I know exactly what you mean. My brother preferred DK/Bowser for their raw speed, most of my friends preferred Yoshi/Princess for the quick recovery, or Mario/Luigi for being tough to push around, but the real MVPs were Toad/Koopa since they could turn on a dime and zoom off in a new direction before anyone else could react.
Then in Mario Kart for N64, they both suck. It took me a while to finally accept this and move on to others players.

A sentimental choice goes to Mario 3, because it was such a great game on the NES at the peak of my video game craziness. But Super Mario World is still my favorite game of all time. Maybe not the best graphics compared to today, but damn that game was fun, something Nintendo has always seemed to make priority one.

Honorable mention to Mario Kart: Double Dash. My cousin and I had a great time playing cooperatively to beat that game with Koopa Troopa and Para Troopa (their special weapons of 3 shells were the best at holding the lead).
The original Super Mario Bros. is still my favorite. It was my first game and I suppose I've carried a torch for it ever since. It can be a deceptively challenging game (especially if your game-playing senses have been dulled by modern video games where you can save anywhere you like), there were tons of secrets to discover (by accident or by deliberately punching every square inch of screen trying to find a hidden 1-up block), the enemies were cool (always liked Bullet Bills and uh... somebody help me... the black beetle dudes) and the music... wow - we're talking about some of the most infectious and iconic video game music of all-time.
Don't get me wrong, other games in the series have been great too, but the original still has the charm and magic for me.
My fave of all time is #3. The original is a close second, but it loses out thanks to the depressing story of my best friend at the time playing it forever, finally getting to King Koopa only to have his little sister walk in and knock the system off the shelf by accident. Man, were we pissed.
It's funny this thread came up because I finally brought a new video game system for the first time in about 10 years just a couple of days ago (my last system was Genesis). I got a Nitendo DS XL and what was my first game purchased? Mario Cart DS. My first download? Dr. Mario.
