| #2 Posted on 29.3.02 2302.43 | Instant Rating: 4.06 | The Dropkicked died when flashier moves came around. Why dropkick when you can do a spinning heel kick? Just looks more impressive (unless the guy busts out one of those dropkicks with the flip at the end, which it kick ass.)
The only dropkicks I see get used nowadays are the missle dropkick and the dropkick to the knee (which is a really spiffy move, IMO) And sometimes a drop kick to the face while the person is kneeling (Tajiri, variation is when Taka dropkicks while Funaki puts the guy in the crab.) But I think the time of the plain standing drop kick has passed us by.

I totally agree, Moe. I can't put my finger on it, but it seems like even just two years ago people were throwing dropkicks a lot. I especially have noticed the absence of Jericho's springboard dropkick to the outside. Speaking of Jericho, where did his double-powerbomb go? As a side note, it also seems like ages since I've seen someone put through a table. It happened constantly throughout 2000, didn't it? | Pheadfred

I don't think I've ever seen anyone execute the missle dropkick , or a regular dropkick for that matter , better than Maven , although Grand Master comes awfully close .

I agree, the decline of the dropkick is probably due to the increased variety of aerial moves. The dropkick is the side headlock of aerial maneuvers.

| #10 Posted on 30.3.02 0906.17 | As a Hardcore Holly mark I just want to say thank you's to all those people remembering the man with the best damn dropkick in this business. Although, for awhile, there were some upstarts to that title (who might have even held it for awhile, because dammit their dropkicks were just plain awesome!). Storm and Gunn. Gunn and Storm both get more height than Holly, if that's possible. Storm's vertical is amazing and Gunn is just a big hulk who can sometimes execute a move like a killer flipping dropkick and make it seem that much more impressive when overcoming his lanky ass build. For awhile there JR even talked about dropkick contests between Storm, Holly and Gunn in the ol' Ross reports and how each was trying to outdo the other in height and flpping it out at the last possible minute. And remember, "If you don't weigh four hundred pounds you ai't no damn superheavyweight! Oh, and Coach, I think you're FAT!"

Hardcore Holly's dropkick is the one thing keeping me from changing the channel whenever he's on. The guy's boring and has about as much flavor as saltines with a glass of water, but the dropkick is just MINT!

Last week on The Golden Age of Wrestling on ESPN Classic, they finally showed a match with Argentina Rocca, a guy that my Dad's been telling me about for years.
He lead into his finisher with a quadruple drop-kick, then won the match with a backbreaker submission.
As for Rocca's performance, he wrestled barefoot, did lots of acrobatic moves and kicked his opponent in the face a lot (mainly little jab-like slap kicks). He also busted out an Ed Grimly dance move, did a cartwheel standing in one spot, and reminded me of a grounded RVD.
Except that he looked like a young Vic Tayback.
