Yesterday: $2.959 (and unbelievably, I filled up before it went up!)
Today: $3.199

Rather dramatic!

I wish I filled up, but I only went halfway. I wish I realized that $2.959 was a bargain. I'm a fool!

So is gas going to jump everytime there is the slightest threat of a hurricane ?

Was that the bullshit reason for the jump ?

Had been in the $3.079-$3.099 range (with some places at $3.259) for a few weeks before jumping up this morning to $3.199.
As for the hurricane question: Pretty much yes. If you saw the gas futures this week it was going up a few cents a day. So, if a real storm or 2 actually develops in the Gulf in the next few weeks, $3.40+ will be the price of the cheap stuff in most places when August turns to September.

Filled up for $3.149 after covering a game, and as I'm filling the tank, one of the employees comes out and changes the price to $3.199. Thankfully, the lower price was the one that counted.

I can't believe the oil/gas industry is getting away with this new scam of theirs without the government stepping in and putting a stop to it.

So if hurricanes are so dangerous to the oil refineries along the coastlines, then why didn't the price of gas always shoot up at any possible threat of a hurricane for the last 50 plus years before 2005 ???

As much as I'd like to bury them for operating a scam, they aren't. The price of unleaded gas is a commodity on the New York Mercantile Exchange, as are oil, gold(and, has that been volatile the past few months. Talk about either getting rich quick or jumping off a bridge just on fluctuation), natural gas, silver, copper etc. The hurricanes in the Gulf in '04 and '05 damaged not only oil platforms, but gas refineries, thus investors are driving the price up, as they see what has happened in the past and thus attempt to use that as a guide to the future. And gas isn't like oil, whereby if there is a problem it is possible to purchase it overseas. Difficult and expensive to transport refined gasoline from overseas.
Currently the price for September Gasoline Contracts are $2.2350 a gallon (and that was after it became apparent that the Tropical Storm had fizzled before reaching the Gulf). Now, throw in the federal and state gasoline taxes, and the price is $2.70 already, before it has even been shipped. Throw in shipping costs plus the companies profit (call it 15% of what they are paying on the market for arguments sake) and that adds .33/.34 cents and puts it at around $3.05. Say the owner of the gas station would like to stay in business and adds .02 a gallon, and you are at $3.07 already.
Now, if you want to say the oil/gas companies are charging too much in the delivery phase, I won't argue with you. However, it is the marketplace that has driven the price up, and weather is a factor of the marketplace. I wish the good old days of the late 80's would return and gas would be under a buck, but, I really don't see that happening again. And, should a major hurricane hit around Houston, $3 gas will be the good old days very quick.
Or, if you want things to be real fun, just have 8% of US oil production shut down in Alaska. Fun time is going to start early this year.

What? You mean like this? That really sucks.

This is weird as I saw a Good Morning America story a week ago that said that the prices were going to go up because of that pipeline that is breaking down. They pleaded with people to not fill up all at once before the prices went up. At the time, the gas prices around me in Southern Jersey were between 2.85 and 2.90.

Right now as of this morning, the prices are between 2.70 and 2.80. I thought it was odd.

$2.92 at a Valero, and I was glad to see it.

I think I saw it at $2.88 at the gas station I used to buy booze at when I was under age an off-brand place, but I don't really like filling up there.

We are down to $2.55 this morning. Last night I saw a Shell at $2.62 and the Murphy USA at the Wal-Mart across the street was at $2.57.

There is a place here in Tulsa that knocks 3 cents off per gallon if you fill up anytime between 7pm and 7am or all day and night on Sunday. So I could get it for $2.52 if I went by there. And of course if you pay with a Wal-Mart giftcard at Murphy USA then you get 3 cents off too.
