Happy New Year! Seeing as how the 2008 thread revisited us, here's a good place to lay down your plans, hopes and dreams for the next 12 months.

My list is fairly simple:

-keep and succeed at my job
-travel to someplace I haven't been to before
-finish a triathlon. Not an Ironman, just a small one where I'm able to swim/bike/run a short distance.

There's no movies or events that I can think of that are really things to anticipate.

Happy 2009!

For events, happenings and what not;
- february 2009 I'll once again be going to New York for a week and a half. Shop, party and watch the New York Rangers play.

- April will be Wrestlemania time.
After that we will stay for a while at a friend's in New Jersey to have fun, including more hockey.

This year I swear I will do more stuff to put on my resume.
So I am looking forward to that and have it lead up to a better job or else promotion within the company.

And who knows. I might actually get more serious about finding (and keeping) someone to share my life with.

-A much more boring year than 2008 (in 2008 my wife died, my uncle died, and I moved.)

- The next Harry Potter movie

- Continued normal gas prices (under $2/gal)

- Better eating habits, resulting in weight loss (HA HA HA HA! I'll just laugh that one off right now)

Frankly, I'll be happy just to get through 2009 under the radar...

- Getting back into skiing this winter after 7 years off
- Buying an apartment or condo in Cambridge, MA
- Honeymoon, which we deferred to next summer so that we could go on the trip of a lifetime. We'll be traveling through Nova Scotia, Greenland, Iceland, Scotland, and Holland.

Harry: That's a special feeling.

-Losing weight. I have cut candy and other sweets besides regular sugar in the occasional coffee starting today. I am also going to drink a lot more water and use the gym regularly at work. I hope saying this in public places (or forums) will motivate me to do it.

-Reading 20 books. This was my goal last year and I read 23. I got 10 new ones for Christmas to start with.

-My next tattoo, maybe in the late spring or summer.

-The next season of Lost and Heroes

The year 2008 was a good and bad year.

In 2009, however, I want to return to the glory that was the beginning of 2008. At this time in 2008, I had a job that paid well, and I had my own apartment Edmonton, and I had a great group of friends. However, in a moment of weakness, I gave it all up to return to Toronto to be closer to family. It's been an exceptionally difficult, and I've found that I can't get a job in my usual job field, let alone anything else because there is, either (a) not enough jobs, or (b) too many people applying for them.

So, in 2009: I want to move back West. Edmonton or Saskatoon, I don't care. I hate Toronto. I hate Hamilton. I hate Ontario.

Outside of that, the year is a blank canvas.

• Dropping 15 to 20 pounds and exercising regularly (which I've already started)

• Playing racquetball twice a week

• Our trip to NYC in February

• Writing an iPhone app and a Wordpress plugin

• Baseball season

• My better-half landing a tenure track position at a university

• And, hopefully, a return visit to Oaxaca

- Getting a permanent job, preferably with health benefits.
- The wife and I finding our own place.
- Landing a PS3 for cheap.
- Visiting my home town.
- The Habs winning a Cup (hopefully).

Maybe some other stuff too, can't think of any right now.

Mine's pretty simple for 2009

Enhance my job importance - we had layoffs and I want to be on the list that doesn't go. At least for 10 more years or so.

Keep my family going - two parents in law in nursing homes, a brother I thought was gay for 25 years getting married to a woman, two kids in college, a wife going through menopause. I anticipate stress.

Seeing our church start its new building. It's been awhile coming

in entertainment - I am looking forward to the Star Trek movie, Vince Flynn's next book and WEB Griffin's next books. Plus, I am hoping to get a blu-ray player this year.

We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.

Menopause + wife = fun. I speak from experience. Stress cannot begin to describe the possibilities.

And AWA, ditto the job thing for me.

  • Read my bible more
  • Learn to cook real meals, and do it more often
  • Do "it" more often
  • Play basketball (semi-)regularly again
  • Get a new job, preferably in a new industry

I made a New Year's Resolution about 10 years ago: To make no more New Year's Resolutions. BUT....

I stepped on my bathroom scale this morning and a fist came up and punched me in the groin and said "Don't ever do that again!".

The popular, boring resolution to lose weight has reared its ugly head.

Watchmen and LOST. That and my long-delayed promotion to store manager finally seeing the light of day. That's about it.

    • Seeing our now 6 month old Australian Shepherd puppy finally calming down a little and learning some really cool tricks.

    • Seeing my wife's family cottage once the renovations are finished.

    • Seeing the aforementioned dog at the aforementioned cottage for the first time.

    • Watching the world respond to the various crises that we're facing in ways that will restore my faith in humanity (there's always hope, isn't there?)

And as exciting as all those will be, come July-ish I'll be a father for the first time, which is overwhelmingly cool in the most terrifying way possible.

Or this guy and his wife can acknowledge that Mother's day is simply a Hallmark holiday, whereas his sister's graduation is an actual personal accomplishment worth celebrating.
