Meanwhile, anyone that bought the original game LESS THAN SIX MONTHS AGO looks to be out of luck.

Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 adds 12 new fighters

Capcom, masters of re-releasing games, have announced a new version of Marvel vs. Capcom just in time for San Diego Comic-Con. Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is in development for PS3 and Xbox 360 and will be available this November for $39.99--the same price it placed on its last remixed fighter, Super Street Fighter IV.

New to Ultimate MvC3 will be twelve new characters, including Strider, Ghost 'n Goblins villain Firebrand, Ghost Rider, and Hawkeye. "More characters will be revealed in the coming months," Capcom promises. In addition to the new characters, there will be eight new stages and new features "to improve the game's balance and online functionality," such as the new Spectator Mode.

So many thoughts here...

-There's no indication that this will be a downloadable add-on for the original game. In fact, the new HUD makes this look like an entirely new game, thus making the original a completely pointless purchase. Thanks for nothing, Capcom. I can't stick my middle finger up anymore than I can right now.
-The FIREBRAND? The biggest bastard in the history of video games is a PLAYABLE CHARACTER? I can't wait to beat the tar out of him.
-They captured Ghost Rider's Penance Stare BEAUTIFULLY! It's everything I wanted it to be and looks like the "good" equivalent of Akuma's Raging Demon hyper.
-To many, the inclusion of Strider will make all right with the world again.
-Hawkeye's hyper that has him shooting Ant Man/Giant Man at his opponent is one of the coolest hypers in the game.
-A leaked list has hit and it makes me a very happy men. (NOVA~!)

I'm incredibly annoyed, but let's face it. I'll buy anyway. I'm a sad, sad man.

I'm already on tap for Halo 1 Remixed and WWE '12.....so another November release makes me sad :(

Uncharted 3 comes out in November, too - so looks like spending money will be limited at best that month.

I never picked up MvC3 - is it good? How does it compare to MvC2?

The control scheme is a little different in MvC3. There are three attack buttons, one special attack button, and the two assist buttons. It takes some getting used to, but once you do, you'll be just fine.

The X Factor bonus is one of those things that can really turn the tide if you're low on health, but the skilled tournament-level fighters can ride an X Factor boost and wipe out an entire team of 3 in seconds.

MvC3 has some problems with the online interface and features about 30 fighters (compared to MvC2's 50+), but it's looking like that's getting addressed in this new game.

Honestly, if you've never bought MvC3, then $40 for Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is a pretty good deal.

The one thing I'm really curious about is, was this new version planned all along or did Capcom go back to the drawing board when Mortal Kombat came along and blew MvC3 out of the water?

My friends are boycotting Capcom because they're coming off as a little money-grubbing with this kinda thing (MvC3, UMvC3, what next UMvC3:Champion Edition? w.e) that was previously reserved for SF. More importantly cause they cancelled Megaman Legends 3 and then blamed the fans for it, then when asked to apologize they just said that's not what they meant.

All that aside, MvC3 is a fun game with all the dynamic action of MvC2 but easier to pick up controls. The graphics are not as nice as the 2D sprites to me, but all the characters are still faithfully rendered in multiple fanserving costumes.
If you didn't spend money on the first version, then it's worth getting. If you did pick up the first one then fuck Capcom, FIGHT THE POWER!

Your friends are a bit naive, Chaplow, or have been living under a rock. There's a reason why it's called Capcom Sequel Stagnation.

I'm personally of the school of thought that Capcom was more than willing to let MvC3 stand on its laurels, but were completely taken by surprise with Mortal Kombat's sudden rise form the ashes. I don't think anybody expected MK to come out firing on all cylinders the way it did and once MK blew MvC3 out of the water, Capcom had to go back to the drawing board and come out with something a little more substantial.

Of course, that's my own little hackneyed theory and your theories may vary.

Any word if the new release will deal with the imbalance issues of Phoenix?

Ask and ye shall receive:

    Phoenix
    - Only one action per jump. No more multiple fireballs, no more fireball into teleport.
*You can do 2 actions per flight mode as it is now longer. You can do Air H Shot into Teleport if you went flight mode first but there is longer start up on H Shots.
    - Air H Shot has longer start up and slower recovery. Air M Shot is pretty much the same. Air L Shot has faster recovery.
    - Even more reduction in health (like 400K to 350K)

Just out of curiosity, if you buy the game used from them, do they send you the original package? Yeah, a little neurotic, but I really like having the box with games and DVDs...
