My instant impression:

My second impression

Either it works and UFC has a new huge star and a rocket boosted to the promotion, or no one turns in and we know UFC is not going to work on network TV (at least for a long time.) There's no in-between; either they earn themselves a big new audience to make money off of, or they've wasted a 750K/1000K PPV buy rate to get a mediocre rating.

This is very bold move. Velasquez isn't crazy popular among the general audience, but most know that he's the guy who finished Lesnar with ease (and I'm sure those clips will be played ad nauseum in the media blitz soon to come). JDS has had a great run up to this fight and this is probably the biggest main event the UFC could promote without using their golden boys (Lesnar, Silva, GSP).

I really hope this goes well, as most bars in my area don't bother getting UFC PPVs, but many would no doubt tune some screens to Fox for my viewing pleasure.

It's also worth noting that the UFC isn't just marketing those two fighters, it's marketing the Heavyweight Championship itself. The HW champ in boxing was historically known as the toughest guy on the planet, but with boxing on the wane in recent years, the UFC probably hopes to fill that mythical "he's the man" vibe with their heavyweight champ.

The follow-up rumour is that UFC 139 (which originally had the Cain/JDS main event) will now have Anderson Silva vs. Dan Henderson as the replacement headliner. My question is, why not just have Anderson/Hendo on FOX?

Probably for the exact reason you just gave: the HW championship on network TV will draw attention from people who don't usually pay attention to MMA.

Anderson/Hendo II is a great fight, but they are in a division 80 pounds lighter and many in the potential audience pool just won't care enough to watch it.

Two questions: where will the fight take place, and how decent are the judges there?

They put a Mexican fighter in their Main Event. Latinos are the greatest growth population wise in the USA. Maybe it's a "build loyal fans slowly" plan.

All you'd need is Hendo back and I'd thoroughly expect Rich or Nate to dominate as the only two strikers in the top 10 of the newly renamed Wrestlemania division.
