THIS WEEK IN TV
* Games 5 of the World Series is Monday on FOX. Game 6 and 7 if necessary are Wednesday and Thursday. If it goes 7 that will preempt House, Lie To Me, So You Think You Can Dance, Glee, Fringe, and Bones. If Game 6 is not needed, FOX will air reruns of the last two episodes of Glee on Wednesday, and if Game 7 is not needed, new episodes of Bones and Fringe will air.
* As noted above, Bones and Fringe air on Friday if there's no baseball game. You may wonder what happened to the shows that had been airing on Friday. Brothers moves to Sunday, 'Til Death has a new episode on Christmas, and then moves to Sunday in January. Dollhouse is going to stay on Friday, but it won't be back until December 4th, when they will begin airing two consecutive episodes each week.
* CBS will not give up on MMA. Since EliteXtreme went out of business, their new venture is Strikeforce & M-1 Global Saturday Night Fights. The following matches are announced for this Saturday (rankings according to FightMatrix.com):
Heavyweight: Fabricio "Vai Cavalo" Werdum (12-4-1, #12 Heavyweight) vs. Antonio "Junior" Silva (13-1, #24 Heavyweight)
Light Heavyweight: Gegard "The Dreamcatcher" Mousasi (26-2-1, #4 Light Heavyweight) vs. "The African Assassin" Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou (7-4, #22 Heavyweight)
Middleweight Championship: Jake Shields (23-4-1, #6 Middleweight) vs. Jason "Mayhem" Miller (22-6-1, #43 Middleweight)
Heavyweight: Fedor "The Last Emperor" Emelianenko (30-1, #1 Heavyweight) vs. Brett "The Grim" Rogers (10-0, #7 Heavyweight)
Shields and Silva are former Elite XC Champions.
* The end of the Dickies 500 from Texas Motor Speedway spills into primetime on ABC.
* FOX's primetime Sunday lineup this week is Brothers, American Dad, Family Guy, Family Guy Presents Seth and Alex's Almost Live Comedy Show, another Family Guy, and The Cleveland Show. The Seth and Alex thing in the middle has the following description:
"Seth MacFarlane invades ANIMATION DOMINATION with a commercial-free variety special starring MacFarlane and his FAMILY GUY co-star Alex Borstein. The half-hour special will highlight the duo's subversive and unique comedic sensibilities and feature original animation, live-action performances of FAMILY GUY's most memorable musical numbers, comedy sketches and surprise celebrity guests. Don't miss FAMILY GUY PRESENTS: SETH & ALEX'S ALMOST LIVE COMEDY SHOW (working title) airing Sunday, Nov. 8 (8:30-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (SP-1018) (TV-14 D, L, S, V)" Sounds like it could possibly be a back-door pilot for a future series.

IN OTHER NEWS
A few shows have been canceled. Apparently I missed the news on Southland, which was canceled a couple weeks ago. It had its last new episode on May 21st, and then had been airing reruns on Friday. The 6-episode second season was supposed to begin October 23rd, but on October 8th they decided instead to cancel it. And just today, TNT announced that they have picked up the rights, and it will start airing on Tuesday, January 12.
Trauma, currently Mondays on NBC, and Brothers which will move to Sunday on FOX, will not be renewed. They will, however, finish out the rest of their episodes.

BROADCAST TV RATINGS - 10/26 TO 11/1. Why only broadcast? Well for one, I don't know of a site that lists cable ratings on a daily basis. But secondly, broadcast television has the majority of the highest rated programs. According to the Television Bureau of Advertising, for the week of October 19 - 25, 92 of the 100 most-watched ad-supported programs (by adults 18-49) were on a broadcast network, and the two highest cable ratings went to sports, ESPN Monday Night Football and Game 4 of the National League Championship Series on TBS. (In case you were wondering, Sons Of Anarchy on FX was the highest rated non-sports cable show of that week, with a 2.0 rating. WWE Raw on USA was second with a 1.7, and the other shows in the top 100 were Monk (USA), White Collar (USA), Nip Tuck (FX), and Ghost Hunters (SyFy).)

At this point, Smallville wanting another season is probably out the door, should have been out the door with its pathetic seventh season. Heroes is in the middle of the road, but for NBC that means its near the top and has been steadily getting back up to where it was for the premiere. Leno already talked to the affliate they said it was ok, he was killing them and that it wouldn't mind going back to 11:35 p.m. The worst part for NBC is that they are stuck with these terrible ratings, but they are making money off it.

I find it totally hilarious that NBCs highest rated show is called THE BIGGEST LOSER.

How far they've fallen in just a few years. I'm guessing JOEY was the start of the downfall? Or COUPLING?

SMALLVILLE is a rather inexpensive show and it certainly has it's fanbase. The DVD sales are ridiculously high, so I'm guessing it's safe.

Leno (and NBC) could certainly be doing worse. Check out his interview with Broadcasting & Cable (broadcastingcable.com) - I like his attitude here.

Y'know, his show's not BAD...I just tend to want to watch other stuff that hour. I do find myself staying on NBC on Thursdays just from inertia and I usually stick around for the entire hour. I have a feeling if I actively sought it out, I would enjoy it, but right now I'm never telling myself "ah, it's 9, time to catch Leno." He's not going to be able to compete with RAW, ECW or Numbers, and Wednesday I usually opt out of TV right after Kim starts watching "America's Next Top Model."

I'm not sure if you are trolling or if you are in some time zone that gets things an hour early, but the show is on at 10pm? Is this 10 Eastern/Pacific only?

Central Time Zone gets everything an hour earlier, hence ads that say "10 pm (9 Central)'.

Saskatchewan is especially awesome, as we don't have daylight savings time, so during the summer we can watch American networks on cable with a 6-to-9 prime time.

It is the policy of the documentary crew to remain true observers and not interfere with its subjects.

Yes, most everything's an hour earlier in the Central time zone because we take an Eastern feed. I think Oregon is causing you to forget things you used to know.

I just forget which time zones are like that.

I guess I've never visited Central Time Zone outside of your wedding. Everywhere else I've been has been Mountain, Eastern, or Pacific.

Or Phoenix.

I think I'm just getting feeble minded in my old age.

I don't know much about television outside the Central time zone either. Wikipedia tells me that prime time is 7 to 10 in Central and Mountain, and 8 to 11 in Pacific and Eastern.

So if I understand that right, Eastern and Central are watching the show at the same time, because Eastern is -5 UTC and Central is -6 UTC, so both are airing at 1 AM UTC.

Then Mountain airs an hour later, at 7 PM, or 2 AM UTC.

And finally Pacific gets its shows 2 hours after Mountain, as 8 PM Pacific is 4 AM UTC.

That's why CRZ used to shut down the board during Raw, because people insisted on live blogging it, and the west coast hadn't seen it yet. Wait ... Raw is supposed to be live. Is it actually tape-delayed on Mountain and Pacific? Seems like common sense, but I've never bothered to think about it before now.

Not just RAW, but a lot of "live" shows are aired on a tape delay on Mountain and Pacific I believe.

I'm not sure how it works, but I remember catching American Idol on a time-shift channel from Vancouver and hearing Seacrest say "phone lines will be open for 2 hours after the show". That got me wondering about how they work that since the show had already finished airing two (I think) hours ago in my (Central) time zone.

The Television Bureau of Advertising has released their information on cable shows for this week. They list ratings for households, Adults 18-49, and Adults 25-54. A blank means that show wasn't in the top 10 for that category.

I have to wonder if it's an average or specific episode of SVU and NCIS that are used for those ratings since each air about 20 times during the week.

There is a section on it that says "# TLCST". Here are the shows that have Number of Telecasts > 1.
WWE Raw (it acually calls this "WWE Entertainment". I assume the two hours are each considered their own program like it was in the Raw Is War / War Zone days): 2.
Law & Order: SVU: 3.
Ghost Hunters: 2.
NCIS: 8.
The O'Reilly Factor: 5.
Spongebob: 2.
So that doesn't really explain NCIS or Spongebob or SVU, which are both on like 4 hours a day.

I can't remember which is which but CI and SVU have marathons on Monday and Tuesday so that number of telecasts for SVU should be 12 alone before you even reach mid-week.

This, of course, is one of the huge pains in the ass that Tivo takes care of for us, when y'all spring forward & fall back. The local channels all "tape-delay" primetime, but the *cable* channels (generally) don't. So Raw, ECW & Superstars change times -- they're an hour later than they were last month. But Smackdown stays in it's 7:00 slot, at the beginning of Arizona primetime. However, dish providers provide either east coast feed, west coast feed, or both.

And, just to add to the fun, as they started including HD versions of cable channels on Cox cable, some of them were the pacific feed & some the east coast feed. So I can watch Raw in HD at 7PM, or on basic cable at 10PM.

We currently have TOONHD on channel 750 from the east coast feed & TOONP on channel 50 on basic cable from the west coast feed. So, since CN's repeat loop is 4 hours long, I can watch a first run Venture Brothers on Sunday night at 10PM, 1AM, 2AM or 5AM. Whereas, last week those were 9PM, 12mid, 1AM or 4AM.

I looooooove TiVo!!

Well, I have insider, so I might not have noticed, even if I did download them. The last show I listened to regularly on ESPN radio was the V Show, but there were too many fill-in hosts. They also cut an hour off the show at some point in the last year....
