|  #1 Posted on 22.11.05 0919.48 | Instant Rating: 8.84 | This morning I spotted about fifty people lined up at the Best Buy, presumably for the Xbox 360 - I didn't even know they were going to be scarce - and even last night there were four people in lawn chairs out front while the place was still open for (as I call them) normal people.
Have YOU ever waited in a line overnight to purchase/see something? Looking back, would you do it again?
I camped out in the church parking lot one night to make sure I could get one of the remaining spots in the summer backpacking trip, but that was more something wacky to pass the time with friends during a long summer night - there wasn't ever any REAL danger of me not making the backpack and I could have just driven up to the church office in the morning. But that's my only story. I tend to believe that people who DO wait in line over night are nuts with no life - but maybe I just don't feel that way about, say, Bruce Springsteen than other people do.
What's your story? (Or do you even have one?)

There was also a draw to win some prizes, none of which I won. I was probably the youngest(24) of the 50 or so people there.

The fact that I was not out for last night's release kind of gives away how I feel about it. It's kind of cool to have some like-minded strangers anticipating something with you...makes the time go quicker. Still, that's not enough to get me to do it again.
Don't get me wrong, I liked the system. However, considering there was a price drop less than six months later and all the early consoles had shoddy hardware (specifically Thompson-branded DVD drives), I just can't justify buying a launch 360 - especially for 100 dollars more than the original XBox.
I've waited in line for 24+ hours for general admission concerts so I could be in the front. I won't be listing what band it was for, as I would be needled relentlessly.

I've waited in line for 24+ hours for general admission concerts so I could be in the front. I won't be listing what band it was for, as I would be needled relentlessly.
But, it's ANONYMOUS. 
As a teenager I waited out for many a concert: Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Monsters of Rock, Metallica, Ozzy, and the like. We got front row seats for Def Leppard's "In the Round" show, which was awesome.
Any more, I'd just as soon pay double the face price on ebay or something than try and wait in line. Time IS money, after all.

I won't have an HDTV for at least 6 months, I can get the Xbox then.
I stood in line (virtually) for World Series tickets. Actually, I gave my then GF money and went to work, but she got them for me.

Old people don't wait in line for anything. If we go to Friendly's and there's not a booth available, we're not waiting. You never know when you're going to get hit by a bus, so the less time standing around, the more time to do something else!

oh and the ONLY restaurant I will wait more than 10 minutes ot eat at is Lambert's in Ozark, MO (home of throwed rolls). I once waited 90 minutes for a table.

I learned that lesson in college, after Book Buy back time, when it took forever to get to the guy who bought the books back, and only got like 40 bucks for them.
Come to think of it, I also had to wait a helluva long time to get my financial aid in college too...
But now, I'm not that patient...I'll go the same day it's released and pick it up, but I'm not even into going to those Midnight Release Parties...

If a World Series or Stanley Cup Final ever comes to the Los Angeles area again, I'd gladly do the same thing.

| #13 Posted on 23.11.05 1520.14 | Instant Rating: 4.05 | When FUTURE SHOP opened up their big store at the Warden Power Centre in Scarborough...I was there; I waited in line for five hours, because they were selling multipacks of CD software for $20.00 (there were about twenty titles, it was sweet) and as well, they were selling a computer CDROM for $30. Back then, I was running a 386, so it was a MUST HAVE item.
Thank goodness the weather was nice.

I've never waited overnight for a table at Friendly's - only my food once I get the table...
In 1984, my friend and I waited overnight in Cooperstown for autographs. For the Induction Weekend, right outside the main hotel that the HOF'ers stay in, they have a large tent that the players sit in and fans can go through getting autographs. That year, Aparicio and Pee Wee Reese got in, and Ted Williams was there, as were guys like Kaline, Snider, Mize, Cool Papa Bell, Judy Johnson, Joe Sewell, etc. They opened it up at 9am, and we were on line at 9pm the night before, very much the first people there. Other people started showing up around 2am, and it seemed fun at the time. My friend told Ted Williams that he had been waiting on line for over 12 hours, and TW replied, "It was freezing out last night. What are you, stupid?"

I wasn't going to wait at all because I didn't feel like braving sub-30 temperatures for a $400 system, but when I found out that my local 24-hour Wal-Mart was doing a midnight launch that would allow me to wait INDOORS, I was all up for it. I ended up getting the very last Core system (all the Premiums had been spoken for by 2:00p, I got there at 4:00p). It was worth it, as now it appears getting a 360 is nearly impossible without plunking down $700+ for some wacky bundle.
I've waited outdoor in the cold for 3 years in a row at Best Buy for Black Friday. This year broke that streak as I waited indoors at Wal-Mart to help a friend pick up some things for his new apartment. I got there at 2:30a in the morning, not knowing what to expect with Wal-Mart's ticketless free-for-all system, but it turned out that if I got there as late as 4:30a (for a 5:00a sale) we would have been fine.
In college I camped out for tickets twice. Once was for a football game against our in-state rivals. The other time was for basketball tickets for our home game against Dook, the most evilest school in the world. I also waited about 4 hours in the rain for tickets to our home game that year against UNC, but I don't really consider that camping out.

They went on sale at 10 AM, and I think I got there at 5, and still was way back in line. It shows how much times have changed for me, as I don't think I've paid for a wrestling thing (besides the occasional DVD) in years, and haven't watched a full episode of RAW in ages.

Was it worth it? Not to her. They left before I got anywhere near the front of the line. Not to me either. Whatever would have come my way by getting the autographs didn't and I blew an afternoon standing between two especially bitchy Chelsea queens.
(nothing against gay people here, I just hate flaming bitchy drama queens of any and all persuasions.)
Even if it means taking a chubby, I will suck it up.
