After starting the year 6-14-1 and firing their coach, the Capitals have since gone 37-17-7 and won their division. If I'm the Philly Flyers, I'm throwing Sunday's meaningless last game since right now I'd take my chances against the Penguins or Canadiens rather than face Ovechkin and company.

“How is it that I am a good actor? What I do is I... pretend to be the person I’m portraying. You’re confused. Case in point: in Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson comes to me and says ‘I would like you to be Gandalf the Wizard,’ and I said ‘You are aware that I am not really a wizard?’ and Peter Jackson said ‘I would like you to use your acting skills to portray a wizard for the duration of the show.’ So I said ‘Okay’ and then I said to myself ‘Mmm.. How do I do that?’ And this is what I did: I imagined that I was a wizard, and then I pretended, and acted, in that way on the stage. How did I know what to say? The words were written down for me in a script. How did I know where to stand? People told me where to stand." -- Sir Ian McKellen, Extras

2 of the East matchups are already set because of how the tiebreakers play out. Seeding isn't set yet, as there are 2 games that will decide final seeding.

Canadiens-Bruins is locked in as one matchup, Rangers-Devils is also locked in. If the Rangers beat the Devils in regulation today, they get the home-ice advantage in the 4/5 matchup, any other result gives the Devils home ice. If Philadelphia wins today, they get the 6 seed, Montreal-Boston becomes the 1-8 matchup, Pittsburgh plays Ottawa in the 2-7 game, and Washington takes on Philly. If Pittsburgh wins, they get the 1 seed, Philly is the 8, Habs-Bruins is the 2/7 series, and Washington gets Ottawa.

As for the West, again, things are pretty much set. The top 5 seeds, and the 8 seed are all clear. A Colorado win, or OT/shootout loss today gives them the 6 seed, with a regulation loss giving the 6 seed to Calgary.

Matchups will be:
Detroit-Nashville
San Jose-Calgary/Colorado
Minnesota-Colorado/Calgary
Anaheim-Dallas

You can thank Bob Gainey for that, shipping over Christobal Huet for a number two pick, a trade which seems to have helped both clubs since Price went 7-3 since the trade (the trade being as much about boosting Price's confidence as anything else) and Huet won ten games in a row or something like that.

Other than the bragging rights of winning the conference, the Philly-Pitt game means nothing to the Habs, although tanking a game against the Pens to get them as an opponent sounds like a MASSIVELY bad idea. (Did the Giants teach no one nothing about sports karma?)

I was going to say something about Ottawa, but they are so screewed no matter who their first round opponents are.

Alot of people questions the trade, but I saw the logic after a bit. Simply put; Gainey thinks Price's tie is NOW, and as Lalakor said maybe he wanted to show Price he felt hat way. OR they knew they were going to get rid of him anyway and they didn't want to get Buffalo'd. Or maybe (never thought of this till now) he thought Washington wouldn't make the pakyoffs this year. Either way, Gainey (and Price for that matter) have proven to be winners on every level, and the trade has worked wonders for both teams.

I like our chances this year, a lot. We stack up well against every team out there. Bring on the Bruins!!

I'm happy that the Caps are in, but they're still just the Southeast champs. Pittsburgh and Montreal have been just as hot down the stretch and are significantly better teams. A Penguins/Capitals ECF would be some kind of something, though -- that's what I'm yearning for.

I haven't been this excited about the Caps since the were in the finals and got swept by the Red Wings about 10 years ago.

I will admit, hockey is one of my least watched sports, but I'm going to get tickets to the Phone Booth and check out a playoff game or two.
