Answers.com didn't have anything, so I was wondering what people on here do. I tipped $3 on a $12 haircut, which is more than 20%, but it didn't feel like it was enough. Does percent of the bill apply or not apply like it does in restaurants?
20% seems to be acceptable. Was it just a simple wash and cut, or was it more complicated? If it seemed like it took a while, or you think it was an exceptional cut/service, tip a little more.
Three bucks for my seven buck haircut. I always pay with a 10 and feel weird asking for change on a seven dollar haircut.
Plus it's sit down, don't talk, get your hair cut and get out of here. The perfect experience for me. Kinda like the "Soup Nazi" in a way. All of that happens because of fear. Don't even go in there not sure how you want your hair done.

I usually just round up. When she charged $12, I gave her $15. She's raised her price to $15, so I just give her a $20.
I asked this question of a student of mine who used to cut hair for a living. He worked in a relatively high end place, and he said tips were all over the place. But, he said a decent rule of thumb is to tip like you would a waiter/waitress.
I usually go $2 or $3 for a $12-15 tip. I've heard of friends who give somewhere between 5 and 10 dollar tips but they go to pretty expansive salons where they sometimes pay as much as 50 or 60 for the haircut. I'll never get that; why pay 3 or 4 times as much for the same kind of cut you would get at a regular barber shop?

This is what I do. I live in a small town with a family-owned barber shop straight out of the '40s, and I tip for the atmosphere as much as the service.

Tipping for haircuts? Crikey! Then again, I can barely remember the last time a haircut cost me less than $20. Barber today, #1 and thin and trim the top = $25.

Fair enough. Just don't get mad when 'dinner' consists of using the Entertainment coupon for buying one Big Mac, getting one free. The economy still hasn't recovered enough for me to justify spending more than a Hamilton bill ($10) for my meals.
Yep, 20% as in 3 dollars on my 15 dollar haircuts at The Hair Cuttery (STILL ONLY 15 DOLLARS). I don't do more because it really is pretty easy to do a "#3 on the sides, blend in, squared at the back, and some off the top" haircut.

I go to the salon on the corner every couple months and get my whole head #3 clippered (aka The "Renton" cut). It used to be $8 and I tipped $2 ($3 near Christmas). They recently upped it to $10, so I tip $3. I figure a 25-30% tip is fair for what amounts to a pretty easy and quick cut.

As someone who bought a barber clipper with all the attachments (I like a #1 on the back and sides), why not just buy a decent barber clipper and do it yourselves?

$50 for cut, plus $60 for colour, plus 20% tip ==> $135 every 6 weeks
(And 6 weeks is pushing it for roots growing out.)
And that's not an outrageously high-end price -- that's pretty much just going rate.

Why don't you just dye it yourself and cut your costs by half? You can get professional-quality hair dye from any beauty supply company. I know it's not quite as good as a job done by professionals, but honestly most people won't be able to tell the difference.
Edit: Forgot to answer the question. $3 on a $17 cut, for a nice, even $20 total.
