Duke just lost to Maryland, a good but certainly not great team, and Coach K said that this years team definitely wasn't a number one team just yet. Do you guys think they are overrated or was this just a hiccup?

I live in Carolina, and several of my best friends are Duke fans (bastards). We all agreed from day one, that Duke has always been too high up in the rankings. The actual hiccup here was that JJ Redick turned out to be such a shooter, that it looked like Duke could overcome their youth. So while I wouldn't count them out at all, and I do expect them to go far in the tournament, no way do they deserve the number 1 spot. They haven't really played anyone who's up to their level yet. Wake and Virginia were their first actual tests, with Maryland the only one they've failed so far.

As for Maryland being a mediocre team, I think you're pretty far off the mark. While they've dropped a few of their high profile games, they're still the defending National champs.

While I'm sure we'll only get four, this is another one of those years, where I wish we could see 6 ACC teams get tourney bids. The conference is just that strong.

I cannot believe we blew our first half lead, but we at least sealed the deal. Carolina over UCONN, those goddamn hacking bastards.

Jag, I love Maryland, more than any team cept my beloved Pitt Panthers (who should be no.1), but they don't seem to have quite the aura about them that a defending champ would have. Certainly I think they were Duke's biggest test so far, but they just don't impress me as much. And as for JJ Redick, well, I hate him with a passion so that's that.

dUKe is always overrated. They are the darlings of the entire college basketball media, year in and year out. They have earned some of it, but a lot of it is reputation and Coach K infatuation.

Pitt #1? I guess those victories against Duquesne, Arkansas Pine Bluff, Norfolk State, St. Francis, Southeast Louisiana are more impressive than I would give them credit. Good victories against Syracuse and Notre Dame (another overrated team). It's hard to call Ohio State a "great" win. Then the Georgia game....... (not a bad loss, a loss against a good team). I'm just not sold on Pitt.

As far as the ACC only getting 4 bids to the dance, I would be shocked. I think they will get 6 bids:

Maryland
Duke
North Carolina
N.C. State
Wake Forest
Clemson/Georgia Tech/Virginia

I don't know, the NCAA selection committee has a habit of throwing out one or two ACC teams at the lower end of the field. Clemson getting a bid means hell has frozen over (though this may be the year they earn it). And if Virginia drops any more in conference, they'll be sweating it come march. Also, NC State hasn't really played anyone yet, so look to see how they match up in conference before you throw them in.

Basically, every team in the ACC except for Wake Forest (loss to Duke) and Duke (loss to Maryland) has one or two bad losses outside of the conference. So if any of them drop a bunch in conference (Virgina... last year? Dropped from Top 25 in Feb to unranked in March) then they're screwed.

If most of the teams end up trading games, then I could see 5, maybe even 6 go to the dance.

I'd say they were overrated, only because they were the last major underdefeated team.

With so many freshman, they probably be as good as classic dukie teams.

I'm just happy that IU managed to knock off Illini at home.

Notre Dame was really overrated for beating Texas, Maryland and Marquette when each was in the Top Ten this season.

Those were 3 outstanding wins for Notre Dame (although I think that Marquette is living off of goodwill as far as the Pollsters are concerened; their resume is lacking in "name" wins). Creighton wasn't a bad loss, neither was Pitt. I'm thrilled (but somewhat surprised) that the Wildcats handled them the way they did. I also think that Maryland is the best of the 3 "Top 10" teams that Notre Dame beat the first week of December. Texas' only quality win was against Georgia.

Arizona is probably the best team in the country. There are probably around 15-20 teams that can beat Arizona, but that 15-20 are open to losing to each other and probably 20-40 more teams. I really think that Florida is going to be tough. College ball right now is so competitive it boils down to "who's hot".

well i never put much faith in the rankings of College Basketball. I find Duke to be every bit as explosive as they have been in past years. Dante Jones is dead on from outside this yeat, which is funny bc i remember him more for his dunks last year.
Carolina
- what a start to the UCONN game . Didnt get to see any of it but the 1st 15 minutes but im guessing that their young team started giving the ball away with turnovers left and right as they did in the Rutgers game i was at. Good team who actually seem more explosive without Sean May bc they tend to be more of a perimeter team, which is what is needed to win in COllege Basketball circa 2003 IMO

JWStorm: Speaking of overrated... UConn hadn't played anyone real (I'll take some potshots at my alma mater, they're no good at basketball anyway) until OU. Then they run into UNC (who should be ranked the next poll), and... oops. Then again, those are their only two losses...

Please! Yes Duke is overrated they should not be in the top 10. As for the ACC as a whole? They are overrated too, there is no way they should get six teams in the tournament. The SEC and MAYBE the Big 12 are the only conferences that have six teams good enough to be in it. Actually the SEC could make an argument for seven teams.

duke overrated? a little, MAYBE...

ACC overrated? not at all...in the last 30 years (1973-2002), the ACC have been in ~~~HALF~~~ (15) national championship games, and won 7 of them.

2002 MARYLAND over indiana
2001 DUKE over arizona
1999 conn over DUKE
1994 arkansas over DUKE
1993 NORTH CAROLINA over michigan

1992 DUKE over michigan
1991 DUKE over kansas
1990 unlv over DUKE
1986 louisville over DUKE
1983 NCSU over houston

1982 NORTH CAROLINA over georgetown
1981 indiana over NORTH CAROLINA
1978 kentucky over DUKE
1977 marquette over NORTH CAROLINA
1974 NCSU over marquette

if we go by final fours, out of the last 30 years, the ACC has had been in the final four 24 times in 22 different tournies:
Duke: 9
Maryland: 2 (both in the last 2 years)
NC: 9
NCSU: 2
Virginia: 2

The ACC is a basketball Conference. the ACC are to Basketball as the Big 12 are to Football.
