So Al Sharpton, a bunch of New York City Democrats, and a bunch of whiners in Peurto Rico piss and moan to get the Navy to stop training down on Vieques. Hell, Sharpton even goes on a state sponsored diet while he's down there. Clinton decides that the Navy has to be out by May 2003.
Once we are forced to stop training there, there will be no reason to keep the Roosevelt Roads naval base open in PR. The base will most likely close up, and naval personel moved out. And as the base disappears so to will the $250 million the base pumps into the economy. Hah hah! Whiney bastards want us out, fine, we'll leave and take our cool cash with us.
I also found this liittle gem: viequessupport.org
The whiners are going to stage a protest in NYC this Monday to protest the navy trainig there. Here's some quotes: "The people there have suffered the economic, health and environmental consequences of bombings and military maneuvers..."
" The U.S. Navy must leave Vieques, begin a process of decontamination, issue reparations and return the land to the people. Enough is enough! Join others on January 13th to demand an end to injustice."
Economic consequences?! Reparations?! How about that $250 million a year you've been getting!

Trust me Bizzle Im in the Navy and Ive spent a good amount of time down in PR, and the people there are quite ready to send us and our 250 million dollars packing. They feel plain and simple that they are sick of us polluting their water and dropping bombs on the soil.If it means that they lose our input into the economy then so be it. And theyre a little exaggeration going on, Roosy Roads is on the far eastern part of the island, its not like if they close the base the the island of Puerto Rico is doomed. Plus the Navy is really just making vague threats, but theres probably no way that they would close the Roosevelt Roads base completely, thats base has value to the Navy beyond the Range at Vieques.
Plus think of it like this... How would you feel about the Navy dropping bombs in your backyard? making where you live a cancer cluster? Is it worth what they pump into the economy?

| #3 Posted on 11.1.03 1052.39 | In Charleston SC one of the city's biggest empoyer the Navy Shipyard closed. Every one knew at least one person who lost their job. Today its old news we still have a good economy and lots of good jobs available. Vieques knew this was coming and they like us have a plan this will so not affect them.

| #4 Posted on 11.1.03 1843.07 | Instant Rating: 6.73 | There is no "we're taking our money back from them." Vieques IS we. They are part of the United States (as are, I might add, those New York City Democrats). I don't understand how you see this as punishing some bastard stepchild.
The difference is that in, say, Mississippi, they have actual representatives and Senators that can get them all sorts of military pork and jobs for their area, while Puerto Rico, not having said reprentation, has to trade getting bombed for said military pork and jobs.

| #5 Posted on 11.1.03 1933.18 | While I agree with you in principal Moe, your argument is flawed by the fact that Puerto Rico has denied itself representation by continually voting against becoming the 51st state. But I'm happy for them to have gotten rid of the bombing, as I know I would be unhappy with it if I lived in Puerto Rico.
