I dont think the UN has anything anymore. We are proving that by our actions now. I think Bush gave the UN a big fat middle finger. Just want some opinons and as healthy as possible discussion on your views of the UN as it is today. Powerless....

The UN has the same powers that it has always had.

What it lacks these days is credibility and authority. It is not too late to salvage either/both though.

I don't think that they'll be willing to make the changes necessary to remain a vital/useful institution however.

And the will. The UN was "supposed" to keep the peace. It doesn't even have the will to do so. Think Japan invading Manchuria in 1931 and Italy invading Ethiopia in 1936.

The UN is an association of member states, if and when the members are interested in doing something, it serves a purpose. If the member states are not interested, those with veto wielding status, then nothing happens.

It's not the end of the UN, not yet anyway.

Uh...wasn't that Woodrow Wilson's beloved uber-inept League of Nations? I thought the UN wasn't formed until after World War II.

It's not the end of the UN until the US pulls out completely. Truman made an end run around them when he started the Korean War and it didn't do any lasting damage. In other words, this isn't anything unusual, and if it's worked right it'll allow the UN to keep face (after all, the US is ostensibly going into Iraq to enforce THEIR resolution)

. . .depending on how the war goes at any rate.

The UN still has its uses. It will be vital in the rebuilding of Iraq as the UK and US are expected to seek its approval to install a post war interim government. This will be critical in respect to persuade the EU and other financial institutions to contribute in the rebuilding process.

well, the UN has no "powers" at all. they can recommend or give it's blessing on some actions, but they have NO SOVERGINITY OVER ANY OTHER NATIONS...

any first year government student can tell you that it is a confederation of soverign states and has no real power...all they can do is pressure nations not to trade with them and shake their finger VERY HARD at iraq, but thats about it...

To this point, last night a talk radio host, sports no less, gave his stat of the day. Since the UN formed it has approved 2 conflics(wars) between member nations (Korea and Gulf War 1) out of 291(This is from memeory this number may be wrong but Im pretty sure thats what they gave). So this isn't the first nor will it be the last that Member nations go against one another. And all the UN will be able to do is say "stop that or we'll pass a resolution".

if "Washington is a Hollywood for ugly people," then, considering the remarks coming out of Tinseltown about Iraq, "Hollywood is a Washington for the simpleminded."

This is the important part of the exchange, and it's reported a little bit different in each article. I agree that it is hard to tell without video what exactly happened.
