since Harry Potter was sold out, I saw this instead and loved it. best movie I've seen this year. It shouldn't be compared solely to Ray, because Ray was a great movie as well. They both rocked.

The casting was great. Cash never had much of a voice so Phoenix does a good enough job here. Mangold has to be one of the most surefire 4 star directors with this Identity and Copland. He reuses Patrick well as Cash's SOB father.

The songs work well, only one missing is Understand Your Man. Even non-Cash fans should like this movie.

Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa!

Maybe Cash never had much a voice in the American Idol, Simon Cowell breathing down your neck about being "pitchy" kind of way, but that is NOT what singin' a good old country tune is about.

When it comes to being emotive, when it comes to communicating something deeper than the words allow by themselves, when it comes to making a song come to life, there have been few voices in the same league as Cash's.

Saw the movie tonight and was absolutely blown away. Phoenix amazes, but Reese Witherspoon steals the show. She showed some great acting chops that I didn't even know she had and she's deserving of an Oscar nod for this one.

And know that if you see this movie, you'll be itching for the soundtrack. I know I was. Come for the wonderful portrait of Cash's life and enjoy little bonus moments like the appearences of Elvis's chili dog craving.

This pretty much says it all

Fantastic picture. I wanted to get back in line to see it again. I currently live in Hendersonville, TN (& grew up close to there), so it was nice to see it mentioned in the film. I'm pretty sure I've been by that house as a kid.

I totally concur with the nod to Reese Witherspoon. She was fabulous (as was Joaquin).

Anybody who says Cash never had much of a voice, hasn't sat, half drunk and listened to SATISFIED MIND and shed a tear. The man can emote.

The man is in both the Rock and Roll AND the Country Music hall of fame.

Probably America's most underrated and overlooked musical force of the past fifty years.

I just saw this tonite. If Pheonix doesnt WIN the Oscar, then the fix is in. His transformation to Cash was astounding. I never thought he would be any good, since I pretty much hate him in every movie I have ever seen him in.

And, Reese should be at least nominated. She was truley suprising and amazing as June Carter.

I cant say enough about this movie. It was brilliant.

Dude, I feel ya, but see Phillip Seymour Hoffman in Capote first. I'm not saying he's the sure-fire winner, but it's gonna be one Hella close battle.

After Fox's win for Ray last year, there is no way the Academy will give it to an actor playing a singer. I thought Phoenix was much better as Cash than Fox as Ray, but timing is everything. Look for Hoffman to win for Capote as he was off the charts awesome in this movie.

If Phoenix doesn't win, I'll be disappointed. If Reese Witherspoon doesn't win, I'll be scratching my head at the sheer lunacy of the Academy.

Saw this last night. EVERYBODY in it deserves at least an Oscar nomination. The script and directing were okay, but the actors carried this film. I totally hope Waylon Payne gets a best supporting nomination and a WIN for playing Jerry Lee Lewis.

I wouldn't use "pitchy," but at least you get my point. I'd say his voice had a lack of range and color. He always sounded like an old man who had a hard life. He wouldn't make it far on AI.

I'm not much for the elitist Oscar awards and I don't think the man in black would be worried about them either. although the movie didn't direct itself.

Bottom Line: it is a great movie, worth repeat viewing.

Saying JC wouldn't make it far on American Idol is like implying that "American Gothic" isn't a good painting because it isn't as colorful as a Rainbow Brite cartoon.

You don't have to be bright, poppy, and colorful to express emotion. Not everybody has to be a goddamn attention whore star spangled banner fuckup.

For some reason, that made me laugh for a solid minute.

ANYHOW, I would say Cash's voice was smooth, and expressive, instead of showy.

I cant imagine anybody else singing the Male part of "It Aint Me, Babe" or " 'Cause I Love You". (sorry, thats OLD SCHOOL Cash)

Well shoot, I do know this one guy. He even sings the entire song. Not that I'm disagreeing with everyone in this thread except one's assessment of Cash's evocative voice.

As for the movie, it was, um, efficient how they minimized the story of Johnny Cash to that of a guy who obsessed over one girl and took drugs. But 'Spoon is where it's at; she deserves all of the awards for actressing.

Well, let's call a spade a spade, here. That's pretty much Johnny Cash's life in a nutshell.

Reese Witherspoon was mind-blowingly good. And really, there were a lot of really, really good performances in this one. Waylon Malloy Payne (Jerry Lee Lewis), Dallas Roberts (Sam Phillips) and of course, Robert Freakin' Patrick were all awesome. And I loved the nice little bit of stunt casting with Shooter Jennings playing Waylon Jennings.

As for Cash's voice, go listen to "Sunday Morning Coming Down" and tell me that his voice doesn't have any range or color.

I finally got around to seeing this yesterday, and I was blown away. Very even-keeled look at the Man in Black, with excellent acting, use of music, and overall just a fantastic film.
