After so many terrible youtube blogs: (sherdog.com)

Former pro boxer James Toney has signed a multi-fight contract to compete in the UFC. The promotion’s president, Dana White, confirmed the signing on Wednesday with MMAFighting.com after the news was first reported by FiveOuncesofPain.com.

Going to be interesting to see if they try to give him easy opponents or throw him in with the sharks a la Lesnar. Toney's training with Juanito Ibarra, the trainer best remembered for taking Rampage's boxing to a higher level and slightly less remembered for getting fired after stealing his money. This is arguably not the best choice for preparing to fight people who can kick him and tap him, but then, it's James Toney.

It will be equally interesting to see if fighters decide to stand and trade punches with him out of ego--Sylvia/Mercer may have been a good indicator of the possible future.

I'm still a sucker for the old Boxer v Mixed Martial Artist sort of fights so this is all good with me. If they throw him to the wolves he'll get dismantled, but if he's on a multi-fight deal they'll probably ease him in for a fight or two. He might even be able to pull out one big win along the way if someone decides to prove what a manly man they are by standing with him.

In vaguely related MMA news, Arlovski signed on with Strikeforce. I'm one of the three people in the world who still think he's got something left, so I'm pretty happy with that too.

Making me happiest of all though was the news (espn.go.com) that the April 17 Strikeforce card will feature Shields v Henderson, Mousasi v King Mo and Gilbert Melendez v Shinya Aoki.

That last one in particular has me squealing unreservedly like an excited schoolgirl, but Shields v Henderson should be fun too, and kudos to King Mo for going up against Mousasi already.

Oh, man, it's just too good.

The rumor coming out of Dave and Iole has it that the UFC will run a televised Fight Night on April 17--as in, directly counterprogramming Strikeforce--with a headline bout in Matt Serra vs. Mike Swick, and a main event of James Toney vs. Kimbo Slice.

It's like the hilarious old PrideFC freakshow fights all over again.

But isn't Kimbo fighting Fake Concussion Man?

I wish they'd throw Toney against Hardonk to show him what happens to a standard boxing stance in MMA.

This would be fantastic on so many levels. Not least because by rights UFC should be providing the quality while Strikeforce bring forth the freaky, but for one night only it would go all bizarro world on us.

I still love me a freak fight, but if it's Kimbo v Anyone or Melendez v Aoki I know what I'd be watching. This is not to say Strikeforce would not get killed to death in the ratings though.

As planned, yeah, but they'd pull Slice from him for this.

Meltzer is saying that UFC basically only signed Toney so that Strikeforce wouldn't (fearing that Walker/Toney would get the ratings Strikeforce needs to survive). UFC has zero long term goals with Toney, as he doesn't even have an exclusive contract; he's able to still box.

Roy Nelson brought it back.

Same look, entirely different character sheet.

True. For Roy Nelson, being fat is a legitimate bonus. +2 to "having the moon on you".

High marks in Dex & Con, the Jiu Jitsu and Boxing feats... I'm just saying.*

Have you seen his non-UFC fights? Doughboy can GO-- like the rabbit with the drum.

Oh, for sure. I saw him against Arlovski, and I know he's Forrest Griffin's BJJ trainer. Point still remains that not only is he fat, but he's actually turned that into a plus not a minus.

"Fake Concussion Man" it is (sherdog.com).

Mitrione had a decent win over Marcus Jones but other than that he really hasn't looked like he's got much so it should be winable for Kimbo. This way I guess they can always go to Slice v Toney down the line if they want.

Besides, they could pretty much throw anything out there at 113 and it would still sell on the back of the Shogun/Machida rematch alone.

Also it's a good chance for teams like Burton and AOL,who have looked good since coming together, to get the kinks worked out for next year. Then there is rookie Kasey Kahne who is still looking for his first victory.
