I have a question. I have been thinking a lot about the argument that we should not go into Iraq because the ONLY reason Bush and co. wants to do it is for oil.
It occured to me that the opposition in the Persian Gulf War said the exact same thing. We are going in there for oil only.
My question is... where is our oil? I mean, the way I saw it... we went in, liberated Kuwait, and left (aside from our usual presence in the region, of course). Where the hell is our damned oil? Why am I paying $1.71 per gallon if we WON the last time we went in there, and oil was our objective?

Because, in theory, the reason the gulf war was "for oil" was because Iraq would have controlled Kuwait's oil. So, we did it to make sure HE didnt have it, and made sure our "friends" did.

When we colonize Iraq, then your gas should be cheaper.

Sweet!! Even in Jersey I gotta pay around $1.45-$1.55 for a gallon of freakin regular. I can't Imagine what those poor sods in the midwest have to pay for their gas.

And to the hippies who say "no blood for oil, blah blah blah..." Big and Fast cars with BIG and loud engines are part of our American way of life. Is the American way of life not worth shedding some terrorist's blood over? I know the correct answer, and I also know the answer from the left will differ from it. The eco-freaks are the reason the car I have now is plastic, unlike my old Dodge Charger. Damn hippies and their gas mileage rules.

If we are going to war, at least there is a strategic interest. Its better than when we left our troops hanging out to dry in Somalia with no national interest at stake.

I want you to know, I agree with everything I've just said.

I'm not entirely convinced anymore that there's going to be a war. At least not yet. The GOP would be crazy to let Bush get into a war now. It ruined his father's chances for re-election, and it could certainly do the same thing again. Especially when Bush lost in the popular vote in the last election. No, if there's anybody smart in the GOP we won't see war until two years from now. The only moves they'll make are ones that play well in the press so they can keep Republican control in 2004. Then they'll have four more years to let Bush do whatever he wants.

-Jag

Unless of course, Bush is actually calling his own shots. Or someone in the military is promising a 100% success in Iraq. Which won't happen.

With poison running through your veins, and death marching solemnly towards you, heroic acts become more of a necessity as you see your time dwindling.

Vanquishing your enemies, making amends to those you have wronged, and leaving words of love and kindness for those around you become second nature as your own mortality looms

However, true strength lies not in these last desperate acts, but in the actions of one who has to get out of bed the next day and face the consequences of doing that which you believe is right.

But we are already AT war... I am sorry to say. And even the Democrat's polls show that the majority of Americans are in favor of war in Iraq.
And it was the tax issue that killed Bush Sr... not Iraq.

Agreed...the Gulf War was the only thing that even kept Bush Sr. from negative approval numbers.

And as for the war...it's not just oil. If cheaper oil is a side benefit though? Fantastic. We need to find alternatives to dependancy on foreign oil, but in the meantime I'm sick of our nation's money going to countries and persons that hate us!

We feed their personal kingdoms, and in return, they plot to kill us or harbor those who do...very nice.

Pool-Boy asks:

where is our oil? I mean, the way I saw it... we went in, liberated Kuwait, and left (aside from our usual presence in the region, of course). Where the hell is our damned oil?

At the risk of sounding like a Marxist, you have to ask yourself who is the "we" in the "our damned oil". During the First Gulf War, oil hit what a barrel? $40? And who benefitted from that? The American Consumer? Of course not. The Big Oil Companies in Texas? Bingo.

The Bushes are good friends with dozens of oilmen ... they are oilmen themselves. The oilmen would say the Bushes are "one of us". And when oil hits $40 a barrel, the campaign contributions can really get ludicrous, because the profits being pumped out of the ground in Texas get ludicrous.

The interest of Big Oil in Iraq is the same as the interest Big Oil shows in Nigeria. They don't want the Iraqi oilfields for cheap gas for American consumers ... they want it for the big profits and the huge Christmas bonuses those profits entail. I believe it's called "capitalism".

Oh, and Jag ... my over/under for war in Iraq is Valentine's Day. It's not a question of "if", but "when". The Bush Administration really seems keen on it, ya know?

I dont like to say it was anything really happens in the Persian Gulf just for oil for us greedy americans. In actuality we only get about 12-15% of our oil from the Persian Gulf. The Europeans and the Japanese are way more dependent on the Middle east Oil reserves than we are. But I think the Gulf War happened because the Saudis couldnt handle the Iraqis if they decided they wanted their land also. SO they asked for our help, and we helped because we didnt want one man having a strangelhold on a good prtion of the planets crude. Plus we didnt want Saddam to really get bold and try something against a nuclear armed Isreal. Just my opinion.

Also as a military guy I can ASSURE you that while everybody knows we can beat Saddam, the senior leadership is very worried about what a victory in Iraq could cost us. It could be a very ugly and drawn out conflict.

Iraq could be a very serious problem for our troops. We have the most advanced technical forces in the world. But the greatest weapons are nothing if the war degenerates into a block to block urban combat scenario.

And as far as the oil goes; we are sitting on vast untapped oil reserves in ANWR incase anybody forgot that. Amazing that the conservative Dems didn't want to go along with that(to whet the palates of their eco-nut friends) but will go ahead and put our troops in harms way to get it. At least the administration is somewhat more honest and wants the oil in both places.

I'm just telling you what Bush says.

Given Bush's close ties with the Saudis, his letting the Bin Laden family fly out after 9/11, and his close ties with same, I'll take his opinion with a grain of salt.

The only reason we suppost the Saudis despite their support of terrorism is because they put up a lot of business capital. For God's sake they don;t even have all that much oil.

My question is, when have we been taking this oil to benifit the Texas Oil companies? I mean really, you have bush attacking Iraq where there is oil on one hand, and texas oilmen in the other, and you are making a theoretical connection.
Where are the facts? Exactly HOW are they being helped? The fluctuations in the gas price? Hell, that happens every year- I seriously doubt that is any help at all. And since no contracts have been handed out to rush into Iraq to drill for oil after the last attack... I can't think of a single way they have benifited. Can you enlighten me?

This wont be a "block to block war" with hand to hand combat as everybody fears. The Military will take a nice, slow approach, and cut them off from everybody, like in the Gulf War, (admittedly, it will take longer without the huge international pressence) and one by one, choke out the republican gaurd, and hopefully, overthrow Saddam. Just let nancyboy Powell be kept out of the decision making so he wont screw us again, and things should eventually work out!

No... you dont know this for sure. No one does. I work in the Atlantic fleet HQ in Norfolk and the war planners have no earthly idea how this will play out. Thats why the Army has been beating their troops to death on urban combat techniques. Theyre really hoping it doesnst become a war on the streets of Baghdad but they are prepared to do it. Dont think for a minute that this will be a nice little war played on CNN with a lot of cruise missile video and all that. This war if it happens has the possibility of being very ugly and drawn out with thousands of American lives lost. I really dont think the Iraqis are just going to roll over and let us have Baghdad without a fight. And leave Powell out of this... LOL. Hes the one guy in the Bush inner circle that really understands what can happen.. .
