USA loses to Poland 3-1, but South Korea beats Portugal 1-0. We've made it to round two!

I think we threw the game because now we get Mexico instead of Italy. Mexico may be playing well but we know them and can use that knowledge to our advantage.

TWO asian teams, and TWO CONCACAF teams advance

and in group D, BOTH european teams are knocked out...

what an odd and exciting World Cup

It's great isn't it? With everyone (at least here) claiming that Brazil are a shoo-in, someone needs to point out that they have a weak ass defence and if Costa Rica can get two past them then it's not such a foregone conclusion at all. For the first time in decades we might actually see a "lesser" team make it as the whole field is still wide open and that realy would be awesome. I mean even if we (England) don't make it (and we won't) it'll be nice to see someone a little more out of the blue go the whole hog.

One team everyone seems to overlooking are the Germans, who are just going out and doing their thing. They've won before, and are playing just about as well as anyone right now.

As for the entire tourney, it seems very interesting to me that one of Japan, Turkey, Sweden or Senegal are going to be in the semi-finals... What a weird World Cup!!!

I don't think the US threw the game at all, especially considering that if they lost, South Korea HAD to beat Portugal, which isn't something you could exactly predict. Hell, you can hardly predict ANYTHING in this tournament. I will say that Mexico is better than Italy. I just wish we had Hejduk the next game. I like his defense.

Sweden isn't such a surprise. They did finish third back in 1994.

Also, Portgual has only been in two other World Cups in their history, so it's not like their elimination is anywhere near as historically significant as France or Argentina.

it's significant because they are ranked in the top 5 (#3?) in the world...like brazil, france, & argintina, they were EXPECTED to be in the round of 16

Yep, it's not like we lost the lead after they scored or something. Also, I didn't see this game, but why the hell didn't DaMarcus Beasley start again? Did they say anything about it? Or is this just another one of Arena's "bright" ideas?

I'm not Bruce Arena, but I'd have to assume it was because Beasley was carrying a yellow card from the first match with Portugal. He wanted to lessen the chances of him picking up another in today's game, which would've kept him out of their 2nd round game. That at least makes some sense.

But in other news, I am sad for Jeff Agoos. He's SO much better than how he's been playing.

I don't think it's sour grapes for me to say that Portugal got totally shafted yesterday. I mean 2 RED cards and played the entire second half 11 to 9. Well no surprise that this would happen with Korea playing in there homeland, but still...

U.S choked and Poland gave Portual a huge favour and Portual only needed a tie (going in I was certain they'd need a win) but being 11 guys to 9 they couldn't hold of the one Korea goal. Put Portugal just missed by hit a goal post. Errr soccer is not good for your heart.

Vehement disagreement. Portugal's players were a complete disgrace to the notion of fair play in that game. They were throwing themselves to the pitch like a complete bunch of sissies. Machismo must not translate into the Portuguese. Figo looked disinterested the entire match. The first red card was the most blatent example of a leg-breaking, ACL-tearing tackle I have seen in some time. If the Korean player had his right foot planted instead of his left, "he'd have been eating his Thanksgiving dinner through a tube". Well, not really, but I [heart] that quote.

The ref didn't shaft Portugal. Portugal shafted Portugal.

I agree with Gavintzu on his point about how Portugal was playing; they never seemed in it at all. In addition, although Portugal hit the post in the 89th minute or so, Korea had about 4 or 5 good scoring opportunities in the last 5 minutes.

Just an aside, but Seattle picks 6th. Cleveland has the 7th pick and I am really, really hoping Berry slips thru to # 7. (edit for formatting)
