I sent my PS3 back to Sony. They sent me a box. I packed up my system and it went on the 4-day FedEx Ground journey to Laredo, TX. The same day it was delivered, a system shipped out, so they turned it around in less than a day. Four days later, I received my brand-new (not new) PS3...
...then I plugged it in. And it said I needed a Firmware update, so I did that. When I got the 53% of downloading, my screen froze, then turned green. WTF? More talk with Sony...I tried to run the system in safe mode. That didn't work, either. So they sent me ANOTHER box. When my box showed up, I thought "before I pack this up I'll give safe mode one more try" and hey, it worked! I got back to the Firmware update...and the same crash happened, only at 46% this time. Shit.
So my replacement system #1 made the 4-day trek to Laredo, TX, and then right away they shipped out another replacement system, which I finally received today. I opened it up and everything was working fantastically (other than PSN, of course)...until I tried to put a disc in. The disc would only go in about 3%, although the motor that sucks it in was trying to work. Shit.
Another call to Sony and this time they had me talk to a "service specialist". And now they are sending me paperwork to overnight ship FedEx and they are going to ship it back overnight, cutting a week off my turnaround time, AND for all the hassle they are going to send me a copy of MLB '11: the Show for free.
So this had been a huge pain in the butt due to the bad luck in which systems got pulled for me, but the people and their responses and the ease in dealing with the service have all been outstanding.

For what it's worth, my PS3 died mere days before the warranty expired, and Sony replaced it in a flash and I haven't had any problems with it since. (Well, nothing beyond the "stolen personal information" and "endless system updates," I mean.) Say what you will about their... well, their everything else, but I was very impressed with their warranty service.
Game Informer did a cover story on this a while ago, and I was really hesitant to get behind it even though they seemed optimistic. We've been fed a whole bunch of lame Transformers games over the years, so it's hard to buy into it.
