After Stone Colds recent appearances on Sportscenter and in a commercial for SC,(anyone know when that begins to air? havent seen it on) I've noticed that as recently as Friday that some of there programs have made refferences to this Sundays Pay Per View. On one of ESPN's shows Pardon the Interuption (PTI), at the end of the show where the hosts do a segment called The big finish, they asked eachother whether Rock would beat Hogan, and whther this was a good career desicion by Hogan. Then on another original show by ESPN called Around the Horn, where one of the topics was with the return of Stone Cold this Sunday at NWO and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (I believe they said that was also Sunday) will UFC ever become as popular as WWE? The response from host Max Kellerman was very positive as was two of the 3 panelists opinions, WWE was favored 2-1 and these guys are all respected sports journalists. So my question I guess is does anyone think maybe the WWE and ESPN have some new agreement, maybe as a way to make WWE seem more Sport to balance out w/ Entertainment. I'm sure its mostly just the fact that Austin and Rocky are returnin, but I'm really diggin this mainstream attention, its good for business.
>>>> This just in as I was typin this god awful long post, the new 1-800-collect commercial w/ Steph, her boobs and that loser CarrotTop just aired twice in like 10 mins. (ok I type slow)

Part of it is I'm sure that February is a SLOW time for sports, allowing time for more "non-sports" content or non-traditional sports content on all shows, be they Sportscenter, PTI or what have you.

PTI has always had a little wrestling sprinkled in it, usually when involving a big name (Hogan, Rock, Austin).

Kellerman is a boxing guy, so his insertion of UFC/Pride into Horn isn't surprising.

People can say what they want, but I still think Steph is amazingly hot. Sure, she's put on a few and shes a big girl, but thats 5'10'' of sexiness. At least in that commercial she looked better than she has in a while.

Sorry for the off-topic post, heh.

The UFC/WWE bit on Around The Horn proved one thing to me. The reporters didn't know a damn thing about mixed martial arts.

I have a special friend. He's the baby Jesus and I love him and...and...he don't give me no s**t and he don't f**k around and he's just the f**king coolest guy and I wanna say I love the baby Jesus.I can't say enough.I love the baby Jesus and I think...he's the best thing and he's really great when he shares his love for everbody. You know what I mean?I can't even see a manger without thinkin' about him,eh?I just love the Jesus.I've only been into him for a couple of hours though, but I'm really into him.

They did however seem to know what they were talking about concerning wrestling which I was surprised about. I think maybe Around the Horn talking about wrestling was due to Kellerman being a fan. As for PTI, well The Rock (who is a movie star) wrestling Hogan (the most well known wrestler) is a pretty big deal.

Boxing people HATE UFC/MMA because they know that it makes boxers and boxing look bad. Boxing is so boring compared to MMA and one dimensional. They know if UFC/MMA really catches on in the US, it could replace Boxing as the fight sport of choice.

Furry. Thank you. I've thought this myself. I'd still do her. Everyone is supposed to whack off till they bleed to Stacy and Torrie...And while they do look good, I think there's about 5 minutes of conversation you can have with either of these women before it becomes painfully apparent they are about as intelligent as retarded Chimpanzee. Which is to say, not that unintelligent, but not nearly as intelligent as a human. I prefer the way steph looked when she was lighter though...with her straight hair...she looked better then. I honestly think she's bulking up; her face isn't much fatter it's just her arms.

Yes, but boxing is about one fifth as homoerotic as UFC. I mean, i can't sit through one of those things when a near-naked dude embraces and falls to the mat with another one and they both wince and sweat. I swear, you'd think nothing could outdo WWE in homoerotic undertones, but UFC does it and most people in the bars and grills I've been to just think its gay. That's MMA's biggest uphill battle; breaking that stigma.

Speaking as someone who is American, but whose mind is "at" being sort of smart: I think UFC shares a problem with boxing in that many people find it deadly dull. Not different, or homoerotic or foreign: just stupid and boring. It may be neither of those things, but for many people, it doesn't pass the "This is stupid/boring change the channel" test.

I have seen a few of these, like the Ken Shamrock ones and the (very) few that whatzizname that looks like Freddy Mercury was on, but other then those two guys, I found the shows to be quite boring. How many times can you watch random guys really beat the shit out of each other for no rhyme or reason and NOT get bored by it.

DAN SEVERN! That's him, they fought on UFC #8 or #9 I thinks, but anyways...

At least with a wrestling show, we get (most of the time)a reason for these people to want to fight, 'You screwed my girlfriends lifeless corpse.', 'My watch tells me to.', 'You're marrying my father and I don't approve.'; these are all valid reasons to be fighting each other.

When you just throw a bunch of bodies out there just to see 'who's best' then it gets boring rather quick and people will not want to watch if it's boring.

People are uneducated.

I watched UFC 40: Vendetta in a full sports bar. A lot of people were there watching their first MMA event, and they were loving it.

I was once like a lot of the other people posting. I got bored by the "Lay & Pray" tactics a lot of guys were using from the early UFCs, but nowadays that everyone crosstrains, that's not a factor anymore.

Plus, more UFC fights end on the people's feet with a KO nowadays than with a submission on the ground.

"I have seen a few of these, like the Ken Shamrock ones and the (very) few that whatzizname that looks like Freddy Mercury was on"

Reminds me of a quote from Dennis Knight (Mideon/Phineas Goddwinn) about his tattoo on his arm...

"It's not Dan Severn! AND IT'S NOT FREDDIE MERCURY!"
(It's Doc Holliday)

Shamrock-Severn was SEVEN YEARS AGO. The sport has evolved tremendously since then. Then, it was just throw two guys in see if Karate can beat Amateur Wrestling. Now they're all finely tuned athletes that put on exciting world class fights.

They've started adopting more of a pro wrestling mindset when building up matches like the return of the legend Ken Shamrock against Tito Ortiz in November. Old school versus new school and Ken got humiliated.

It's much different now, new owners, new brain trust, new fighters, everything. The production of their last show smoked WWE's production values. I suggest if you check out a recent UFC tape, you'll be very surprised at what the sport has evolved into.

My problem with MMA is that almost every time I watch, at least one match ends up going 20 minutes with one guy just laying on top of the other guy. Uh... It's not the homoerotic element that bothers me, it's the fact that that's NOT INTERESTING. At all. In fact, wasn't it one of the Gracies (Royce?) that was famous for just doing that move?

Homoerotcism aside...And that can't hurt my enjoyment of certain things, but let's put that aside for a minute. I've seen it recently, and am aware of the evolution of MMA.

But it's not entertaining to me at all. The last boxing match I enjoyed was Tyson/Lewis, and that was only fun because of the hype and the energy. UFC fights lack that energy because in the end it's not considered a real sport, it's ignored, and it doesn't feel like anything's at stake in any of these matches. Do you think winning the UFC title will get you on Leno or a sit-down with Barbara Walters? Hell no. This sport is fucking invisible. People like to watch something and feel they are a part of something huge. That's why some people go halfway around the globe for Wrestlemania and not for Unforgiven.

I'm not saying MMA will never be accepted but it's got a long way to go.

It's a freak sport, like skateboarding or the X Games in general. No one cares about it, in fact it's probably lower on the mainstream sports press' radar that even pro wrestling. Once again this board is full of people who consider anyone who differs with their opinion to be uneducated or worthy of their pity.

The "stupidity of the average American"? I'm Canadian too. And finding large sweaty neartly naked men in exhausting contortions does not make me stupid. I just have a different opinion.

I hate wife-beaters. You don't. That doesn't make you stupid, Fuel. It just means you have a different opinion than I. Please...Please come off your high horse.

My head is not "at" homophobia. But I don't enjoy watching things that are overly homoerotic. Men rolling around sweatily, for whatever manly reason they might; is still homoerotic. Now if it was entertaining AND homoerotic, like, say; pro wrestling...Then I'd have no problem. But if it's boring and homoerotic I'm just watching for the homoeroticism. If the homoeroticism of it isn't the reason for my lack of enjoyment, then I don't see myself as being overly immature.

That doesn't mean I am any less intelligent than anyone who loves MMA. And like it if you will...but at least admit it's homoerotic. I can admit pro wrestling is homoerotic and I love it above anything else. Most people who don't know MMA say it's gay. I've seen it every time I've watched it in public. That doesn't mean, because you enjoy it that A- it's not homoerotic and B- that people who find it to be that way are stupid.

And if "smoking" someone production values is essentially ripping them off, then yeah, they smoked WWE. But MMA has a totally pro wrestling presentation these days.

I'm thinking I've got a slightly different definition of homoerotic. When I watch UFC, I see two nearly naked dudes trying to beat each other into submission. What's so gay about that?

I don't know, to me, it's all about the intent of said sweaty naked dudes. Y'see, the intent is very different in, say, gay porn.

Anyway, I don't find MMA boring, but I find boxing fucking dull as hell. I cannot sit through a second of it, no matter how much of an effort I used to put in. I dig submission moves, I dig martial arts, I don't dig two guys who just throw a bunch of punches, and barely move around. I just don't get the appeal.

You misinterpreted what I meant by the stupidity of the average American. I wasn't talking about you or calling you stupid. I meant it that UFC is much more complex then two guys punching each other for 12 rounds. It's one of the reasons hockey hasn't really caught on in the US, because you gotta pay attention.

There's a reason why NASCAR is so huge in the US. Cars going around in an oval, that's huge. For whatever reason, American culture doesn't like to have to think too much. To appreciate and understand Mixed Martial Arts, you gotta pay attention to it. Moreso then watching a bunch of cars drive in a circle or two guys punch each other. That's what I meant by overcoming stupidity.

UFC 40 did a tremendoous gate and apparently did a lot of PPV buys. Their TV special on FOX Sports Net scored a really good rating. They're a small niche sport right now because of their past reputation as a bloodsport. They're slowly but surely gaining mainstream acceptance and getting closer to landing a TV deal.

Maybe one day UFC will be as big in the US as K-1 and PRIDE are in Japan, where they regularly draw crowds of 60,000+.

As for the homoerotic aspect, I just don't find two guys trying to out smart and out fight each other to be gay. I didn't find Tito turning Ken Shamrock's face into hamburger meat gay.

Okay. I get you, Feul. If you look at what you wrote man, I don't think you can honestly say I was being totally oversensitive in assuming you were calling me stupid.

You put: "If that's where your mind is at and where it goes then I feel sorry for you. What MMA will have to overcome is the stupidity of the average American."

I mean, really. The thought you weren't talking about me never occurred to me. A lot of people would have assumed you meant that.

As for the hamburger meat stuff...Well, fine. That's not "gay". Guys who are outsmarting and outfighting are not "gay". But a lot of that outsmarting involves contortions, like maybe a body-scissors...from behind, while applying some full-nelson type thing. And that looks gay to me. Let's not over heterosexualize MMA. Or pro wrestling. I enjoy a little MMA too. But I'll tell you, in boxing's prime I found it more entertaining than MMA today. I've seen Ali/Frazier...And it kicks the shit out of Ortiz/Shamrock. Any classic boxing matches don't come off as "boring or simple"

but then, lol...that's just my opinion.

Boxing is a whole lot more complex than just two guys punching each other for twelve rounds. You sound just as ignorant as as everyone you're complaing about who "just don't get UFC." Two idiots punching each other is that Toughman garbage on FX; there's a lot of subtle skill in boxing if you know what to look for.

Then explain why football and baseball are so popular. Hockey isn't popular in America because most American kids play football, baseball, and basketball. Where the kids play hockey (Detroit, Boston, New York, Philly, Minnesota), it's popular.
