A day late on this one but Congrats to the City of Vancouver for their selection as host city in 2010. Hopefully I will get to attend. I still remember going to Lake Placid back in 1980.

Though some say this now hurts NYC in their bid for the 2012 Summer Olympics, I don't think it does. There have been consecutive games on the same continent before and there will be in the near future (Athens in '04 & Turin in '06). It's also another 2 years before the decision is made and a lot of things can happen between now & then to influence the voters.

It does hurt NYC, just in the same way that Salzburg would have hurt all of the European cities(hence Pyongchang damn near winning the thing on the first ballot; the Europeans bidding in 2012 wanted to get them out of Europe for their own purposes except Italy who was looking for the 2016 Summer Games anyway).

A Vancouver games gives the Europeans a convenient excuse to not vote for NYC; the 9-11 Sentiment just won't exist when they take the vote.

Incidentally, these are the cities(thanks GamesBids.com) bidding against NYC

Abuja, Nigeria(rumoured)
Cairo(rumoured)
Havana
Hyderabad OR New Delhi, India
Istanbul
Leipzig
London
Madrid
Milan
Moscow
Paris
Rio de Janeiro OR Sao Paulo, Brazil
Stockholm(rumoured)
Toronto
Warsaw

Toronto certainly will not be bidding now that the games are in Vancouver in 2010.

Sports radio in T.O. was certainly celebrating that last night. They have been very vocal about NOT wanting the Olympics here, so they were very pleased that Vancouver won...

Which station from Toronto was doing this? Argh.

You know, I know we get a lot of good stuff here in TO, but I do think we're due from an Olympic games eventually. But now that Vancouver scored it, probably won't happen till I'm old and grey.

The FAN 590. Most of all, Bob McCowan. Everyone who phoned in to Prime Time Sports last night was cheering the fact the the 'Couv got the games and Toronto won't in the near future...

I don't think a Toronto bid would at this point survive a plebiscite vote like they had in Vancouver.

I have heard through media that apparently Toronto never stood a snowball's chance in hell of getting 2008, than Juan Antonio Samaranch had used his influence from day 1 to get the games to Beijing. Toronto was just strung along the whole way.

Toronto won't(and shouldn't) bid on 2012. As mentioned above, Salzburg's being eliminated on the first ballot yesterday shows that the IOC is fully intent on the summer games in 2012 going to a European city-London, Madrid, Paris...

I like Canada better for the winter games, anyway. We're a winter nation. So, most importantly, congratulations Vancouver/Whistler! I hope to get to that party in 7 years. I'm looking forward to an expanded Sea To Sky Highway.

It's very cool. However, I think I'd better leave for the border about December 2009 to get through in time. That is going to be nuts. They said western Washington will probably get about $200 million in revenue for the Olympics being so close, because it will be SOOOOOO expensive to be in and close to Vancouver during the Games.

On the radio here yesterday they said at the Salt Lake City Games people were staying in Boise and flying into Salt Lake via Horizon Air everyday because it was cheaper than staying closer.

i would be willing to sublet my apartment for 16 days if anyone was willing to stay in seattle and fly to vancouver. Myself? I will probably stay away because a) winter sports just don't interest me and b) that line at the border is bad enough right now, I shudder to think of what it will be like when even more people are trying to cross.

Hm.... graduated by 2007... might be out on the West Coast.... am I crazy enough to try and get up there? Yeah, probably.

Congrats, 'Couver.

(And krakken, do you know already you'll be in that apartment in 6 1/2 to 7 years? 2010 is quite a long ways away, y'know.)

I think we can bet the farm on the 2012 summer games going to either London or Paris. If the IOC wanted to prove they're unbiased (BWA HA HA HA HA) they'd give those games to Rio or Sao Paulo so a South American country would get a shot.

In the meantime, Canadian Olympics, baby! Whoo!

Stewie: Ahahaha. Oh God, that's funny. That's really funny. You write your own material? Do you? Because that is so fresh. 'You are the weakest link. Goodbye!' You know I've never heard anyone make that joke before. You're the first. I've never heard anyone reference that outside program before. Because that's what she says on the show, right? Hmmm? 'You are the weakest link. Goodbye!' And ye...ye..yet you've taken it and....and used it out of context to insult me in this everyday situation. What a clever, smart girl you must be. To come up with a joke like that all by yourself. Mmmmm...that's so fresh too. Any Titanic jokes you want to throw at me as long as we're hitting these phenomena at the height of their popularity. Mmmm? Cuz i'm here God you're so funny!

I used to live in Vancouver, and my friends still get on my case for always talking about how freakin' fantastic it was there. So it was nice to come into work this morning and be bombarded by emails from my friends saying "Wow... I guess other people think it's just as great as you say it is."

I might make it up... I've still got a good number of friends there...

I think the coolest part about getting the games here is the plan to put the Gold medal Hockey game inside of BC Place, which is a football dome, infront of 50,000+ fans.

Now that would be an unbelievable experience especially if Canada were to make it to the gold medal game...

The sweet thing is that I'm going to film school in Vancouver in a year or two, so I'll probably still be in or around Vancouver for the Olympics. Hell, even if I'm not...I am *SO* going to the Olympics anyways. Hell, it was awesome to grow up in Calgary during the Olympics. Awesome time.

Not meaning to rain on anyone's parade....but WHY, oh why must Canada always try for the Olympics? I really don't understand Canada's desire to be in the spotlight 24/7.

Oh yeah, if the Olympics are all about "amateur" athletics, then why are NHL and NBA players involved? That's ridiculous.

Chalk one up for someone who isn't excited aboot the Olympics.

Question their amateur status all you want, but I am so much more stoked about NHL players in the Olympics than I am about junior players. The quality of play is just so much higher; if the NHL were smart, they'd adopt international rules and ice surfaces, but then again, that would (gasp!) actually make the game interesting, and we can't have that.

And to echo FuelInjected, nothing would top 50000 fans in BC Place cheering on a Canadian team in a gold medal game. Nothing beats that home-ice advantage.

Q: If you could have one superpower -- the strength of 100 men, invisibility, or the ability to fly -- which would you choose and why?

Michael Vick: Oh man, invisibility. If I was in a bad situation or something or I said something or you know, caught with two girls I could just disappear. I could be gone just like that -- no trouble.

Not having read any of the Jack Ryan books in a while, you're comments on the continuity do little to make me want to jump back in. It sounds to me like by making Jack Ryan Jr. the protagonist (and a twenty-something protagonist, at that)
