I have been trading tapes with a friend of MLW and out of curiosity I went to their website and read that the show was now...

"Hosted by the voice of MLW, Kevin Kelly"

Does anyone know what happened with Styles?

Thanks for any responses in advance!

I don't know for sure, but I would guess that it's a cost-saving measure. They're changing their business model in order to start making, you know, a profit, so I figure that they think Styles is a guy that can be cut.

What I want to know is, why the hell can't I find it anymore on the Sunshine Network?

here's what was reported on 411mania.com about it:

All TV tapings, they'll start on 1/9 in Philly at the National Guard Armory with Low Ki vs. Homicide, Vampiro, Mike Modest, Ted Hart, Chris Daniels, American ragon, CM Punk and more, 1/10 in Elizabeth, NJ at the RexPlex with Steve Corino vs. Terry Funk in an I Quit match, 2/13 in Philly, and 2/14 and 3/12 in Elizabeth. Apparently, focus is shifting to the Northeastern US as the fed will not be back on the Sunshine Network but will return on Philly's Channel 48 in late-December with a Monday midnight slot.

-Kevin Kelly will replace Joey Styles as the fed's 'face.'

As if they needed more wrestling in that region. Don't mind me, i'm just a bitter west coaster jealous of the lack of attention to the SoCal indy scene (alot of good talent, just not enough fans). hah.

I haven't heard anything else on Joey Styles.

It would be nice to get MLW on TV out here in Canada, mind you.

I was hoping to have some light shed on this issue as they were all set to have their next T.V. taping here in town and my friends and I had our front row tickets already bought. Unfortunately for us, 3 days before the event MLW seemingly blipped out of existence.
I assumed it had something to do with money and/or the lack of it.

IIRC, wasn't MLW based out of the Philly area before moving to Florida?

It's a Catch 22 - it's hard to get attention without TV, but TV isn't interested because they don't think there's enough attention. The only option is a huge outlay of cash to get some TV clearance, but nobody yet has found a way to make enough money to recoup the investment. (Well, okay, except Vince)

They ran out of shows. Paying FOX to air reruns is even more prohibitively expensive than usual, given the potential return on investment - by which I mean "zero"

I doubt MLW can afford THAT! (Alternate response: steal DirecTV, I hear all the Canadians are doing it - assuming they come back i 2004)

Although they had their first shows at the Madhouse of Extreme (I think), their money mark - I mean, booker - Court Bauer is a Florida guy. (Again, I think - somebody jump in here and correct me, please)

If Styles is gone, it's possible that a lot of the ex-ECW production team might be out of work as well. I'm sure Meltzer will bring us up to date if there's still a promotion to talk about in a few months...especially if there's a media-friendly guy like Kevin Kelly now working with the company.

But wasn't MLW based here in Florida? Surely for them to just up and leave would be more costly than running reruns on Sunshine Network, and like you said, Court Bauer is a Florida guy, so why would he want to conduct operations outside of his home state, when there is a HUGE wrestling fanbase here.

I never really liked ECW, so when I heard about Joey Styles (and possibly, the shitty production crew) being given the 'ol heave ho, I was pretty happy... that is, when I found out MLW wouldn't be shown on Sunshine anymore

But let me ask you this, do you know if and when MLW will be back on Sunshine Network, because I looked at the MLW TV listings, and they're only being shown on 3 local channels up in the northeast area. Thats not gonna bring in a lot of fanfare. Lets just hope they get their heads out of their asses, and gets their TV situation fixed

Again, I think they'll be back on Sunshine Network in 2004 provided they actually have (1) shows to promote and (2) material to air. Having said that, they're currently not on the three month schedule at http://www.sunshinenetwork.com/program_schedule.jsp although that certainly could change.

According to the Meltz, they are not returning to the Sunshine Network. I also was wondering why they got rid of Joey Styles, but I know I remember reading somewhere that MLW was trying to distance themselves from seeming like a just an ECW-copy and going with their original hybrid style theory instead of being billed as just hardcore. My thought was maybe they got rid of Styles to again not look so much like ECW. Interesting move to the NE, though I believe their original business offices were based out of NY and DC? I could be wrong about that, but I thought I remembered reading that on their site. With them going up into ROH's territory and using a lot of the same talent, is this a benefit for both feds or could this hurt ROH? Any thoughts?

Well my thoughts is that this is a HUGE mistake by MLW to abandon their Florida audience and homebase. It kind of reminds me of the University of Miami's move to join the ACC, I mean whats the point? It doesn't help them in any way, and all it does is hurt the Big East. Same with MLW, by moving into ROH's territory, they're not doing themselves any favors, and will only hurt business in the long run. Florida has been a hot wrestling bed ever since the days of Dusty Rhodes and Florida Championship Wrestling. For MLW to do this, and pretend like nothing happened is nothing short of idiotic

The Jacksonville show was going to be huge with many big names including Terry Funk and Barry Windham (don't laugh, he cut the best promo in MLW's last 3 months). But 3 days before the show, the advance sales were about 250 and Court Bauer saw the writing on the wall and cancelled the show. Funk makes $2,500.00 a shot and with only 250 tickets sold ($10-$25 range) the were barely covering his cost alone, forget about rent, security, the airfares and the other wrestler's appearance fees. Even though the promotion was "Florida based", they flew in virtually all of their talent and were not making a cent. According to Meltzer, they even flew the ref and ring announcer in from the Northeast. The Jax show would have given them at least 4 weeks of tv, but without it there was no product for the Sunshine Network. It makes sense to run in the Northeast due to the availibility of their crew locally. The product was simply not that good, pretty much ECW without the angles.

You have a point, but why 86 the whole thing, just because of poor ticket sales to one show? I always thought they did reasonably well in Tampa, Orlando, and Ft. Lauderdale. Jacksonville has always kind of been sort of a ho-hum city anyway, so it doesn't really suprise me that ticket sales to that particular show weren't as what they would have liked for them to have been. Still, with that said, I still think they could have worked something out to where they could have stayed in Florida. And as far as it being ECW without the angles, I agree with you there, but at least they seemed to be trying to distance themselves from that comparison. They seemed to be taking a step in the right direction by firing Joey Stiles, and changing their look so it didn't look SO much quite like ECW. ECW (at least after Raven left) was a really shitty product, and it sucks that right after MLW changes their business model, they pull the plug on all of us here in Florida

Hmmm...at least I know what happened, now. I just noticed that the show had vanished one evening and couldn't find it anywhere. I would've payed more attention if I hadn't gotten into watching Joe Schmo on Monday nights.

I went to both MLW shows in Orlando and I thought they did a lot with what they had to work with. They were the first (and still only) live shows I had seen outside of the WWF(E) and WCW. The place was small, but it was pretty full both times. It was good enought that MLW came back to Tabu a second time.

I've gotten the impression that wrestling shows in Orlando do well on attendance. The only reason I can see that would justify that MLW would do their shows out of Florida when they weren't based here is that they were counting on that to offset their costs. Florida has always been a fertile ground for wrestling promotions. There are many loyal fans here, especially among natives like myself.

(At the risk of going off topic, I'm surprised that WWE waited so long to have a PPV here, and doesn't come here more often. I think a significant portion of their talent lives here as well, reducing that problem.)

I would argue that ticket sales were low for our Jacksonville show mostly due to the card being downright awful, and not so much the fact that we are a "Ho-Hum" town. Don't get me wrong, I was still excited to be supporting ANOTHER wrestling federation and knowing I'd be on TV was a definite plus, but to try and sugar coat that booking is silly. When the biggest match on the card features Terry Funk in a dog collar match, you know there are some problems with your Fed. I don't believe Super Porky helped matters either, but I digress...
