Believabiliy is a key factor in any good storyline. Take the Foley/HHH feud from early 2000, for example. The WWF did such an excellent job of building up Cactus Jack as some sort of mythical beast, and Triple H reacted so well to the 'transformation' from Mankind into Cactus, that the fans believed that Cactus Jack would succeed where Mankind failed in beating the tar out of Triple H, and they wanted to see it happen and were willing to pay good money to see it happen.
Another good aspect is surprise, as evidenced by the buildup to the No Way Out rematch between Cactus and Helmsley. You had the debut and subsequent turn of the Radicalz on Foley, the announcement of the Hell in a Cell stipulation, and the retirement stipulation.
There needs to be a definite pay-off to the feud, too. Which is why the Hell in a Cell match was so beautifully done. Triple H has to damn near kill Cactus Jack to win, and even then, Cactus lived to take his final curtain call.

The story worked so well, that they decided to add it into the Wrestlemania main event to create a backstory to the HHH/Rock focus, with the temporary Rock & Sock reunion, and Triple H having to Pedigree Mick twice for the win.

I'll see all of that and raise you a wo0t. I have a lot more I want to say about everyone's answers, but I'll wait until I have time to properly respond.

I remember Trips' (and my) reaction to Cactus Jack -- one enormous 'Holy. Fucking. Shit.'

Ach, Vinnie & Linnie, this is what we want more of.

The common thread here is "entertaining". Everyone's putting down what makes it entertaining, or what they want to see in their perfect angle, but it all comes down to making it enjoyable to watch for the largest amount of people. Something can be totally unbelievable (90's Undertaker), but if people have fun watching it and what they do with it, they'll forgive all that. It can have the worst workers in the world (nWo) but if it's entertaining nobody will care. Everything that's been listed so far is just people's personal preferences.

As stupid as they were to choose the word "entertainment" for the new company name, there was a very good reason why they chose it.

The best storylines throughout wrestling history have involved feuding play-by-play announcers.

WHAT?

Okay, okay, here's my thoughts:

The best ones are always simple. Look at the premise behind Stone Cold and Vince McMahon, which I'm guessing has to be the biggest moneymaking story ever, if not in the top five, however that's judged. It was simple, and something anyone could relate to. Blue-collar worker rebels against evil dictator-ish boss. The more the worker rebelled, the more successful he became. Which prompted the evil boss to become more and more evil.

The afforementioned Hogan vs Orndorff and the initial wave of the new World order were also great examples of that. Simple stories that people can relate to, sell well. Angles that change on an almost-weekly basis and are full of unreasonable holes (eg is Kane scarred or not? Why hasn't he been arrested if he's such a monster? Plus that whole escaping from the fire thing) won't work, most of the time.

An interview WHAT? I said, an interview WHAT? A conversation WHAT? A chat WHAT? DialogueWHAT? Exclusive interview with Stoned Cold in the latest Inside The Ropes

WHAT?

The invasion angle completely lost hope once they paired Steph with the ECW crew. Why oh why did she have to get involved in wrestling at all? And why do people even try to like her? She's had nothing of value to contribute. Lots of people mention how the ECW alliance coming together was an amazing moment, but don't mention how terribly botched it immediately became. It had potential for greatness. When Steph was brought out and introduced as the leader of the ECfuckingW I knew it was the beginning of the end.

Surely enough, we haven't recovered much since that summer.

Incidentally, Liz, to give somewhat of an answer to your question about the HHHate, I think it would become hard for fans to trust any wrestler who's sleeping with -that- boss's daughter while simultaneously having an endless run with the belt.

Totally untrue and uncalled for. She had a minor-at-best role to play in the entire storyline, she didn't wrestle in any major matches for it's duration, and Shane was ALWAYS viewed as the leader of the Alliance. If you think her efforts to get on Chris jericho's nerves were THAT damaging to the Ailliance story as a whole, then you're ignoring some pretty damn massive flaws elsewhere.

No.

Stephanie not wrestling in any of the matches had nothing to do with it. When the Alliance was born, they never really came out and established a leader- but just remember who got the main event spot that night to close the show. When the Alliance *did* have a leader, it was never even CLOSE to being Shane Mcmahon, because that leader's name was Stone Cold Steve Austin And He Doesn't Deserve To be Treated Like This.

I also still don't buy the whole "WWF fans had no idea who the WCW guys were" argument. It sure sounded to me like 20,000 people knew exactly who the fuck Diamond Dallas Page was when he took off his black ski mask... and then cut one of the worst promos ever. Fans aren't all idiots and they aren't all fed-exclusive. Just because smarks exist and live to watch all the wrestling they can find (just to bitch about it), it doesn't mean Joe Blow can't figure out how to use his remote to switch back and forth to Nitro or how to set a VCR. Hell, if you want to make a case for loyal fans, look at ratings from Raw and Nitro back then. If anybody was doing anything, it was WCW fans who didn't WANT what a WWF-only world had to offer. That's why they disappeared and a bunch of the Alliance guys are still on the roster.

While I disagreed above with OSH on the Stephanie thing, I think he hit the nail completely on the head with the point about how making the Alliance into one big block of heels basically killed the whole thing. There was a whole ONE bit of dissent in that mess, with Kidman basically forced into being a face since X-Pac was the only true heel left on the WWF side.

Lashley has been a good champ, but he doesn't seem to be into it anymore. He should be doing more MMA fights and leave the silly wrestling alone.
