My thoughts exactly; I'm thinking that I could easily make a Hot 100 list on this topic. Some of the better ones have already been mentioned above; for example, Cerebus' choice of "Crying In the Rain" would be near the top of my list (though I've never heard A-Ha's version, I'm very familiar with the original by the Everly Brothers). Dunkndollaz has also mentioned one of my personal favorites (and, yes, I also remember watching the original airing of the Family Ties episode on NBC which featured this song). Eddie Famous has cited one of George Jones' best offerings, but you could easily name enough songs by the Possum on this topic to fill a double album.
So, while this is a list that could go on forever, allow me to add just a few that I believe deserve a mention. On the topic of a heartache caused by a breakup, one song that jumps immediately to mind is this one by Skeeter Davis:
The End of the World
Why does the sun go on shining? Why does the sea rush to shore? Don't they know it's the end of the world? 'Cause you don't love me anymore
Why do the birds go on singing? Why do the stars glow above? Don't they know it's the end of the world? It ended when I lost your love
I wake up in the morning and I wonder, Why everything's the same as it was I can't understand, no I can't understand, How life goes on the way it does
Why does my heart go on beating? Why do these eyes of mine cry? Don't they know it's the end of the world? It ended when you said good bye.
This next selection was originally released by Arthur Alexander, and while there's absolutely nothing wrong with his version, I personally prefer The Beatles' cover, with John Lennon on lead vocal:
Anna (Go To Him)
Anna, you come and ask me girl To set you free, girl You say he loves you more than me So I will set you free Go with him (Anna) Go with him (Anna)
Anna, girl before go now I want you to know now That I still love you so, But if he loves you more, Go with him
All of my life I've been searching for a girl To love me like I love you Oh now But every girl I ever had breaks my heart and leaves me sad, what am I, what am I supposed to do Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,
Anna, just one more thing girl You give back your ring to me And I will set you free, Go with him
All of my life I've been searching for a girl To love me like I love you But let me tell you now But every girl I ever had breaks my heart and leaves me sad, what am I, what am I supposed to do Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,
Anna, just one more thing girl You give back your ring to me And I will set you free, Go with him (Anna) Go with him (Anna) You can go with him girl (Anna) Go with him
Hopefully you all won't think less of me for admitting this, but it's damn near impossible for me to listen to this Vince Gill song without getting a little misty-eyed:
When I Call Your Name
I rushed home from work like I always do. I spent my whole day just thinking of you. When I walked through the front door, my whole life was changed 'Cause nobody answered when I called your name.
A note on the table that told me goodbye Said you'd grown weary of living a lie. Oh, your love has ended, but mine still remains; But nobody answers when I call your name.
Oh, the lonely sound of my voice calling Is driving me insane. And just like rain, the tears keep falling; But nobody answers when I call your name.
Oh, the lonely sound of my voice calling Is driving me insane. And just like rain, the tears keep falling; But nobody answers when I call your name. Oh, nobody answers when I call your name.
It should be mentioned at this point that, as painful as the heartache over a love that is over can be, there is another, much more painful heartache that one can feel: the heartache of a love that never was. For example, there's this classic by Conway Twitty:
It's Only Make Believe
People see us everywhere They think you really care But myself, I can't deceive I know it's only make believe
My one and only prayer Is that some day you'll care My hopes, my dreams come true My one and only you No one will ever know How much I love you so My only prayer will be Someday you'll care for me But it's only make believe
My hopes, my dreams come true My life I'd give for you My heart, a wedding ring My all, my everything My heart I can't control You rule my very soul My only prayer will be Someday you'll care for me But it's only make believe
My one and only prayer Is that someday you'll care My hopes, my dreams come true My one and only you No one will ever know How much, I love you so My prayers, my hopes and my schemes You are my every dream But it's only make believe
I'll close (for now) with this song that was recorded by practically everyone, including Elvis; though for my money the quintessential version belongs to Ray Charles:
You Don't Know Me
You give your hand to me And then you say hello I can hardly speak My heart is beating so And anyone can tell You think you know me well But you don't know me
Oh you don't know the one That thinks of you at night Who longs to kiss your lips And yearns to hold you tight No I'm just a friend That's all I've ever been You just don't know me
I never knew the art of making love Though my heart aches with love for you Afraid and shy, I let my chance go by The chance that you might love me too
You give your hand to me And then you say goodbye I watch you walk away Beside the lucky guy You'll never, never know The one who loves you so 'Cause you don't know me
I never knew the art of making love Though my heart aches with love for you Afraid and shy, I let my chance go by The chance that you might love me too
You give your hand to me And then you say goodbye I watch you walk away Beside the lucky guy Oh you'll never know The one who loves you so You just don't know me
I Wanna Be Around Sinatra's version on It Might As Well Be Swing is perfect as his delivery is fueled by Ava Gardner-based hatred.
I Wanna Be Around lyrics by Johnny Mercer
I wanna be around to pick up the pieces when somebody breaks your heart,
Somebody twice as smart as I.
Somebody who will swear to be true like you used to do with me,
Who'll leave you to learn that misery loves company, wait and see.
I wanna be around to see how he does it when he breaks your heart to bits,
Let's see if the puzzle fits, so fine,
And that's when I'll discover that revenge is sweet,
As I sit there applauding from a front row seat,
When somebody breaks your heart like you broke mine.

That's the EXACT type of song I was thinking of. Can't find the Frank version online, but the Tony Bennett version aint too bad.

"I Hate Love Songs" by GWAR. Actually, anything by GWAR helps me deal with any amount of stress.
Here's the lyrics.
I hate love songs and I hate lovers I hate everything that I can't have so I hate you I hate love songs and I hate lovers I hate everything that I can't have so I hate you I hate movies with happy endings Like that one I saw where all the girls were beautiful like you Like you I hate wet dreams and masturbation I hate everything that feels good like sex with you I hate flowers and little birdies Makes me wanna puke when I see something cuddily like you I'm bored with your insanity I'm too tired to smile at your stupidity You've got the very best of me fell in love push came to shove but you broke so easily I love hate songs 'bout mass destruction other people's pain takes my mind off you I love puppies when they're road-kill They're too cute too live, too cute to live like you I'm bored with immortality I'm too tired to stick it out for eternity You've got the very best of me fell in love push came to shove and you broke so easily I hate love songs I hate love so I hate you

When the girlfriend I had before my wife dumped me, one song helped me channel the rage:
"Quitter" by the Toadies
Didn't I give you everything? Didn't I take you where you want to be? Didn't I make you feel just like a queen? And all that time I thought that I was gettin' somethin' right
Look me in the eye and tell me somethin' Am I supposed to walk away with nothin'? Do I convince myself we never happened? Well I guess I won't be denied I'm gettin' somethin' right
Lover! Are you happy now? Quitter...QUITTER!
In the coming days the dust will cover All the evidence of your first lover I hope wherever you are now you'll wake up And see just what a mess you made of this 'Cause I'm gettin' somethin' right
Am I gettin' somethin' right?
Lover! Are you happy now? Quitter...QUITTER!
In the same vein, I enjoy Rodney Carrington's "I Hope You Die", which has the following lyrics. You're probably familiar with it if you listen to Bob & Tom.
Woke up this morning, and you were gone, I found a note, it says “so long”, You said this love would last our lives, I hope your face breaks out in hives.
I hope you die a painful death , I hope you choke on your next breath, You screwed me up you’ve done me wrong, I hope you die ‘fore too long.
I hope you have a heart attack, I hope your breasts get really slack, You were my girl but now you're not , I hope you die, I hope you rot.
I don’t wanna be your friend, I only want your life to end, You’re back in town, someone else’s gal, I hope you drown in the love canal.
I hope you die a painful death, I hope you choke on your next breath, You screwed me up, you’ve done me wrong, I hope you die ‘fore too long, I hope you die ‘fore I end this song, I hope you die, I really, really hope you die,
Die, die, die, die…fuckin' die.
Oddly enough, she and I ended up having a relatively amicable break-up in the end and are still friends today. But I was really messed up for a while there, clearly.

I was on vacation for the past 2 weeks (excellent timing, me) and just got back Thursday night. I went grocery shopping Friday. Went to Safeway around noon and Costco around 2:30. Both were busier than usual but neither was terrible.
