Great offense vs. great defense. Who shall prevail and represent the West in the NBA Finals?

Lineup time:

Suns-Spurs
PG: Nash-Parker
SG: Jackson/Johnson-Ginobili/Barry
SF: Richardson-Bowen
PF: Marion-Duncan
C: Stoudemire-Mohammed

Not sure who to pick in this one. I think this one is gonna go 7.

Game 1: Spurs 121, Suns 114

OK, just two reactions:

1) The Spurs' bench was the difference.
2) Phoenix better learn how to play some defense quick.

The one thing that will either stop Phoenix winning or help them get over the line: Q Rich.
If he plays decent, they win.
If he stinks - see game 1 and many times this season - they lose.

Is it safe to say that the Suns might be in a bit of trouble? The Spurs' bench and the Suns' lack of defense is showing through there. It really seems like RoboTim and friends are exposing the Suns as those Mavericks teams of recent memory.

2-0 going back to San Antonio. Not good.

I'll go by Simmons theory of "The team with the best player usually wins" in a playoff series. Phoenix does have some great players but the best player in that series is Duncan.

Well, unless Phoenix can pull a 2004 Red Sox, they're done and San Antonio will be representing the West in the Finals.

It's amazing how the Spurs have the innate ability to expose teams. Hopefully Phoenix can take at least 1.

Suns are done...the way they talked after the game just showed the huge amount of defeat. If they do show up Monday night, I will be surprised. Spurs sweep regardless.

They did show up and finally got a bit physical in the 4th quarter. I wouldn't be surprised to see them make the series a bit more interesting by winning in Phoenix Wednesday, but taking game 6 may be a bit much...

The Spurs win the West Title, dispatching the Suns in 5 and they'll have a lengthy rest while Miami and Detroit kill each other.

Defense wins championships. Having an awesome bench helps in that, too.

Wow, I daresay the talk of a Suns championship (and the notion that a team that doesn't play defense can win the title) was somewhat premature, eh?

At halftime last night Tim Legler compared Steve Nash to Wayne Gretzky - huh ? Sure they are both slightly built canadians who like to pass but I think Nash has a long way to go before he should even be mentioned in the same breath as the Great One.

Spurs didn't pull a Yankees and put the Suns away - tough to pick against them in the finals. I think they take the Pistons or the Heat in 6.

Well, I finally saw the Gretzky comparison after the game, because now like Gretzky, Nash is done playing (until next year).

Glad the Spurs ended the series in 5, despite a first half in which the referees were awful. But the best of all, is not having to listen to Bill Walton or Hubie Brown continuously on the dick of Amare, Nash, and Joe Johnson. I don't know what will happen in the Finals, but think the Spurs will get it done, and if they play the Heat, they already have the formula for success, let the big guy in the middle and the guard do all the scoring, and shut down everyone else.

Don't get that one... Gretzky's retired. I don't expect him to play next year.

In terms of the comparison, Nash needs to put the numbers up for another 10 years first. One MVP year does not put you in the The Great One's class....

Oh well...so much for the Suns. I guess I'll put the final nail in my season's coffin.

I picked and bet on the Suns before the season started to do the trick - the thread lampooning me for that is around here somewhere, I'm sure . As soon as they picked up Nash - that was it for me. Amare Stoudemire and a creepy looking maniac to bring SCORING - OFFENSE back to league that bought into Detroit's brand of boredom basketball - it's "what it takes" to win the Championship. Not to knock the Detroit's success, but Christ - only fans of the team would get off on that style of basketball. BORING. I wanted a team without drama that would come in and put up 110 a game and say "Fuck You". So that left out the Mavs, Sonics, Kings and all of the East. Yep - PHX with Nash running the show. And they beat most everyone they played until this series...

The Spurs played great. Even with two championships and a solid O and D, you never know when they are going to play like drunks. I think it probably would have been a different series if Joe Johnson hadn't have crushed his face and been out the first two games, but these things happen. Even in the last game, PHX, with not too much to lose, played a timid game until the last quarter

The 4th quarter of that game was amazing to watch, and probably the last good (or what I call good) basketball I'll see this year. It ended when Duncan (who played incredible) getting the inbound and fighting for the tip-in, with what should have been a gimme 24 second violation. And then PHX STROLLS up the fucking court with the ball, like they are the Knicks, instead of shoving it down their throats. I yelled, as I knew the game was over from there. All season, the other team would score and before they knew it, PHX has the ball up court, in the basket - The Suns didn't play that way in this series (except in spurts - like Game 4 and the first 10 minutes of the 4th in Game 5) and it killed them.

The Spurs won and not because of their defense. PHX didn't score enough. That makes about as much sense to me as the mantra "it takes good defense to win...blah blah blah". If SA plays O like they did against the Suns, no one can beat them. They just didn't miss shots. Yeah, it's not as easy to make a 12ft jumper with a hand in your face - but lately I've seen just as many "wide open" jumpers brick as I do "well guarded". Detroit is all over Wade, but he's on fire. The PHX style of D was to kick Duncan in the nuts and he murdered them. Take your pick I guess

From here - I don't really know. I took the Heat from the East this year, but that might fall apart as Wade is hurt and people are talking seriously about Miami tanking Game 6 to get Game 7 at Home with Wade closer to 100%. If that happens, I'll rip my eyes out before I watch that game - Detroit's idea of a Game 7 in a situation like that would be total lockdown, with a score comparable to High School JV. At this point, I hope it happens - I think SA vs. Pistons would be interesting on a certain level. Not all that good, but watchable, I guess. I've seen SA slap Shaq around enough - I would rather tune in to see Larry Brown go apeshit and cry the blues.

Oh yeah! How about Good Ol' Larry? At least you Pistons fans got a ring out of his nonsense. I had to put up with his act for years in Philly, until he left town like a thief in the night. I wish nothing but the professional worst on him - right now he is blaming US (and the media) for him being an asshole. Like always. If any of you Pistons fans have learned to hate him yet...well - look at it this way. He's going to the Cavs, which will allow Phil Jackson to come to town. Within two years, he'll drive Lebron out of Cleveland...to the Pistons. And more Championships for YOU. That prick let Iverson kill himself for years, saying "I know how to handle AI". Meanwhile, Iverson never left Philly because his "lifestyle" would get him put away for life anywhere else but on his home turf. Brown knew that. But that's another story...Brown is at the top of my "worst" list and it galls me that anyone has one iota of respect for him as a Coach or a human being

Anyway, so much for the Suns. Why they didn't play the "Cotton Fitzsimmons" card when they were down and out is beyond me. WIN IT FOR COTTON! Maybe his dying of lung cancer would have looked bad for a team that never quit running. Until the end. Irony. Good luck as a fan to anyone's team still in it

It's one thing to hear about it, but now to know for sure that deals are actively being pursued is another. One thing for sure, though, the Mavs don't want Kobe. ESPN - Cuban:
