Hurrah. Fox is going to air the last four episodes of Arrested Development in one glorious two hour block they're billing as the 'season finale.' Of course, they're airing it as a giveup against the opening ceremonies of the Olympics on February 10, but big deal. I don't think anybody cares any more about the ratings getting sandbagged by Fox, so their kissoff just means one amazing night of Arrested instead of not seeing the episodes, waiting until the spring to see them, or seeing them spread out intermittently. An Arrested marathon leading into the season/Fox finale? Bring it on and then Fox can fuck off forever as we ride into the sunset of ABC or Showtime.
Is anyone as outraged as I am that "Skating with Celebrities" has gotten nearly ten times the promotion in two weeks then Arrested got in their two year run?
It's really the perfect comic capper to the show's run on Fox, but what outrages me is when people say "Fox gave the show a chance, promoted it, and it just wasn't successful! They had to get rid of it!" That is extraordinarily ignorant. The only positive thing that Fox did for the show was renewing it twice (or 1.5 times). Beyond that, they did not promote the show and they had no idea how to market it to begin with.
What they did this year all but amounted to saboutage. They moved it to Mondays at 8 with no lead-in and then being surprised when it didn't carry their prime time. They aired the show for a whopping three consecutive weeks before it disappeared for a month, then aired it ONCE before it disappeared for another month.
But there might be a happy ending ...
Can we start the pool on how long it will take for Fox to bring it back after the DVD sales come in?
... in that both ABC and Showtime want the show. So Fox can air Skating With Celebrities and Stacked and fuck off forever while the show lives on, free at last, free at last.
If the show's cancelled and not picked up right away, it won't be coming back. The actors/writers will all move on to other projects (I hope) by then.
I know everyone keeps bringing up Family Guy as the Jackie Robinson of Fox shows being cancelled and never coming back, but honestly that show really requires one man to be brought back. All other parts/animation can be filled by anyone who comes in and none of us would ever notice.
Can you imagine what it would be like if Arrested Developement re-cast it's actors with look-a-likes. It might make for an AWESOME one episode (especially if Dave Attell played Tobias) but it wouldn't be the same show.
I'm just glad that they're getting a final send-off (hopefully not a FINAL final send-off) with all four episodes in a row. I wasn't about to watch anything to do with the Olympics anyways, so I couldn't care less what it's up against. I was worried the final shows would just be thrown on last minute, not in order, and probably with one or two missing.
Originally posted by the articleAlthough the network touts airing the two-hour block of the final four episodes of "Arrested's" current order on February 10 as "season finale," Liguori stressed that a future return of the show to Fox is "highly unlikely."
The article also discusses the departures of 'Malcolm in the Middle' and 'That 70's Show' and how Fox is very quickly running out of established comedies. (Enough such that it mentions a possible 'King of the Hill' revival.)
Edit: Zap2it gives the 'highly unlikely' quote its own article, further highlighting the regret the network feels about the lack of an audience for the show.
