This came out a few days ago so I thought I'd post it. I see no obvious errors, some teams could move up or down a little, but nothing egregious. As a Mizzou fan, I still can't believe I'm seeing my team ranked this high. As a Mizzou fan there's always that little part of me that expects them to fall flat on their faces. Anywho, let the college football seasons arguments about which conference is best/worst, which teams are overrated/underrated, and general bitching about the BCS commence!

I'm generally not a big college football guy, but I wouldn't mind being at the Ed Jones Dome for the Border War game this year. Too bad it's in such a sterile environment.

It's fine, but if I'm making a poll before the season I'm doing it based on where I think they'll finish and Georgia is not number one. They may be awesome, but I just don't see them getting through that schedule to a title game.

USC will probably have a slightly easier time this year than last so that makes sense, as does Ohio State. No way I have Florida in the top ten until they show me something other than Tebow.

LSU has some big questions too but it's safe to say they'll be good anyway. But West Virginia? I know they have White back, and in my view Noel is an upgrade from Slaton, but I don't trust that team at all with a crappy new coach.

I think Texas will challenge OU for Big 12 honors, with Muschamp making a big difference for that defense. Virginia Tech I don't think is going to be as good as some people, considering their RB situation.

And Michigan in the top 25? Yeah, no.

.....AHAHAHAHAHAHA! BAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh, man, that is priceless. As if we needed more proof that preseason polls are a joke, there it is.

Why? I'll explain while also defending Michigan's position (which, look at the teams under 24. If you truly think Michigan would lose to Fresno State, you need to start following another sport.) I'm going to go over each game on Michigan's schedule and mark it as "Win", "Loss", or "Toss-Up" along with a little blurb explaining why:

Utah - Win. Utah's team is NOT the Utah of Urban Meyer. Those yelling about Michigan losing it's opener once again are either those ignorant of the sport, or those who WANT Michigan to lose its opener (Buckeye fans, etc). The uncertainties are on offense, NOT defense and Utah won't be able to do much.

Miami (Ohio) - Win. The Redhawks simply do not have the talent or coaching to be able to match with any Big Ten team outside of Minnesota or Northwestern.

At Notre Dame - Toss Up. It's a rivalry game, which naturally throws everything into question, but it's also a revenge game for Notre Dame...the talent level might be more equal...and we don't know exactly how well or poorly Michigan's offense is going to play yet or how much better Notre Dame is this year. A toss-up.

Wisconsin - Loss. Wisconsin won't be experiencing that severe of a dropoff from last year, and they are always contenders. Unless Michigan starts the season strong the Badgers should be able to eke out a win.

Illinois - Win. Most overrated team EVER. If this was still Carr's regime, it might be a close game. But look at last year: explosive running back, explosive QB. The spread. In Illinois. All the ingredients were there for them on their own team, and their opposition was a deflated Michigan team whose coaching/conditioning had been proven completely vulnerable against the spread and such speedy talent. Yet Michigan still won THAT game. Now with this year being under Rich-Rod (who practically invented the spread), in Ann Arbor, with said running back gone? All because an overconfident and overrated Ohio State team laid an egg in their own backyard? Please. Illinois will not win. Nor will they meet preseason expectations. They will crash, burn, and flame out.

Toledo - Win. Take my comments about Miami, only remove the exceptions.

At Penn State - Loss. No way will the Nittany Lions...in Happy Valley, in what will probably be Joe Pa's last year, against a questionable Michigan team, allow their mini-curse against the Wolverines to continue.

Michigan State - Toss Up. Another rivalry game, with the ensuing unpredictability. You have a rising Spartan team, but then you have their poor history in Ann Arbor. Too many questions, no predictable outcome, and it'll be one fiercely contested and great game.

At Purdue - Win. Purdue is a heavier, slower version of Illinois. They won't be able to get a win against Michigan unless the wheels are really off the Wolverine team at this point.

At Minnesota - Win. Guess what other team lost to a 1AA school last year? These guys.

Northwestern - Win. Like Purdue, they are Illinois lite. Unlike Purdue, they do have some speed. Like Purdue, they won't come close to beating Michigan.

At Ohio State - Loss. This isn't the year to turn the tables, not yet. Rich-Rod'll be fired up but the talent and knowledge of his system by the players won't be there yet. One more year.

7-3 with two toss-ups. That is still a bowl eligible record, and that's all that matters this year: keep the bowl streak alive. The rest is rebuilding and creating the foundation for the new Michigan program.

Considering the quarterback problems for LSU, I'm going on the ledge and taking Appalachian State outright to win in Death Valley Week 1.
ABC has a nice 2 vs. 3 match-up early in the season with Ohio State vs. USC. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the first matchup between these teams during this run, which is weird because of the Rose Bowl tradition.
I guess Spurrier has no vote this year.
Since I think of Georgia as a higher form of Clemson, which is a higher form of Michigan State, I know they will screw up. Since the Arizona State game is their longest trip since 1960, I'll take that as the game they give away.
I'm not a Colt McCoy fan, so I'll be down on Texas. And, though everyone thinks this will be their breakthrough season, I still think Texas Tech is a fraud team.
Anyone else remember the last time Miami (FL) didn't receive any votes when they were not on probation?

I may need to start following another sport, because in case you haven't noticed Fresno State has made a living pulling off upsets like that. They aren't exactly a joke and I have a lot of questions about what Michigan will be this season. I don't think they'll be horrific, but major changes like that on offense after losing some key players is a bigger deal than you're making it out to be.

And if Michigan was playing at Utah I would not be suprised to see a close game. Utah plays pretty good defense too.

I would consider seven wins for Michigan to be a good season. I would not have them as a top 25 team at this point.

As for Illinois, I think they lost a lot with their RB, but Zook has been a recruiting monster for them as expected so they do have a lot more talent than they used to. Expecting them to fall off the map is a bit crazy with that increase in talent level, even if most of it is still young.

And you'll note I don't give Michigan more than 7 wins and totally agree with the idea that that would be a good season for them. But acting as if a rebuilding year is some kind of incredible debacle waiting to happen is ludicrous.

Fresno State's a nice little team. But they have trouble just beating Boise in their own conference, let alone tackling powers from power conferences.

Not an Illinois fan. A guy who gets paid to cover the team, and has for over twenty years.

And your comment on Ron Zook's recruiting puts you in the John L. Smith/Charlie Weis category of those whiners who should be ignored at all costs.

Boise has been pretty good themselves the past couple of years. Even beat a big team from a power conference and such. I'm just saying if I were Michigan I would be glad that team is not on my schedule this season.

But I think most people, other than CNNSI, aren't calling for a total meltdown from Michigan but at the same time it's just as out there to say they'll be a top 25 team this year. Could happen, but not likely.

By the way, here's SI's preseason poll which is just kinda retarded.

Boise dropped off when Hawkins left as coach. They were definitely on a path to become a Louisville/West Virginia type, but now they're just involved in a three-way dance of mediocrity with Fresno and Hawaii. They're good teams for what they are, and Boise's miraculous win over Oklahoma does show they belong on this level. But that talent is gone, those sets of circumstances don't come around every day, and either way this only applies to Boise. Not Fresno State, who is certainly on the losing end of their rivalry with the Broncos.

Lets see: horrible facilities, horrible program in both tradition and past performance, unappealing campus, Zook's prior history of "character-issue" recruiting at Florida, the talent level of recruits is historically unprecedented in Illinois history. But what he's done is totally legit. Ok.

It won't matter anyways, Zook's never performed well with his ill-gotten recruits in the first place. Just ask Florida why he got the boot despite his recruiting horde.

Indeed.

Though I will say that town and campus are pretty crappy. Don't know how Zook gets kids there, but he's always been good at that and I don't recall any major infractions coming to light after he left. In fact all I remember is them winning a national title with his kids.

Now Urban Meyer on the other hand, that dude pulls every dirty trick in the book. I like how he just let this kid back on the team that was busted first for firing an AK into the air at a night club last year, then for pot while on probation this year but the DA didn't notice in time to charge him. The DA was like, oops we missed that one. Instead he's back on the field!

I mean every school skirts the lines, but that story just amazed me. Especially with all Meyer's talk about running a tight ship and not putting up with crap like that.

So, wait, the Michigan fan's point was that Michigan could go 7-5, and this is his DEFENSE for saying Michigan should be in the top 25, ahead of Fresno who will probably win 10 games?

And wait, Fresno has trouble beating teams in a power conference? Really?

And Michigan not only lost to Appalachian State (in a game that UM fans will NEVER live down and why posts like "Fresno would never beat Michigan" are even more stupid and funny now), but they lost a few more games last year too.

I fail to see the entire point of the Michigan fan's rant. Congrats, you might beat Miami (OH) and Toledo as long as they don't run the spread, pat yourselves on the back.

"At Minnesota - Win. Guess what other team lost to a 1AA school last year? These guys."

Nine FBS teams lost to FCS teams last year. Anyone who doesn't know this and still calls the FCS by its old name is IGNORANT OF THE GAME.

That being said, I see three overrated teams in this poll, but that'll work itself over due time: Clemson, Kansas, and Arizona State. They'd all still beat Michigan, though.

Finally, the top choice is a joke but that's nothing new. Can someone explain to me what Georgia has done to deserve all this hype?

Georgia was the hottest team towards the end of last season and the last time anyone saw them they were absolutely destroying Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl. I think talent wise they are Top 5, but, until they prove otherwise, they are Georgia and they'll screw up.
But, if they don't have Georgia #1, who is? A USC team that has shown flaws the last 2 seasons when they have controlled their own destiny? Ohio State which has been knocked around in the last 2 national title games? (I wouldn't mind Georgia being #3 behind Ohio State/USC so that it would be a 1 vs. 2 game rather than 2 vs. 3, but that is just for build-up.) Florida that lost the Citrus Bowl? Oklahoma? Missouri? Only probable benefit to being #1 early is if you get picked off you don't drop as far and you can possibly jump others in a 1 loss bunch for the title game.
Call me ignorant of the game, but it will always be Division 1 and Division 1AA to me, or at least until they come up with better names.

Yes, the new division names are retarded and I never use them.

And Arizona State overrated at 16? I'm not sure I agree with that one. In fact I'm pretty sure I don't. I see them continuing to improve this season.

However I did just spend the weekend with a Kansas diehard and even he knows they won't be as good this year as last, mostly due to a schedule that forces them to actually play good teams during the regular season.

Clemson I think is ranked high for a few reasons. Yes they always screw up the big game, but where's the big game on their ACC schedule this year? Miami...hahahaha. FSU...eh maybe. Virginia Tech...probably not. Boston College..nope. Georgia Tech....not a chance. UNC...year or two away. Most of the teams in the ACC are going to be down a bit(yes more than last year if you can believe that) which means if Clemson, who's stocked with talent, can win out in the ACC they'd likely get the national title shot. At the very least they'd have a nice record, BCS game, and high ranking so it makes sense to me. Until they lose to Duke or something.

Clemson can have all the talent in the world, but the kicking game has shown through the years that it will cost Clemson MINIMUM 1 and probably 2 games. Va. Tech isn't on the schedule, so I can't write that in as the game special teams will cost Clemson. The Clemson schedule
