A source told FOXSports.com that Minnesota has traded quarterback Sage Rosenfels to the Giants, along with running back/punt returner Darius Reynaud, in exchange for an undisclosed pick in the 2011 NFL draft as well as a conditional pick in the 2012 draft.
The Giants had searched for a new backup since Jim Sorgi suffered a season-ending shoulder injury earlier in the preseason. Third-stringer Rhett Bomar, a 2009 fifth-round pick, proved incapable of handling the role when starting in place of the injured Manning (laceration).
A 10-year NFL veteran with 12 career starts, Rosenfels will provide New York with a veteran presence. Rosenfels was acquired by Minnesota via trade with Houston in 2009 and signed to a three-year, $9 million contract extension. But any chance of competing for a starting spot was derailed when Minnesota signed Brett Favre.
Rosenfels has remained mired in a third-string role in Minneapolis behind backup Tarvaris Jackson despite an outstanding preseason statistically. Rosenfels completed 60.8 percent of his passes with four touchdowns and no interceptions compared with Jackson, who posted a 46.2 completion percentage.
The Giants opted to trade for Rosenfels rather than pursue Arizona quarterback Matt Leinart, who is being shopped by the Cardinals.
Guess the Giants couldn't be conned into taking T-Jack. ;-)
If the Giants were willing to take a QB who was benched behind a guy they didn't want and let go (Warner) and then put on the bench by a guy who was cut to sign Jake Delhomme (Derek Anderson) I would have stopped being a fan.
Originally posted by Mike GarofaloOn Friday, it seemed as if the Giants were on the verge of accepting Rhett Bomar as their backup quarterback. One day and a trade for Sage Rosenfels later, they're not even going to keep him on the roster.
Bomar, the Giants' fifth-round pick last season, has been informed he'll be waived by the team Saturday, according to someone informed of the transaction. The person requested anonymity because the team hasn't released their list of cuts.
Bomar is eligible for the practice squad if he clears waivers.
