I figured this might be an appropriate topic, with Super Mario Galaxy set to be released in a few days. It's a hard question, since there are more than enough games to choose from (if you include the Kart series, the sports games, Mario Party, etc).

For me, it's still Super Mario World. Yoshi alone, the awesome amount of variety in a lot of levels, the cape power up, Star Road...it's one of the games that I've repeatedly beaten, that I'll still go back and play.

Honorable mentions: Super Mario 64 (I almost had this as my favorite; it's the best 3-D platformer EVER, IMO), Super Mario 2 (the red-headed stepchild of the franchise, but still a fun game), and Super Mario 3 (You wanted the power-ups? You got the power ups!).

Seconded. This is not only my favorite Mario game, but my favorite game period.

Mine would definitely have to be Super Mario RPG, sure it's a guided role playing game, but I think the storyline is great and the game is just all around fun.

Mario 3, hands down.

Frog suit, Tanuki suit, the ability to fly, and GIANT WORLD!

Good times.

The Tanooki suit. Man, what was up with that? "We're going to make this suit that you can fly in like the raccoon tail, but you can also turn into stone." Turning into stone was like the most useless thing ever. And then that one random level with the Kuribo's Shoe that you could hop around in? That was weird too.

I didn't really get good at video games until the SNES, so I like Super Mario World (and A Link To The Past for Zelda games). It did a great job building on the foundation that SMB3 laid. Finishing the Star Road and finding out that the season had turned into fall, and the pirahna plants had turned into pumpkin plants was hilarious. I remember having real trouble getting the last stage I needed. It was the secret ending for the Ghost House in the Valley of Bowser.

Well, you're wrong. Turning to stone made you invincible, and it's the only way to kill those spinning discs in the castles. Sure, it's no Hammer Suit, but what is?

I had an NES Game Genie and I used to love to have the "always in Hammer Suit" code and run through levels as far as I could. I think one of the ice levels was impossible because fireballs were needed.

If Super Mario World had added a Giant World and maybe 2 more wacky power ups, it would have been perfect.

Count me in on the Super Mario World train. In fact, both this and my favorite Zelda game (Link to the Past) are SNES entries. Kind of says something about my video game preferences.

64 is second, followed by 3 as a cloooooose third. The sheer novelty (at the time) of exploring a huge world like we were given in 64 was such a classic experience that it trumps the greatness of 3.

I think 64 had too much to do in it, so I don't rank it above either 3 or World. I ultimately go with SMB 3. It was just such an improvement over 2 (and I really liked 2) and added so much more depth and fun.

Honorable mention goes to Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time for the DS.

Like Eventhis said though, give me a week or two and Galaxy might be at the top of the list (especially if it is as good as the early reviews say it is).

That's a good mention -- it's nice to see the portable Mario games get some love, since they tend to be overlooked. Heck, I just looked at Wikipedia's entry for Super Mario Land (from the original Game Boy), and was surprised to find out that it's the 3rd highest selling game of the entire series:

I'll go with New Super Mario Bros. for the DS. Just a great reinvention of the Mario platformer.

I loved the Super Mario All-Stars compilation for the SNES...both the NES and SNES versions of Super Mario 2 would qualify as my favorite Mario game.

However, interestingly enough, I downright detested the version of the game for the GBA.

I've seen 17 movies so far this year: Because I Said So - (2*); Borat - (5*); Children Of Men - (4*); Die Hard 4 - (5*); Evan Almighty - (3.5*); Fantastic Four 2 - (4.5*); Hairspray - (5*); Harry Potter 5 - (4*); Knocked Up - (4*); The Last Mimsy - (4*); Mr. Brooks - (4*); Resident Evil: Extinction - (3.5*); Shrek The Third - (3*); Simpsons Movie - (3*); Spiderman 3 - (3.5*); Superbad - (1*); Transformers - (2*)

I second the nomination for New Super Mario Brothers. It got me to love the Mario franchise again.

3 is a very close second. World was always too hard for me in places.

And I always kinda liked 2, as non-Mario as it was.

SMB 3 ate up most of my childhood. It definitely gets the thumbs up from me.

Super Mario RPG comes damn close for not only being a damn good Mario game, but also turning me on to RPG's period. If it wasn't for that fact that the game is hideously easy, it would have surpassed SMB 3 as my fave.

I'll add on to Torchslasher's honorable mention for Partners in Time, just because there were so many genuinely laugh-out-loud moments throughout.

I really enjoyed the SNES Mario Kart. It was the only Mario Kart game to have the feather, which let you shortcut through the level. And when someone would fire a red shell at you, you'd jump up and down and hope that it would knock the shell off course.
I guess what I'm saying is that I enjoyed doing things that people who were knew at the game didn't know how to do.
Plus it was fun beating people as Toad. In the later games, Toad doesn't seem to be as good.

As a Bengals fan, it's currently the rest of the AFC North, but I have a special loathing for the 49'ers and Joe Montana. Oh yeah, and I hated Too Cool when they were around too (you didn't say it had to be sports teams :-)
