I have always been a WWE fan for the last 15 years but rarely watched WCW except for a few Nitors during the Monday Night Wars. Can someone tell me what is War Games style match?

But the mention of a "war games style" match makes me think that it wouldn't be exactly like the old one used to be, and I thought I remembered reading something once about WWE not owning the rights to the War Games name even though they bought WCW. The real version of War Games was 5-on-5, two rings, a steel cage, no elimination, win by submission only.

Still, everytime they build up a gang feud, everyone gets giddy with the thoughts of War Games. It ain't happenin'.

| #9 Posted on 29.10.04 2304.40 | Instant Rating: 1.51 | Okay, I'll put down the full rules as far as I can remember:
1. Two rings, one big ass cage 2. Two teams of Five 3. A member of each team starts in the cage 4. After five minutes, a member of whichever team won a "coin flip" (always won by the heels) comes out and joins the action. It this point, teams alternate who comes out every two (?) minutes. 5. Win by submission only, but submissions ONLY count when all ten guys are in the rings.
I'm a little fuzzy on some details (i.e. the time periods between entrances) as its been years since I've seen one of the good (read: non-Hogan) versions. Personally, I'd still love to see a War Games match in WWE, even if they just used one ring and stuck it in the HitC.
EDIT: Although, using the Elimination Chamber ain't a bad idea...

If so, why wouldnt TNA try and snatch it up to its advantage, to attract that elusive long gone "WCW-NWA" market that have since long gone off? The War Games concept was a little before my time, but from the tapes Ive seen it was a unique concept and something that is under-utalized in a landscape where good ideas are seldom used. But they'll F it up and give us the WWE version, in the elimination chamber. Damn you Vince, you stuborn damn bastard; you won the war, get over it. TNA has used it, albeit in one ring with ten guys (man that ring was cramped!) But it was still good. I like the idea of doing it in the HIAC. Since the elimanation chamber was made to be a war games rip off, there would be no need in makin it a "war games style match". Elimination chamber has a new man enter every 90 sec, as the last (shudder) WG 2X cage match did. Speaking of WG, and I know the movie sucked, but the WG 2000 in the Ready To Rumble triple cage was great! Crappy movie or not, that was an awsome gimmick.

That's be awkward, since the Elimination Chamber only has four subchambers for isolating wrestlers until they're allowed into the match. Assuming two men start such a match, that would leave the other six men in only four chambers. You could add more chambers, I suppose, but as much as that thing cost to build, it might not be worth the effort. A 3-on-3 Elimination Chamber tag match would make more sense, but they've gone out of their way to put four men on each team. | TheMikeSays

| #15 Posted on 30.10.04 0309.52 | I'll just take the War Games rumor as wishful thinking, which is about all the hope people should be putting into the WWE these days. It would be a bit awkward to have two 4-on-4 elimination matches, only to muck up one more than the other.
Also, outside of the "spike to the head" finish, with this rumored set of participants, it leaves the possible submissions pretty low. Benoit has the Crossface/Sharpshooter, Jericho has the Walls, Flair has the Figure Four, Edge MIGHT whip out the Edge-o-cutioner, but other than those, not much else out of anyone. Unless Triple H wants to steal the indian deathlock again, or Orton actually makes someone tap to a chinlock.

This seems pretty cool, but I think maybe they ought to go with a regular Survivor Series match here and then go with a War Games match at Armageddon. Why not get two months out of the feud? They don't really have a challenger while they wait to build Orton back up. | CANADIAN BULLDOG

Which would really be kind of counterproductive. I'd rather they just do a four-on-four Survivor Series match unless they're willing to do it right.

I thought that would be the perfect way to end the Invasion angle, but since Dusty owns it the traditional Survivor Series tag will do. I do think if Eric was smart he would open up the Elemination Chamber just so the faces would fight among themselves for the title. Since Monday, now that they have team leaders in Jericho and Benoit and no Orton for Evolution its going to be hard for Evolution to stop if at all. Thats fine by me, its about time to end Evolution''s reign anyway.
I love the idea of Wargames and I hate Dusty for having and I hate TNA for owning it and never really using it. I don't know how you would trademark games, but since no one ever tried a Hell in a Cell match I guess its ok. Wargames is awesome on so many levels, I really wished on the Cage match DVD, WWE put out at least the first two would be on them. Its amazing to watch. | mercer

I think that its one of those things that if done right (original) its awsome, no beating it. If not done right (nWo, Wolfpac, oWn) its awful! I'd like to think that the EC and HIAC have evolved from the wargames, and have taken good lessens from it, but it would be cool to see again. Speaking of cool cage ideas, has anybody checked out TNA's six sides of steel. THAT is a cool gimmick!
