UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - UN employees are expected to issue an unprecedented vote of no confidence in Secretary-General Kofi Annan (news - web sites), union sources say, after he pardoned the body's top oversight official over a series of allegations.

The UN staff union, in what officials said was the first vote of its kind in the more than 50-year history of the United Nations (news - web sites), was set to approve a resolution withdrawing support for the embattled Annan and senior UN management.

Still, it sums up the problems with the UN that his downfall may come from pardoning a sexual harrassment charge rather than the food for oil scandal.

Eh, either way someone pull the handle and flush that turd.

Personally, I would rather see a few nations dragged out and humiliated for Oil For Food before hitting Anan like that.

If he is kicked to the curb, whoever comes in can make some grand speech about how Oil For Food was handled corruptly, and that it will STOP NOW. France will applaud, and all the nations involved will breath a sigh of relief. Then the issue just goes away.

I'd love to see Anan take the hit, but he is too perfect of a scapegoat to go down first.

Does the UN actually do anything but try and clear up after America anyway, and provide weapons inspectors no-one pays any attention to? It's a big bosses' club, fuck em.

I let a lot of them go, but that comment was nonsensical.

EDIT: More importantly, steam is continuing to gather to dump Kofi

The rebellion is an embarrassment for Mr Annan, and comes as he faces intense criticism for corruption in the UNs Oil-for-Food programme in Saddam Husseins Iraq.

The UN chief suffered another blow yesterday when he was forced to admit that civilian and peacekeeping personnel on UN duty in Congo had committed acts of gross misconduct.

Officials plan to make public on Monday the lurid results of their investigation into UN officials having sex with under-age local girls. Responding to staff complaints yesterday, the UN managers offered to hold talks next week with the elected president of the UN staff union, which represents thousands of UN workers and around the world.
