1. Tio Leo's in Mission Valley....If you know the place you might scratch your head and say.... "really?". It's not the fanciest restaurant but it's her favorite. It was the perfect place to drop the question for her.

2. I asked her mom (her dad was drunk....as is typical) and received my approval.

1--> I read a poem that I had written to her in front of the Christmas tree in her living room and presented her with a ring that had the diamond from her Great-Grandmother's wedding ring.

2--> No, but it was generally assumed that we were getting married anyways.

And congrats to the Goon! So, Rob, when are the nuptials? Will she do all the planning (to go back to another thread)?

Q1: I proposed on bended knee and shaking hand in our garage. We were coming back from her father's Christmas party and I wanted to swing by the local park to do it but she kept complaining about a headache and that we should just get home. She actually grew irritated when I told her I had to give her a six-month anniversary present since she hadn't gotten me one. So I took a chance and asked her in the garage and she asked me if it was for real. Her headache seemed to go away.

Q2: I asked her mother instead and she even helped me pick out the ring.

1) In our house.

2) Nope -- never even occurred to me. It was pretty much understood, though, I think.

We're looking at next August, hopefully in the mountains of Banff. We have a moratorium on wedding discussion until after Stampede is done, but I'm hoping that my job in the wedding planning ended with my proposal.

Congrats to you Goon!!

Just remember these phrases...

- Yes dear! (don't use this one very often...)

- That sounds ________ (insert various words here, wonderful, lovely, awesome, great, fantastic)

- I think everyone will love that

- Whatever you think dear, you are better at this than me...

We were driving back from her Aunt's wedding in Kansas and I - very not romantically - asked her "if I asked you if you wanted to get married, what would you say?" This was in September and the ring was her Christmas present.

At that time she had a difficult relationship with her parents and it would not have been appropriate for me to have asked her father's blessing.

I think I've told the story, but I proposed on May 4, 2007, during an Arcade Fire concert. I waited until the song "Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)". Arcade Fire is our favorite band and "(Tunnels)" is OUR song. We were holding hands throughout the show, so I wound up just passing her the ring. The ring was my mother's when she married my father. They've been divorced since 1988, but she still had the ring and asked if I wanted it. Anyway, my now-fiance took it, and looked at me all confused. I shouted "MARRY ME!!!!!" and she started laughing and crying and said "OK!!!". It was really nice because I did it in front of a whole lot of people, but no one really knew b/c they weren't paying attention.

I didn't ask her dad b/c they aren't on the best of terms. You better believe I asked her mom, though!

Hey, I get to answer this question now!

On July 31 we closed on our first place together. The next day we brought over a bunch of supplies to start painting and making it look the way we want it to. She was fiddling with some paint cans and I asked her to come over to where I was working with stuff so I could get her opinion on something. When she came over I asked her opinion on getting married to me.

I didn't ask her dad, but the blessing was already kind of given as we had talked about marriage before with her folks.

In a nightclub. I wasn't actually thinking about it, but I blurted it out. She said yes.

No, I didn't. Both of her parents(divorced) live at least a 3 hour drive from me, and I didn't have his number. He was cool about it, though.

I proposed in a limo on the way back from brunch at Tavern on the Green. I was suppossed to propose at brunch but there were so many people around that I got really nervous. The only way I could relax was to put the ring away until afterwards. It was actually better as it was more private.

And yes, I asked her father. He was (retired now) a homicide detective and an old school Irishman. Also he was/still is a douche bag and by not asking him ahead of time would have given him some ammo to be a bigger douche bag.

Bistro Zinc in North Miami Beach. Fantastic restaurant, I recommend it to anyone in the Miami area who's looking for a meal that is both fancy and delicious. I did not ask her parents ahead of time.

I proposed on August 21, which was the day we'd first met in person (we actually met on the Internet). We went out to dinner at a place in downtown Manhattan; I'd bought her a Beanie Baby as a present and sewed the ring on the bottom.

Her father is dead, and her mother is, well, not all there, so I felt no obligation to consult with 'em. She'd told me that her brother had already given her the "When is that guy gonna make a honest woman out of you?" speech, so I didn't expect any opposition there either.

1) I took her back to the Dairy Queen where I first met her; I'd bought custom made M&M's that read either: "I love you Emily" and "Will you Marry Me?"... used them as a prop, and then showed the ring.

2) Yes I did; I called ahead and asked if I could come over. They were clearly wise to my plan, even though I had only known her for 2 months, they had figured from the start it probably wasn't going to take long. Her father greeted me, cleaning his kitchen knives, and told me "I hear you want to talk to me?" That actually lightened the mood and it went swimmingly.

Q1) We talked about it and decided to get married. YAY ROMANCE.

Q2) Nope. Was specifically requested not to - not for fear that her dad would object (he's a good dude! we get along fine), but it's not his call to make, you know?

#2 - Yup. He looked me straight in the eye and said "no". Then he laughed his ass off and said "sure".

Postscript: she later broke up with me 5 months before the wedding. They can't all be happy stories.

Hey, I forgot I posted in this one before. I've got a new addition (from two years ago).

#1 - Went to a spa with an attached hotel, and I let her open the door while I was behind her with the luggage. When she turned around, I was already on my knee.

#2 - I went out to the future in-laws campsite, and was planning on asking, but in the meantime I got her father completely blitzed, and he spent the entire night (without prompting) telling anyone who would listen "Jeff's a good guy. I give him my bleshing." So I figured that probably counted.

Postscript: this one actually married me, and now we have a son, so I feel more confident that this one will last. :)

Same deal here, though asking her parents first never came across my mind or hers.
