper to provide more incentive for people to play. Not to mention the fact that they're free on the PC version.

See, finally some other people finding out how cool this system is! I haven't been on much lately what with Kingdom Hearts 2 taking up my time, but as soon as the new maps for Perfect Dark are out I'll jump on there. I've got Ghost Recon as well, just haven't played it much. Fun game though, just don't have a ton of time these days.

Or you could wait with the rest of the world for the PS3 and if you pass on that hopefully the 360 could see some sort of price drop (as hopefull as that may sound).
At least wait till E3 to see the PS3 in action.

Ok, so Microsoft did have a very big thing up it's sleeve for today as well.

"Grand Theft Auto IV October 16 to Xbox 360 ONLY."

The past two days have made me very glad I purchased this system. Not only that but they say they will use Live to update it with new content after release.

...and have entered into an agreement with Rockstar to provide "exclusive episodic content" over XBox Live.

Wow.

Sony is SO dead in the water.

Grand Theft Auto IV, exclusively to the 360. Halo 3. The PS3 costing $600.

All of these things are adding up to a high wall that Sony is going to have a hard time getting over...especially if the 360 price drop rumors have any cred to them.

Bleh, they added a 2007 to that GTA release date. Still very big news, but a bit of a letdown. Also the person doing the play by play of the conference got an email from Rockstar anouncing the game to be release on 360 and PS3 at the same time so this is strange now.

Probably should wait until the show is done, but some other stuff that is only kinda interesting.

"12:51: Scot Henson, director of platform strategy for Xbox and Windows takes the stage to show off Live Anywhere. Starts up game of Shadowrun, connects with friends list--which shows whether his friends are on a PC, Xbox 360, or mobile phone. He sends message to Major Nelson, who is working on a Vista PC. On the right-hand side is his friends list, just like Xbox 360--GamerTag on there too. Henson says acheivements on any platofrm will add to one single gamer score, and GamerTag will be the same too.

12:53: Live Anywhere will have the same reputation anywhere, says Henson. He then pulls out a Motorola Q cell phone with Windows Mobile. The phone has the Xbox Arcade games he downloaded on his Xbox 360 ON HIS PHONE. He plays a game of Zuma. Then he plays a music video he downloaded onto his Xbox 360 on his phone. The phone menu also has a movie options for "X-Men.""

Wait, achievements on a PC? Do I get a lot of gamer points for my MCSE then? All this downloadable stuff will need a bigger hard drive on the 360 one would think, but ok. Neat feature I guess.

There's gonna be a 100gig HDD coming out before the Christmas holidays hits this year, and especially before Halo 3 comes out, given that there's supposed to be a map editor included with the game.

A few thoughts:

Picked up Oblivion and played for a few minutes. Seemed like a cool game, just don't have time to really get into it yet.

Mostly because I got Battlefield 2 and whoa. Fast pace, plenty of people playing right now and crazy matches. Very much my favorite online game right now. Probably overall for the 360. Never really got into CoD much and Perfect Dark still doesn't have new maps so bleh. But this game rules.

Also, got the nice Harmony remote with 360 interface included and OMG. I've had more expensive programmable remotes before and they were a pain to set up and kinda clumsy. This thing is a pure joy. Plug in the USB cable to the PC and the set up was soooo easy to plug in make a model of all my componants and customize. I was done in 10 minutes with everything set up perfectly. Sony HDTV, Pioneer Receiver, Moxi cable box, even my Pelican system selector down to the exact model were all in the setup program. Not just there, but every button functioning exactlly like I wanted it. Plus having the 360 buttons on there is really handy. You must get this is you have a setup like mine. $130 I think, it was a gift cause I'm old now.

Once you start playing you won't stop..
I even enjoy watching friends play it, simply because it's fun to watch them sneak, kill, talk, quest, etc etc etc.

*sigh* Why bother?

None of that is confirmed. There are strong rumors that a larger hard drive is coming this Christmas - suggesting anywhere from 60 to 100 GB, but they've said nothing yet. Halo 3 having a "map editor" is just a rumor as well.

As far as GTA IV on the 360, yes, it's not exclusive...but the fact that Microsoft mentioned it and Sony said nothing makes a bigger impact in people's minds than if Sony had announced it first, with Microsoft just saying "yeah, us too." I have no idea why Sony didn't say anything about it. Maybe they were too busy plugging Riiiiiidge Racerrrrr!

Hey just ran across this and thought I would post it. It's a good deal on the Plantronics Xbox headset. It's the green gamecon one and works awesome on the original Xbox. I don't use mine on the 360 though because it doesn't have inline mute unfortunatly. Though I did buy their 360 model which is similar and works well too. And I'm probably gonna get the new bluetooth model which is out next week from what I've read.

Anyway, $14.95 for a $50 headset that works great, if anyone wants it.

The DS is not region-protected and you can order whatever from wherever. I bought a Japanese version of Picross DS before the game was released in North America and it played just fine.
