Well, I was quite surprised by this. I thought Edwards would be a lot better than he came off, mind you I was only LISTENING not WATCHING the debate.

Cheney played the scolding elder pretty well. Too bad this will have very little to do with the election.

Cheney wins 10-9.

10-9? Radio must have added about 6 points to Edward's performance.

Well, there wasn't a knockdown

Cheney just outboxed him.

I tend to agree. Cheney was stern and hit the high points. I liked how Cheney would be asked to respond and he'd just refuse. And then he'd just hit all the issues Edwards raised in his response time and hard.

worst by Cheney - Dick, you're wearing a Mike, my friend, stop moving so much!

Edwards - worst moment, crapped in his diaper when Cheney started talking about Tort Reform.

I'm voting Bush anyway, but Dick Cheney made me feel all warm and fuzzy tonight. The man is competent. He knows what he's talking about. Meanwhile all Edwards can muster is the usual "we'll do better," and "well, uh... he's lying."

How about Ifill softballing Edwards? Cheney gets the weird AIDS question that neither candidate can really field (too specific, for one), and Edwards gets "Do you feel personally insulted when they call for tort reform?" Get off your knees next time, Gwen.

Edwards seemed to avoid answering the question in favor of returning to stock talking points, especially early on. Not to say that Cheney didn't dodge his fair share of questions, Edwards just tended to be more conspicuous.

I have to say that Cheney did the best job. Not only was he relentless in his attacks ("Tonight is the first time I've met him" was vicious), but he also turned around and had one of the classiest responses, by thanking Edwards for talking about his family. Of course, he also didn't thank Edwards at the end of the debate.

Cheney won the debate, but it will be interesting to see if Edwards' repetition or Cheney's agressiveness affect perspective over the next few days.

Worst moderator ever.

btw Edwards won. I liked how he made sure the public knew of the VP's difficult position on same sex marriage as well as constantly attacking him on Haliburton corruption.

I thought this one came off as pretty even. Both guys, frankly, came off better than Bush and Kerry did last week. George Will made a good point on ABC about how this debate will be a moot point in three days, since we've got another weapons inspection report coming up tomorrow, plus a jobs report on Thursday.

btw, ABC has by far the best debate coverage of any of the major networks.

What are you talking about? She threw a question at him about flip flopping. She even said to him at one point, "are you trying to have it both ways?"

I thought Cheney was the better debator but his delivery could be off putting to a lot of swing voters. Edwards is really good at speeches but debating does not seem to be his forte. His best moment was his closing, IMO.

Cheney has always been an evil and skeevy SOB but everybody knew that going in.

Yes he did a great job of going after Cheney's family. A class act that Edwards. Oh, BTW Edwards doesn't support gay marriage and said so in the debate, but I imagine that'll get overlooked.

Lets see...

- She accidentally gave Edwards extra time at the end
- Too many questions related to meaningless personal issues
- Mistakenly said that Edward's neglected to mention health care when Cheney did. (Edward's corrected her right away but looked childish and whiny doing it)

I thought both guys did well and hit up their strengths. They definitely dropped more facts and specifics of plans than in the first debate, and there was actually INTERACTION (god forbid) between the two. IMHO, a tie, possibly with the slightest of slight advantages going to Cheney.

EDIT: Yay, my 200th post!

I thought he said that he didn't support it personally but he wanted it left as a state issue?

Wow, I thought she came off fair overall, but if anything I thought she came off harder on Edwards. Some of the early questions seemed to be phrased to make Kerry look stupid, like the one about allies already saying they won't send troops if he's elected and "isn't your position naive"? There was a similar skeptical question about Kerry promising to cut taxes and cut the deficit all at once. Overall I thought Cheney took Edwards to the woodshed, but to his credit Edwards took it pretty well.

The thing that bothers me about the Kerry Edwards campaign is how they are really trying to have there cake and eat it too. They are not for gay marriage but yet don't want the amendment ,they voted for the war in Iraq and the Patriot act and then they say both are unfair.

As far as the debate tonight I think they both were very strong but I would have to give the edge to Cheney. The thing that stuck out for me about Edwards was the one question where they were not allowed to use Kerry or Bush in the answer and he brought up Kerry two times, it just looked really bad. Cheney had this whole "I'm better then you" attitude the whole night and he was at his best when he didn't take more time to answer the questions. The Race at Case is just an awesome name I wonder if Don King set that up? And I'm not sure about this but I think Cheney either forgot to thank Edwards or did it on purpose at the end.

Actually -- my favorite part is hearing Dick Cheney alleging that tonight was the first time that they've met face to face, and then the Kerry rapid-response pulls this out of their bag:

I'd have to score this as a tie. If I HAD to choose, I'd say Cheney won, but only by a slim margin. Definitley no knock-outs tonight.

I must say, though: I thought both guys did better than their presidential counterparts. I certainly got the feeling tonight that Cheney could crush Kerry and Edwards could crush Bush if those debates ever took place.
