I can't believe it. I fell ass-backwards into a copy of this game this morning, in Kay-Bee Toys of all places. (Still haven't found that Hurricane Helms action figure...)

This'll be brief, because I want to get back to it, but, yeah, if you didn't like GTAIII, you won't like this. But, if you didn't like GTAIII, I can't imagine you even being interested in this, so that seems like a moot point.

Anyway, I steal my first car and the politics radio station is on, talking to Congressman Shrub (heh), and I flip around the dial for a bit and discover the most kickass thing that no one's mentioned yet -- the New Wave station includes "Obsession" by Animotion - better known (to me, at least) as "Theme from Saturday Night's Main Event"!!!

That's enough for me, I can quit right there and be satisfied with the entire gaming experience.

Something tells me that you're a wrestling smart-fan...

*Must... show... disdain... for... popular... trends!*

It'd be funny if you read some of my wrestling posts...
(Psst: I'm usually the only one defending the unpopular parts of the WWE. Oh, but then I'm rebelling against the popular opinion that the WWE sucks...Oh, you got me! Eh. Maybe I just have opinions..)

Then again, I lurve pop culture, and typically enjoy most things that come from it (music, movies, etc). So I must be a mindless sheep!!!

Wait...wait...wait. I KNOW! I actually didn't enjoy this game as much as I "should have" and am expressing dissenting opinion and that's WRONG WRONG WRONG. Ok. Got it.

People enjoy this game for reasons other than "Well, everybody else does, so I guess I should too." Some, maybe even most, find the game highly entertaining. Are they right? Who cares! It has a legitimate following because it's a fun, innovative game. Not because it's riding a trendy wave of popularity.

Fine. But what I'm saying is that while the game IS fun, it's neither the funnest nor the best thing I've ever played. The hype machine would have me believe that it is. I'm typically very critical of any sort of hype, and as it is, I'd like to see that the hype is true.

For me it wasn't. I guess I just wanted to offer up to people looking for opinions about whether or not to buy the game, that I didn't think it was a hell of a lot better than the first game. It's still fun, but it's not a revelation to the gaming industry. But I guess offering that opinion is wrong? Hmmm... I guess I can't both like it and not feel that it's anything special.

Hype is for those who need it.

Which apparently I didn't, because I went out and got it, despite not looking forward to it. My opinion is unchanged. I enjoy it, but I don't care for it.

I was too, then I decided not to fall in for the hype.

Yeah. I'm hype mad. Well...I actually haven't read tons and tons of hype for it. But it's a wrestling game, so...you know. I'm sure you'll enjoy it just fine. Hype or no :).

You're not kidding. It carries very little weight with me because it seems that you dislike the game because others like it so much.

And I haven't yet heard here that this is "God's gift to gaming". What I have heard is "Wow! This is a kick-ass game!".

Umm...of course I did say that I DID like it. Just not as much as I liked the first game. The novelty has worn off for me. A caveat if you will, for people who weren't completely enthralled with the first game that this was more of the same. Not bad if you're still into it, but grating if you aren't.

Maybe nobody HAS said that it's God's gift to gaming, but my original point is that, I don't think it's all that kick ass of a game. It's fun and all, just like the first one was fun. But other games are fun too. NCAA is fun. It sees more play that GTA: VC in my Playstation. *Shrugs* I'm just saying.

Then again, you said that my thoughts carry little weight for you. Umm...I don't suppose they would seeing as you disagree with them. No, I'm not saying that I dislike (which I don't) the game because others are saying that they do. Otherwise I'd be jumping all over every one of these threads and saying that. I'm just saying that now that I've bought and played it, it's left me kind of "Eh" to the whole thing. If I'd enjoyed it, I'd join the choir in singing it's praises.

At least, I've played it first.

Vroom! Vroom!

Gack. Anyone seen any health powerups around here? Prostitutes? Anything?

Since everyone else is doing it (ok, not EVERYONE, but...)

here's why i liked GTAIII and VC

it's an open, free form game. non-linear.

i like being able to take a mission, or maybe try some stunts, or just cruising around to release some stress.

i can basically do what i want when i want, and i love games like these. i actually spend more time doing side stuff or cruising around the city than actually trying/doing missions....

hours and hours of play...but w/ gta III, i didn't really play it after beating it, other than to get some of the side stuff done in the 3rd island [cab, fire, ambulance]

Well, I'm 38% through the game.

For those who say that GTAVC is too much like GTA3, I can tell you this: The entire play dynamic changes after you kill this certain guy and take over his operation. I'll leave it at that to avoid spoilers.

That's about where I am now. I'm a little lower in %, as I haven't been seeking out Unique Jumps, (intentionally) collecting Hidden Packages or doing Rampages yet.

It's a nice feeling to have the city at your disposal and actively seek out opportunities, instead of having all the missions come to you...

I really want to get the game but I suck ass at any game not sports/ wrestling related. Would the game be any fun for a gaming retard like myself...basically is there a good easy mode on it?

Well, BigDaddyLoco...

There is only one difficulty mode in GTA: Vice City. But I'd say a lot of one's success in the game involves fully understanding your objectives, strategically choosing your weapons, and having a good idea where everything is in the city.

Not to mention shooting just about everything that moves, on occasion. LOL...

I'm now halfway to 100%, and I've noticed that the game's missions require a lot more advance thought than those of GTAIII. Some of them are accomplished by trial and error-- select a strategy, and if it doesn't work, try another one. A good example of this (in a non-spoiler format) is the mission where you have to save one of your friends who's being beaten up and is under heavy guard. Sheer speed won't help you, because you'll never make it past all of them. Taking time to shoot everybody will take too much time, and they'll have beaten your friend to death by the time you reach him. You have to find a workable middle ground, and that's the trick. Hell of a fun mission, though-- indeed, the missions in Vice City tend to be more fun and involving than those in GTAIII.

The freedom in Vice City is much-improved from GTAIII, as well. You can now rob stores, deliver pizzas and “ice cream”, and eventually buy property which will unlock new missions. Accomplish each mission associated with a certain property, and that property will begin making money for you.

So, yeah... I recommend that anyone old enough to buy it should do so.

I'm just going to add that it really earns it's M rating this time around and it should have gotten an AO rating...according to my stats, it has sucked away 27 hours from my life...and it was all fun

Riki,

While Vice City admittedly stretches the definition of an M-rating, it appears that a game will not be rated AO unless it actually contains graphic scenes of sexual intercourse.

I finished the storyline over the weekend (I'm at just under 60% complete overall)... without spoiling anything major, suffice it to say that the final mission is nasty but satisfying, and there's still plenty to do once the main plotline is complete.

On the difficulty question... There are certain missions that may be very difficult until you work out the "trick" needed to succeed (Four Iron, Sir Yes Sir, Dirty Lickin's, Trojan Voodoo, and Death Row come to mind). Others aren't that complicated, but require a lot of practice to master the skills involved (most of the boat/race missions, Phnom Penh '86). And still others are damn near impossible (The Driver, which is pathologically difficult).

That said, I'd still encourage novices to give it a try, because you only need to complete any particular mission ONCE. Practice the difficult missions, keep trying, and save immediately after you get lucky and complete them.

And if you're stuck on a mission, you can have lots of fun doing other things. Look for hidden packages, rampages and unique jumps. Rob stores, mug pedestrians and take on odd jobs to build up cash. See how ludicrously you can drive, crash and mangle Vice City's vehicles. Do some of the numerous side missions. Get the cops chasing you (intentionally) and practice avoiding them for extended periods of time, which is vital on many missions. Just generally go nuts and terrorize the locals. What more could you want?

You sound just like me and I love GTA3 and Vice City. My advice would to be to play it with someone who is generally more into games like that. They can give you tips on how to use weapons and look for things that would normally trip up a novice non-sports gamer. I also bought the guide which has been very helpful in going from mission-to-mission because that is the kind of thing that is definitely not intuitive for me.

I played Metal Gear Solid 2 in the store and was stoked to buy it, then I got bored with it after about a week. The GTAs have more than held my attention, so I'd say you'll be very happy with either one.

It's a fine line. I think I know what scenes you're referring to, and the saving grace is that the naughty bits themselves are off-camera. Actions are implied to the point of being obvious, but they're not _graphically_ displayed (i.e. much like the Playboy Channel, the camera stays away from the raunchier angles, and cuts away before things get too interesting). The most obvious scene in the game is played for humor value, not for titillation purposes.

Apart from that, it's mostly innuendo (the bouncing-car effect, Mercedes's antics) or simple naughtiness (the searchlight, the side of one Downtown building at night, and certain revelations about Congressman Shrub). As a package, the game's not as revealing as even a bad Cinemax soft-core flick.

What surprised me on the day of the release, is that I saw 2 different parents trying to find a copy of it for their children who couldn't have been any more than 13~14 years old. Did they KNOW what the game had in it?

100% Complete! Thank you God and Rockstar! And all I got to show for it is this lousy T-shirt (hint, hint). Now with WWE Smackdown, Metroid Prime, and Splinter Cell all coming next week. It will be another year before I post here again
*EDIT* Oh yeah, Thanks, Power That Be for finally creating a Video Game folder.

I'm still at 55%, but yesterday afternoon I accomplished the “Keep Your Friends Close...” mission, taking over Vice City once and for all.

I did it without the use of any strategy guides or cheat codes.

Riki,

Well... it was difficult. I wouldn't want to call it “a bitch”, because that might give the impression that I didn't enjoy myself, when nothing could be farther from the truth.

Some of the strategies I used to complete certain missions were borderline cheating (for example, leaving a mission area completely to restock my weapons, health and armor and continue where I left off), but I'm happy with myself because I didn't use any codes or strategy guides. Yay for me! LOL...

Anybody know if there are any secret missions to unlock after you've already beaten the game? I got a few cell-phone calls shortly after the “Keep Your Friends Close...” mission, but so far nothing's come of them...
