This is simply brutal.

From the new 2/21/05 Observer:

Vince's injury was actually a lot more detailed then we had it. Vince tore both quad tendons in both his right and left leg, so he's basically immobile for a while. He tore his right quad in the ring when it collapsed as he took the step into the Royal Rumble that everyone saw after smashing his knee on the ring apron. He was being helped into the back, and Vince has that image where he never wants the boys to see him looking "out of control" or weak, feeling it's an image killer. One of the most interesting stories regarding "Wrestling with Shadows" is, in the end, when the WWE was trying to get the movie squashed, and failed, but was being uncooperative, one of the last negotiations was they told producer Paul Jay they would give him whatever footage from the company he needs as long as part of the movie showing him limping coming out of the locker room with his eyes glazed after Bret Hart knocked him out and he twisted his ankle underneath him, was removed from the movie. How it relates to this, is Shane wanted to help support his dad's weight as he got helped out of the building. But when the boys saw him backstage, he refused to let anyone see him looking hurt, so he tried to walk on his own, putting weight on his left leg. In doing so, he tore that quad tendon as well.

I understand the rationale.

I mean, dealing with these massive guys (many with roid rage) for a living, Vince has to portray the ultimate tough guy to control them all. If half the roster sees him a some sort of weakling, or taking time off because of an injury, I'm sure they'd bring it up the next time they had some sort of setback.

I'm not saying that he needs to go to those extremes, but I certainly understand why he feels he has to.

That being said, it's a freaking torn quad for a 60-year-old man. Vince further injured himself thanks to his high-school locker room "gotta look tough" mentality. Nice work for a CEO.

I'm interested in selling my youngest daughter into slavery as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. She's a Georgetown sophomore, speaks fluent Italian, always cleared the table when it was her turn. What would a good price for her be? While thinking about that, can I ask another? My Chief of Staff Leo McGarry insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly says he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself or is it okay to call the police? Here's one that's really important because we've got a lot of sports fans in this town: touching the skin of a dead pig makes one unclean. Leviticus 11:7. If they promise to wear gloves, can the Washington Redskins still play football? Can Notre Dame? Can West Point? Does the whole town really have to be together to stone my brother John for planting different crops side by side? Can I burn my mother in a small family gathering for wearing garments made from two different threads? Think about those questions, would you? One last thing: while you may be mistaking this for your monthly meeting of the Ignorant Tight-Ass Club, in this building, when the President stands, nobody sits." --- President Jed Bartlett, The West Wing

I gotta go with The Canadian Bulldog's way of looking at it. You can call it a High School Mentality, but that's what everyone in the business has, so that's what he HAS to deal with, not what he chose to deal with. I also doubt he knew it was a torn quad. The tougher the guy, the more they tend to think that they can 'walk it off'. I'm sure he thought it was something that would be fine in a couple days.

It's not a case of having to look tough though. The guy doesn't go into meetings or even just casual talks with the wrestlers thinking of him as the "CEO of the Company". He goes into them with a good number of the guys thinking at least in part that "I'm a Big Strong Guy Who Could Bend People's Spines With One Hand. If I Can Bend This Guy Too Then I Don't Need to Listen To Him". Physical intimidation (going both ways) is something that probably comes up a helluva lot more in talks with his workers than it does in the Disney Corp. Although that might solve some of their problems.

I guess Vince knows better than I do what kind of image he has to show the wrestlers. But I don't see why he'd need to portray physical prowess to keep them in line when he can fire them or put them in the doghouse. I suppose he doesn't want a wrestler citing this indicent when they milk injuries, but unless that wrestler has A TORN QUAD he'd have no business making such a point. If anything, Vince's bravado only works against his gut-it-out message to the workers--he tried to tough out an injury and just made things worse.

Y'know, it took HHH eight months of constant physical therapy to recouperate from one torn quad. Vince has two, and at his age he can't possibly heal up at the same rate as Hunter. I suppose Vince can settle for regaining mobility whereas HHH had to get cleared to wrestle, but either way it could be at least a year before we see Vince up and around. And until then we may not see him at all, given his pride.

If I recall, didn't Vince get in a motorcycle accident of sorts back in 1998/1999 and had to use a wheelchair briefly, and then walked with a cane for a while? It was during the huge Austin/McMahon angle so maybe that explains why he still showed up hurt, but still, it was a very public showing of Vince in a weak state.

Not only that Helmsley was helped to the back and he's in at peak age and tip-top health. Vince has got himself some serious insecurities. I can understand not wanting to be Dick Vermil, but a torn quad is a torn quad.

Yeah, I thought of that right after I said Vince would refuse to appear on camera in a wheelchair. I can't remember, though, if they just covered for the injury by having Austin beat the hell out of him.

In '98, Vince was too integral to the main storylines to disappear for a few weeks. This time he's got a much lower profile, so I wonder if that will change things.

In the storyline Kane and the Undertaker were responsible for Vince's injury. They beat the hell outta him when he didn't give either of them the title after the PPV where the two of them pinned Austin at the same time.

Don't ask me why, but I VERY clearly remember them saying he was in a motorcycle accident and broke his tailbone. Not like it has anything to do with what we're talking about, but this is one thing I'm sure about.

I think that was before Fully Loaded 1999, the First Blood/End of an Era match between Austin and Undertaker.

Maybe its just me, but anytime I pay somebody hundreds of thousands of dollars, and they KNOW its my signature on the check, I dont have to LOOK TOUGH to them to let them know I am the boss.

But I'm pretty sure it wasnt always like that for him though. Actually, I bet he spent longer with it NOT being like that than he has with it being like that.

In that line of business, I can see why the boss would want to avoid looking weak. Not that I would go to the lengths he did to keep from looking weak, but I understand.

As a side note, who knew that favoring one leg over the other with the torn quad would cause the good quad to tear too?

Apparently everyone who thinks they could do Vince's job better than him knew... I'd also like to know if anyone knows the extent of Vince's injuries. Are they total or partial tears? He could be gone for as long as Triple H/Nash were, or back in a few months (although there's no rush as I don't think he had anything planned aside from some obvious WM duties).
