Anyone ever consider that the reason Jericho had the two belts was because of his character? He was already calling himself a living legend and larger than life. What better way to act like a dick than to parade not just one, but two championship belts?

Granted, that goes against the mentality of the brainwashed masses who must endlessly chant "Jericho looks like a fool" and "Jericho looks weak". For a net favorite, Y2J gets trashed more online than he does on TV.

I liked having the two belts simply because you literally had the history of two leagues, and all their champions, right there in front of you to see. I liked the fact that that meant the guy right there was, in theory, champion of both WCW and WWF, and I know he still is in theory, but I doubt the ingredients of the new belt will be referred to for much longer. Of course, it was probably sign posted that the WCW belt would be phased out as soon as "Undisputed World Champion" became "Undisputed WWF Champion" in promos and the like. I guess what I'm saying is I don't understand the decision to call the belt the Undisputed WWF belt other than to eliminate the WCW belts name, after all, prior to the Unification, no-one disputed that Austin was the real WWF champion, it was about who was the real champion of the world. Having the two belts was just more impressive.

Now, finally I guess, WCW really is officially dead and gone forever and that's a little sad.

Tragic, I was thinking that too, that Jericho would refuse to give them up.

It does make sense to merge the belts if they aren't going to be split up.
Yes the history might not be there right in front of you, but that history would have been forgotten/blurred anyways.

I can assume it being quite annoying to walk around with those two belts (as you would always have Internet folks going 'Wrestler X held the WWF title up more prominently. They are burrying the WCW legacy) and at least they had the decency to make a new one instead of retire the wcw or wwf belt.

Also, i can see the whole 'undisputed' thing disappearing now. As said, nobody disputes the championship itself, the wwf still exists and wcw doesn't. It does make sense, it just sucks for those that remember the glory days of nwa/wcw..

What used to really intrigue in the old days was the politics behind the naming of the belts.

WWF simply called itself the WWF championship belt.
It DID NOT call itself a WORLD title or a heavyweight belt.
Just the fact that it was the WWF championship belt was supposed to mean something. And it did. That belt didn't have to justify itself by calling itself a World title. I guess the fact that the WWWF had for a time accepted the supremacy of the NWA belt also has something to do with this. Now< I guess they were turning around and saying "t doesn't matter what we call it. THIS belt is the most important belt in wrestling!"

On the other hand, we had

the WCW belt referred to as the "World Heavyweight Title"

Note that there is no reference to WCW

This was to try and imply that it was bigger than a mere company's belt. A succesful attempt to link it to the 50 year legacy of the NWA world title.

The inclusion of the word Heavyweight. Another attempt to increase its appeal. Boxing doesn't have mere champions. It has Heavyweight champions. And by god, we are old school enough to have heavyweight champions of the world!

I guess I don't really understand why we have to have a conspiracy theory surrounding the Title Belt.

Monday was the beginning of a new era. Why not have a fresh, new title belt?

I fail to see how any of this relates to the Jericho glass-ceiling, H}{H backstage pull stuff that runs rampant on the Net.

I thought unifying the belts was the beginning of a new era. If you can't see the H desperately trying to recapture his face heat from the gravitational pull of the Hulkster, you're not paying attention...
Jericho pins the top two guys in the promotion and wins both world titles. Ceremonies held for him: 0.
Triple H beats Jericho in a singles match, and manages to retain the straps by beating up his ex-wife. I see, THAT's more of an accomplishment.
Have you even heard the name "Jericho" on TV, lately?

Well, no we haven't heard the name "Jericho" on TV lately. But it probably has something to do with the fact that Jericho is on Smackdown! and Raw was on this past Monday. Have you forgotten the two seperate promotions deal already? I'm sure you'll hear his name plenty come this Thursday night (just as we saw him on last week's Smackdown!).

And for those that wanna bitch about Jericho beating up Lita last week because that is a demotion- well, Austin was doing the exact same thing this time last year, and we all thought it was GREAT.

The WWF has given Jericho soooo much, and he's probably very happy. Some fans will never be able to see that

And where exactly on the show was this placed? I seem to remember Austin's beating of Lita being the main event, while I could count on one hand the number of TV main events Jericho had as champ. A nice way to know whether you're getting a main event push or not is whether your music cues up 10 minutes before the hour or 45 minutes before the hour.

I think that unifiying the belts was a very special moment that would carry the WWF until they fel the need to spilt the promotions or 'extend the brand.'

Everyone gets a rub off of someone else. The Rock had to lean on Hogan for face support after Mania. This is why we have mixed tags to a certain extent or run-ins and saves. It helps to clearly establish in the audience's minds whom their supposed to cheer and boo. H}{H doesn't have as much face heat as he'd like because his girlfriend booked his feud with Jericho in the most ineffective way possible, by making herself the center of attention.

Let's start with one point: I love Jericho AND H}{H. I've also written articles about H}{H and his alledged backstage pull. Search the archives if you feel the need, I won't rehash here.

BUT, Jericho was the first ever Undisputed Champion. No one can take that away from him. He worked his ass of during his championship run and sure, we'd love to see him in the main event right now, but I have confidence that he'll make his way back there in a short time. H}{H has been the best old-school heel in the past three years of TV. It's going to naturally take some for him to evolve into a face who does more than just crack dick jokes all day and do impersonations (wait--that's Rock's job).

Isn't it time to start collectively bashing the Undertaker again or something?

Oh Ruben, have you been watching WWF TV?
The Taker's been cutting killer promos and at least *trying* a little bit in the ring.
The H has done what since winning the title? Participated in a comedy match where he went over a woman.
I don't think the H has something against Jericho, per se, he just is convinced that he belongs as the focus of the promotion. Despite the fact that he isn't really over, and that he can't even cut a convincing promo anymore...not to mention work a physical match.
*Kevin Nash* has worked harder than the H over the past couple of months. You think about that.

If anything we should be collectively bashing Shane McMahon for not being on our TVs killing himself recently...

Just for the record:

The reason it's called the 'Undisputed Championship' is because the Championship is no longer disupted. WWF had it's Title belt, WCW had it's title belt. There was a dispute as to which champion was better than the other (or which company's belt was worth more), but now that we had the Unifying matchup, and Jericho took home both pieces of gold, there is no more dispute. There is ONE championship of the world, and it is undisupted (as long as you don't count non-American championships).

It constantly amazes me how bullshit theories about backstage pull pop up. HHH booked himself into a grand title ceremony because he wants to look bigger and better than Jericho. So what does he do to make it that much more impressive? He gets a crappy new belt that looks about a quarter as good as the two belts that Jericho carried around. THEN, rather than just making it a simple awarding ceremony, The Undertaker interrupts! What a crazy guy!

My Undertaker comment was dripping with sarcasm. I'm not big on emoticons like CRZ (;-)). I'll try to be more explicit next time.

I am now fully convinced that as long as the WWF is in business, and the words "undisputed champion" are uttered, people will not get over the fact that Jericho didn't look good enough as champ (because of bad booking) and that Triple H and his girlfriend are evil bastards who caused all of this. I have now accepted this as a fact of life.

From now on I shall just weep in silence over the fact that poor Chris Jericho, who rose up from being an under utilized hand in WCW (because of bad booking) to become a history making first ever undisputed WORLD champion that had to drop his title in the main event of Wrestlemania, is being cheated because he didn't get a shiny new belt. Poor schmuck had to carry around two cooler looking belts. They probably pay him minimum wage too.

As a side note, has anyone else noticed that whenever the writing in the WWF sucks, it's Stephanie's fault, but when soemthing is cool Heyman MUST have written it? I find that pretty funny.

So there's a new belt. Folks don't like it because:

1) It's smaller than either the WCW or WWF belts were. Though that makes the belt less impressive, it does make the belt easier to hoist and wear.

2) It lacks the detailing of the WCW belt. True - but the new belt looks more difficult to damage.

3) It lacks the history of the two separate belts. Also true - but I think every new belt has had that tag to work against. Time will tell. (At least they kept the cool nameplate of the WCW title.)

4) It's not as impressive as carrying two belts. However, as dMp mentioned, people were judging the significance of each title by how they were carried. Having one belt eliminates that problem.

It's perhaps not the greatest belt man (or woman ) has ever seen - but it fills the need. And they will probably continue to call it the "undisputed" title - it gives the title a little more significance, in a turn-of-the-century way.

Steph

P.S. Whatever happened to the "smoking skull" belt, anyhow?

I believe the last it was seen was the Rock throwing it into the river that Austin threw his IC belt into a year and a half previous.

The new belt has grown on me a bit since looking at some pics of it. I really like that they kept the nameplate idea. Just wish it was a tad bigger. It just doesn't scream "world title" at that size.

I think the WWF has commited to permenantly calling it the "undisputed" championship. That's what they call it everywhere, on TV and on stuff like wwftitlehistory.com. I think the "WWF championship" has finally been renamed.
