All WEC talent will be retained, White said, including the 135- and 145-pound champions. WEC featherweight titleholder Jose Aldo will be recognized as the new UFC champion, and the same will go for the winner of Dominick Cruz's title defense against Scott Jorgensen at the promotion's final event, WEC 53, in December. White also confirmed that Aldo will defend his new UFC title on Jan. 1 at UFC 125 "Resolution," though his opponent was still not set in stone. ...
White said he intends to fold all the WEC lightweights into the UFC talent pool, unifying the two [155-lb] belts with a miniature tournament of sorts.
The Octagon won't change to accommodate the smaller guys, and Versus will get a few UFC events.
I'm for it. I like what little WEC fights I've seen, but I always forget Versus exists.

Yahoo's take on things. WEC was always a fun night of fights, but the presentation was a bit minor league. The WEC boys will shine for a while, until the inevitable merger of talent shows why they weren't in the UFC to begin with (with the exception of the lighter guys).

UFC is the largest MMA organization in the world and it was kind of crazy that they operated this weird little side brand that had the lighter weight classes. Crazier even is that they had duplicate weight classes there too. I assume it all made sense from some business perspective that I don't understand, but as far as I'm concerned, all will be right in the MMA world when UFC has champions in every standard MMA weight class.
The coolest thing about this news isn't which great WEC LW guys will make it in the big leagues, but which smaller UFC LW guys will finally have the chance to be in the UFC and fight at their natural 145 weight class. Also, if Jose Aldo puts on a few more pounds, we could see him in the LW division which would just be dream match after dream match.

I'd say the time for the merge was about 2 years ago, but this works too.Originally posted by samoflange UFC is the largest MMA organization in the world and it was kind of crazy that they operated this weird little side brand that had the lighter weight classes.
They did it to ensure that Versus wouldn't be broadcasting the IFL. Hell, put those two thoughts together: we could have Aldo the lightweight champ, and Frankie Edgar the featherweight champ!

I'm brand new to the MMA world, so I don't know a lot of the names and faces, or the promotions even. But I watched one fight from a show on Versus last night and saw Jose Aldo beat some other guy early in the second round, and he was exciting to watch. The first round (like 5/7 of the fight, really) was pretty boring, but Aldo personally seemed really exciting to watch.

Good for the fighters financially; a 10K bonus (and I'd say the odds of the lighter weights getting the fight of the night bonus is damn high) is nothing compared to the cost of training, medical, and travel, not to mention the higher show/win pay too.
Bad for Todd Harris and Joe Martinez (who just got his gig back) but it's rumored that at least the tv production guys will be kept on and utilized to launch the UFC channel.
Fantastic for us, who may never have to hear Stephan Bonnar on commentary again.
Even better for Jose Aldo who went to sleep on Wednesday and woke up on Thursday as UFC champion.
