The fact that he's taking it so damn seriously is why it works. The rest of the album is mostly the same joke that gets tired pretty quick, but "Wonderwall" has this bizarre quality where it seems as though it was always a Paul Anka easy-listening swing song. It works way better that way than as, say, an Oasis song.
As for the Hall of Fame, my initial intention was to aim contemporary, and have actually gotten a much higher percentage of classic artists than I really wanted (although every single one of them was deserving). The rule, incidentally, is that ten years must have passed since the release of their first album. Ben Folds Five's eponymous debut was in 1995, therefore, they qualify. They were also one of the first "Breakthrough Artist" winners, and this is the 10th annual version of the awards, so I really couldn't resist.
And as for "When The President Talks To God", since when I do need more than a bunch of empty putdowns and caricatures?
"That's my problem - I'm too frank. That's why my mother shoved me down the stairs. But then she is fat."
BEST COVER SONG/PARODY OF THE YEAR: *"Wonderwall" - PAUL ANKA (should have been It's My Life by Anka)
MOST OVERPLAYED SONG: *"Sugar, We're Going Down" - FALL OUT BOY
COMPILATION/SOUNDTRACK OF THE YEAR: *"Stubbs The Zombie" soundtrack (Rogue Wave's version of "Everyday" is beautiful)
WORST MUSIC VIDEO OF THE YEAR: *"My Humps" - THE BLACK-EYED PEAS (this is the worst thing ever done by humans.)
MUSIC VIDEO OF THE YEAR: *"The Denial Twist" - THE WHITE STRIPES
WORST SONG OF THE YEAR: *"My Humps" - THE BLACK-EYED PEAS (wow what an awful year for music.)
BEST NONSINGLE OF THE YEAR: *"The Mariner's Revenge Song" - THE DECEMBERISTS
BEST SINGLE OF THE YEAR: *"My Doorbell" - THE WHITE STRIPES
WORST ARTIST OF THE YEAR: *GWEN STEFANI (R. Kelly did "trapped in the closet" which is the monumental musical accomplishment of this era. How could he be on this list?)
ARTIST OF THE YEAR: *KANYE WEST
WORST ALBUM OF THE YEAR: *"Love Angel Music Baby" - GWEN STEFANI (I kind of like "Don't Lie" of the BEP album. Gwen however...this album has no redeeming features)
ALBUM OF THE YEAR: *"Late Registration" - KANYE WEST (I think I might agree overall with this one. Though the Antony & the Johnsons album, "Takk" by Sigur Ros, and the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah albums were close)
HALL OF FAME: *BOB MARLEY and the WAILERS (Last year: 1st) *WILLIE NELSON (Last year: N/A) *THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS (Last year: 3rd)
I'll abstain from the Breakthrough Artist category, as I'm not familiar with any of the nominees.
